Possible plane crash in Lexington, KY. My brother works security for Lexington UK Hospital and was just called in. No news locally or on major news outlets yet. I didn't want to post anything for fear of being wrong, but he's still waiting for an official call while on stand-by.

Update from WTVQ 36 Lexington:

A plane has crashed near the Blue Grass Airport this morning. No word on details at this time. We are told it was a commercial aircraft. Versailles Road is blocked as emergency vehicles circle around the site. We have live coverage beginning at 7:20am. Stay with Action News 36 for more details.

They shifted the "start" of main runway 22 down about 500 feet last weekend as part of the repaving project. This was to allow for an FAA mandated buffer area on runway 22 next to Versailles road. And they extended the runway on the other end by several hundred feet for the same reason. Today, they showed the new ground map the pilots have been given. It did NOT show the approach way to the main runway. So it would be easy to get confused if you had never flown out before. Also there was a rumor that the scheduled pilot got sick early this morning and did not report to work. So they had to get another pilot last minute. Again, just a rumor, so don't everyone get your tin-foil hats on.

"Obviously, this is pilot/air traffic control error."

FWIW: Air Traffic Control does not make errors. The pilot is the one responsible. He (pilot) may disobey Air Traffic Control if he thinks their orders will endanger his aircraft and/or passengers. There may be H*** to pay and he may lose his pilots license. But he is in control/responsible for the aircraft.

I must be missing something, what was feeding the fire? Did the fuel tanks feed it on the inside? Planes that crash are rarely fully intact, they are at least cracked. The fuel tanks are cracked too. Everything burns, inside, outside, everything.

Don't know just where the tanks are on this type of aircraft, bust most likely in the wings and under part of the fuselage. That's typical for a low wing monoplane transport aircraft.

Yep, that was true back when I was flying. Doubt that anything has changed over the years.

A large measure of airplane crashes during the past twenty years have been linked to Muslim extremists. Right?

No, most have been simple, or more often complex, accidents. The terrorist attacks are just more spectacular, especially the ones on 9-11 where the aircraft were flown into buildings on the ground, killing way more than the folks on the aircraft.

Why wouldn't the air traffic controller tell them they were going down the wrong runway??

Cause he didn't bother to look? Or couldn't for some reason.

Wouldn't it be a shame...if it was something as simple as the Air Traffic controller NOT seeing that he was on the wrong runway..and didn't tell him to stop??

God Bless them all....

You folk can read, can you not? A large measure of airplane crashes during the past twenty years have been linked to Muslim extremists. Right? A plane in Lexington went down and killed 49 people. Out of 500 hundred posts to this thread no one here even suggested a possible Muslim connection.

We can also reason. Let's think this through. We know that the crash was due to pilot error - the physical facts on the ground have already confirmed that. Given that, the following would need to be true:

1. The Muslim extremist pilot was named Jeff Clay.
2. Clay waited seven years for the most opportune moment to wreak terror - and that opportunity was...a 50 passenger regional jet in Lexington, KY.
3. Clay's flightpath would have taken him to a major US city and the busiest US airport. Yet instead of attempting to crash the plane in Atlanta, he instead went with an empty field in Kentucky.

Put in those terms, terrorism makes absolutely no sense in this case. The best explanation is generally the simplest.

Air Traffic Control does not make errors

I think what you are saying is not that ATC doesn't make errors, but rather that the pilot is still responsible for obeying incorrect instructions.

However in this case it seems that the ATC told them runway 22. His/her only error would be in not verifying they were indeed on 22.

I suggest you do some research on that! Perhaps a Google on "Air Traffic Control Errors."

I worked for a major airline, and more than a few times I saw some pretty irate pilots storm out of the airplane on their way to either zone or the tower because some air traffic controller made a near fatal mistake!

In the final analysis it's not their responsibility to ensure the pilot obeys instructions, although they (ATC) normally observe to see that they do. Could be reasons why he/she didn't or couldn't. From diagram of the airport, it looks like visibility should be good between the tower and the ends of 22 and 26. Unless the tower is so tall that they'd have to stand and lean over to look down far enough, but I wouldn't think so.

The pilot is in control of the aircraft. If he obeys incorrect orders from ATC and his aircraft is damaged or crashes. It is the pilots fault, not ATC.

There may be a clue on the voice "black box"...if anything was even discussed regarding which runway to take off from...otherwise it will be speculation..

However, if the crew member survives..then perhaps some day he can shed some light also...

Good info. No tin foil here. Though I can get in that mode some times. It is looking more and more like a Perfect Storm / FUBAR thing happened this morning. Those poor people.

Every time I have ever taken off, I do white knuckle a bit until that hunk of metal gets all the way up. I can imagine what it was like.

Ok, I guess when they said intact, they must have meant it wasn't just scattered all over the place. Thx.
