Possible plane crash in Lexington, KY. My brother works security for Lexington UK Hospital and was just called in. No news locally or on major news outlets yet. I didn't want to post anything for fear of being wrong, but he's still waiting for an official call while on stand-by.

Update from WTVQ 36 Lexington:

A plane has crashed near the Blue Grass Airport this morning. No word on details at this time. We are told it was a commercial aircraft. Versailles Road is blocked as emergency vehicles circle around the site. We have live coverage beginning at 7:20am. Stay with Action News 36 for more details.

Hardly. Are you afraid to admit that a tragic accident happened because of human error? What is the purpose of such cowardly paranoia, looking for a terrorist behind every incident. Such talk simply trivializes actual terror events. This was a plane crash, not a terrorist incident.

I just saw on our local news they have eye witnesses that say the plane exploded shortly after take off.

There are always eyewitnesses to these things that say the plane "exploded" when what happened was the plane hit the ground first and the fuel ignited.

This accident was pilot error, attempting a takeoff, mistakenly, on a runway that was not intended for jets this large.

Thank goodness for TiVo. I rewound and it's on channel 9 here in DC.

The witnesses name is Ricky Brown. Quote, "Over the hill side I saw a flash of light and the explosion. And then just a big plume of smoke come up", unquote. Another unnamed witness said she heard a large explosion.

Strange. Are we afraid to suggest the politically incorrect?

Some are never afraid to suggest wild conspiracy theories when occam's razor will suffice.

Fuel tank ignition when the plane hit the ground.

The plane was intact, the people were killed by fire not smoke inhalation. Must have been a fierce flash fire on the inside of the plane.

I must be missing something, what was feeding the fire? Did the fuel tanks feed it on the inside?

Eyewitness saw it explode after takeoff.

I'm confused, but that doesn't take much.

Got to go for a while.

Excellent for the record. This thing has a lot of smell test issues, imo.

I think you are right, sink. One thing that got me wondering was that it was reported that the passengers evidently burned to death - not smoke inhalation.

But, full load of fuel and a small perimeter when it crashed would make for a very hot fire. May the Lord have mercy on them all.

Taking off my foilhat here.

You folk can read, can you not?

A large measure of airplane crashes during the past twenty years have been linked to Muslim extremists. Right?

A plane in Lexington went down and killed 49 people.

Out of 500 hundred posts to this thread no one here even suggested a possible Muslim connection.

Most of the fuselage was intact, the wings and the fuel tanks seperated leaving gaping holes for flaming jet fuel to enter.. and well lets not think too much about the aftermath.

Those poor souls.

No. You could count the number of actual crashes linked to Muslim extremists on one hand.

Obviously, this is pilot/air traffic control error.

Living in Lexington, and watching non-stop coverage today, I am 99.8% sure it is NOT terrorist related. Pilot for some reason just took off on the short runway. In the end, it will probably be a combination of various human error factors. The pilot, ATC, and new design of the runway approaches. I have not been on a flight out of there, since the work last weekend. But they did a lot more than just repaving. They moved the main runway about 500 feet further down. This put the beginning of runway 22 right next to the beginning of runway 26. Only a short approach way between them. In the past, you had to go about 300-400 futher down past 26 before turning left on the main 22 runway. Looks like a poor redesign also.

Two of our good friends were on the plane. They were headed to California for a vacation. We were at their house this morning with their only daughter when the airlines called to confirm her parents were dead. Tought day. Also another guy who started work with me on the same day in our first jobs right out of college was on the plane. I had knew him for over 20 years. And another 5-6 folks I knew who they were. And they still have only released about 30 of the 50 names.

I am so sorry for your losses. What a kick in the gut.

I have friends (co-worker in Versailles). Her husband flies a lot.

He did not even know about it before I called him this morning.

Can you tell more about moving the main runway? Is it a brand new strip, or an extension of the old one?

again, it could have been an error from air traffic control

My sincere sympathy to both of your and all the families involved. I am so sorry for your loss.

KY is the most beautiful place, I have passed Airport, and the very spot shown on the news, near the bluegrass MANY times, it is so hard to imagine this happening in a place of such beauty. A sad day for everyone, but especially the two of you and the rest of the friends and family of those on the plane.

May they rest in peace.
