By Haaretz Service and news agencies

Syrian security forces surrounded the U.S. embassy in Damascus early on Tuesday and sealed off the area, witnesses said, adding that heavy gunfire and explosions had been heard in the area.

"It appears that the embassy is coming under attack," one resident in the area told Reuters.

They'd better be fighting the terrorists. Assad is a twerp and scumbag, but I don't think he's sufficiently insane to attack an embassy during a Republican administration. There's nothing to be gained and everything to lose.

It's unfinished business, and it needs to be finished.

Fortunately, President Bush seems to be proceeding along that list of unfinished business and completing missions that should have been finished years ago.

Along those lines, the North Koreans still have one of our ships, and I want it back - that or destroyed to remove it from their hands.

Yep, that's about what my husband just said. Smiling. Are you listening?

I'm your husband's twin. (Or, is it vice versa?) ;-)

From the BBC:

Blasts heard at US Syria embassy

Explosions and heavy gunfire are being reported near the US embassy in the Syrian capital, Damascus.

Security forces have sealed off the Rawda area, which houses other embassies, security installations and senior officials' residences.

There has been no official confirmation of developments in Damascus, which has seen several blasts in recent years.

Syria is an authoritarian state where the security forces exert tight control on the population and the media.

A security source told the BBC it is believed Syrian forces may have foiled a bomb attack on the US embassy

While Syria makes trouble for us in Iraq, it also has its own troubles with Islamic fundamentalists. If I had to guess, and it's ONLY a guess at this point, it would be that jihadis are attacking the US Embassy, Syrian government installations, or both.

One point is that Assad is just as worried about Islamic Fundamentalists as we are in that respect, although he does support Hezbollah. Baathists are secular.

(This is an old february photo I am posting! Not current situation!)

Thousands of angry Syrian demonstrators storm the Danish Embassy in Damascus, Syria on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006 and set fire to the embassy building in protest of offensive caricatures of Islam's prophet. The building also houses the embassies of Chile and Sweden.

A security source told the BBC it is believed Syrian forces may have foiled a bomb attack on the US embassy.

Captain Obvious just told BBC that foiled bomb attacks generally do not result in explosions.

Maybe I should take 20 minutes out of my busy life and get a corrspondence school journalism degree.
