This is being reported live on tv so has not yet made it on the website. Tremors have been felt in Central Florida.
You know that is a good point. I am on a earthquake forum and I will bring that to their attention, if it has not already been mentioned.
Man. That little Mag 3 was close to the New Madrid Fault line.
Uhmmm..why not? I was wondering about aftershocks- but since I know nothing about earthquakes I decided to keep my mouth shut!
What would no aftershocks mean?
So you got it, too, huh? Weird - check out some of the other posts on this thread, from folks in Tampa, Pasco, etc., all places closer to the epicenter than we are, who didn't feel a thing. I wonder why that is?
I'll be the first to admit that I'm a complete ignoramus when it comes to earthquakes - never saw the need to worry about them too much before, not living in Florida. But I have heard of quakes in the mountains of South and North Carolina, and I do know that the New Madrid fault located near the Ozarks occasionally lets loose. But since Florida is basically just a spit of sand and limestone sticking out from the SE coast, I just assumed that the only real geological issue for us was sinkholes.
I guess not! Maybe it's time to start brushing up on seismology.
I remember the same apparent lack of afterschocks with the earlier (February, I think) Gulf quake. I suppose it could be a relative lack of sensitive instrumentation in proximity to the epicenter.
Huh, who knew?!
I was in church at that time and didn't feel a thing! Weird. GG
In Tampa, our cat that exhibits 'wild' characteristics began an abrupt, erratic run around the house about the time the earthquake is reported to have occurred.
I moved to Tampa from the New Madrid Fault area, so am familiar with quakes of varying strength. I felt nothing.
Florida itself is one of the most aseismic (non-seismic) places on the face of the earth.
This earthquake was a considerable distance offshore Florida.
good place to be during a earthquake....teaching a SS class!!*wink*
Mark Twain tells a story about an earthquake in San Francisco - not the big one, the 1865 one that USED to be called "the big one."
A minister was in the pulpit when the first shock hit, and he said, "Keep your seats! There's no better place to die than this!" Then the next shock hit, and he added, "But outside is good enough!" and skipped out the side door.
Hhhmmmm...interesting. Thanks for the info- I didn't realize that.
I DO know about hurricanes, however :)
LOL!
I always watch the birds. They seem to have an uncanny sense of things to come. My dog??? hell, she hid behind the couch when the newspaper boy came.
Good...Cause that's where my friends live.
Bradenton Florida reporting in,
We have major death and distruction! Where is my FEMA check!
I am kidding about the death and distruction!
Interesting article (in PDF format) by a Professor at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette in 2002.
This quake would seem to be on one of the old rift faults identified.
