Lawmaker Wants Teachers Armed With Guns ( FReep a Poll )
The Associated Press ^ | October 5, 2006 | Rep. Lasee

Posted on 10/05/2006 8:10:28 AM PDT by george76

In the wake of school shootings in Wisconsin, Colorado and Pennsylvania during the last two weeks, a Wisconsin state legislator said he plans to introduce legislation that would allow teachers, principals, administrators and other school personnel to carry concealed weapons.

Rep. Frank Lasee, R-Bellevue, said Wednesday that, while his idea may not be politically correct, it has worked effectively in other countries.

"To make our schools safe for our students to learn, all options should be on the table," he said.

"Israel and Thailand have well-trained teachers carrying weapons and keeping their children safe from harm. It can work in Wisconsin."

Lasee stressed that the measure would hinge on school staff members getting strict training on the use of the weapons.

It could help, but at the school I am at right now we HAVE a great video surveillance system. The problem is....they won't pay someone to watch it all day. You can see the problem after the fact.

With all the fear and conflict, it was not the best learning environment.

See that is still largely up to the student. As I may have mentioned I teach in a fairly violent inner city school. Most of the violence that is not gang related comes from the severely handicapped kids (the Autistics) or the normal (ain't no such critter) 9th grader. Still, we graduate folks with the distinction of the Silver Knight Award, we send folks to the finest Ivy League schools with full scholarships and we even have kids do well on the A.P. exams.

And the first time a teacher shoots back; can you imagine the legal wrangling on that one?

How many of the students are old enough to legally own a firearm?

Only cops are "old enough" to legally carry one onto a school campus.

I read it...I'm confused: I didn't think anyone but a cop could carry weapons on a public school campus...?

I think this is well worth investigating.

I agree, however, I think it could end up backfiring if they don't find an absolute foolproof way to handle the idea. Alot of these shootings are middle school or high school age kids with a grudge. If these guns are in any way accessible to a student there becomes a problem that may wind up happening more frequently than we are seeing now.

True, to the best of my knowledge. The poster I was replying to commented that if teachers and administrators were allowed to carry, then students would sue for the right claiming they needed equal protection.

No, I didn't realize I was talking with a schoolteacher. :-)

Sure, it depends on the kid. Each student has a different experience. Some students will graduate with honors, while others get lost in the mayhem.

Even in the better schools, social factors come into play. Social factors can affect grades dramatically. Outside of school, social factors are not an impediment to learning. And, if education were sold on the private market, we would have a greater choice between schools. If one school isn't right for your child, you can try another.

While I'm all for the Free Market...you need to mention the natural addendum to this staement: IF one can afford the fees. Because my students are wearing clothes the moms have resewn and re-cut from fabric purchased in surplus stores. I couldn't figure out WHY the girls were wearing cammies or at least US G.I. camo patterns on some really nice looking dresses. A lot of kids join JROTC for the uniforms to wear! You can buy a surplus uniform for about $2.00 in some places. If mom or sister is an accomplished seamstress then nothing is impossible. Such is reality in the inner city. Especially in the little Haiti area of Miami-Dade County.

18-22 thousand? No doubt very low. I agree wholeheartedly that the citizenry needs to increase the salary levels of teachers. Where is the money going to out there?

Excellent teachers need to get excellent pay. Bad teachers need to be shown the door. And unions need to be kept out or thrown out.

That said, the idea of teachers being armed troubles me. Teachers have enough on their plates without having to take on a kid with a weapon. I still say that trained and armed guards need to patrol the halls in troubled schools and in general administrators and teachers need to get to the front doors and welcome each and every kid into the school.

ALL others keep out!

Wow! What's in the water up there? First I read that the Wisconsin legislature is considering reinstating the death penalty and now I'm reading it's considering allowing teachers to carry hand guns in schools! Well, whatever "is" in the water, hope it spreads to other states too!!!!

Without public schools, some kids wouldn't get any education. Some of those kids would be turned away by every private institution.

I agree that all teachers have enough to worry about, but it is a bit of a pain to have to think about being attacked. Last year a school out here of 91 students (K-12) had a student get out of control and attack a sub. Amazingly the student had "connections" with the school board.(i.e. he was not expelled long ago) He was a problem long before he manifested it in a violent way.
My point being; it can happen anywhere. I have a ccw. Cannot I carry? If not, why not?

If teachers were required to have adequate training in handling guns and shooting when necessary and to carry a concealed handgun it would certainly shake the liberals out of the schools -- a good thing in my opinion.

Poll results
Yes 12499 54%
No 10641 46%

There are many affordable options on the open market right now. If all education were sold on the free market, there would be many more.

Btw, my eldest was thrown out of preschool because we couldn't afford a second car and couldn't get him to school everyday. (So much for looking out for the "poor"). I live in the suburbs, and, trust me, these people sending their kids to public school here aren't hurting for money.

But, once I was on my own, I began to realize what other options were available. It's amazing what one can find on the free market. Used items. Sales. Bargains. Free items from other homeschoolers no longer using them.

Want your child in a classroom environment? There are homeschool groups meeting and learning together on church property, and the cost is minimal.

Right now, parents look at their tax bills and figure, "Might as well send the kids to public school. After all, we're paying for it." That's why the parochial schools in my area are closing down, one by one. And that's why private schools are so pricey. (They only appeal to the very wealthy, as most other people would rather save money and send their kids to public school).

If all education were sold on the free market, there would be many more affordable options as demanded by people in the lower income brackets.
