Platte Canyon High School in Bailey was evacuated early Wednesday afternoon because of a hostage situation with a gunman, Park County emergency dispatchers said.
Dispatchers said there was at least one hostage.
The adjoining middle school was also evacuated.
Jan Howard, a secretary to the superintendent of Park County Schools, said the students were being taken to a safe location and only sheriff's deputies and fire officials were being allowed into the schools.
Authorities said U.S. Highway 285 was closed in Bailey because of the situation.
Jefferson County authorities said deputies, including the SWAT team and bomb squad, from their sheriff's office were on stand-by to assist if called by Park County authorities.

Still hope that perp will have an accident.
Looking for more possible explosive devices within the school.
Prayers for the injured student and her family, as well as the other uninjured student that they both fully recover from this frightening ordeal!
Thanks Liberty!
Reports are that the female student who was critically wounded did have vital signs when she was taken in the helicopter.
Prayers from me too. (Love your tag line!)
Ditto that!
There are several good reasons.
First, the school needs to be able to account for the students.
Second, they need to release the students to the parents/guardians and not release them to the wrong people. That would make a bad situation worse.
Third, most of these students live miles from the high school. They cannot just walk home. And you sure don't want students walking around, and parents looking for them at the schools. That would be mass confusion.
Fourth, highway 285 is the main route, and, IIRC, the only paved road and it is blocked off. The situation was wild enough without having hundreds of distraught parents driving around.
More than a dozen swat officers leaving the school now.
Gunman is dead.
Reported : Perp is dead.
