Poll: Bias Against Mormon, Muslim in White House

The Record, Bergen County, NJ

August 17- Most traditional barriers to religion in presidential elections have toppled, a new Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll has found. In particular, the survey showed that anti-Semitism and anti- Catholicism are fading as voter taboos.

But uneasiness about some religions persists. Thirty-seven percent of those questioned said they would not vote for a Mormon presidential candidate and 54 percent said no to the prospect of a Muslim in the White House.

In addition, 21 percent said they could not vote for an evangelical Christian. Only 15 percent replied that they would not vote for a Jewish presidential candidate. Just 10 percent of those polled were unwilling to cast ballots for a Catholic chief executive.

"This clearly shows that the old Protestant/Catholic/Jewish distinction has largely eroded in American politics," said David Campbell, a professor of political science at the University of Notre Dame.

The nationwide survey of 1,321 adults was conducted June 24-27. The poll has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points, poll director Susan Pinkus said.

With no likely Muslim candidate on the presidential horizon, the poll numbers present the greatest threat to a potential contender from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (as the Mormon Church is formally known). Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is a Mormon who is exploring a run for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination.

"It is something he will have to address," said Merle Black, a professor of politics at Emory University. "It will be a challenge. It doesn't necessarily kill him as a candidate, but he may have to talk in more detail than he ever has before about his faith

I'd love to see those results split out between Republican and Democrat responses :D

I'd vote for either one if they kept their religion under wraps and were strong on the War on Terror and actually secured our borders and had fiscal responsibility. If such a man came along, I'd vote for him if he were named Brigham Mohammed.

NO MUZZIES IN THE WHITE HOUSE, not never, no-how. I would riot in the streets. With a rifle.

I'll bet a pork sandwich that the 46% lied to be politically correct.

So not wanting a muslim in the White House is bias. I don't want a child molester or a murderer in the White House. Is that bias also? In a liberal's mind it is only bias when anything, and I mean anything, that reflects negativity to muslims or gays is bias. We aren't allowed to have an opinion without being called biased.

Yeah this one is false. Democrats won't admit they are Jew haters but the evidence is in the Lamont/Liebrman race. I believe Lieberman lost, in part, because he was a Jew. Libs associated him with Israel invading Lebanon, which they couldn't stand.

How about an atheist Presidential candidate? Where are the poll results for that?

Have we ever had an atheist President? How about "closet" atheists, like Clinton?

There was no report on that.

My guess is that any candidate who stands and declares that there is no God will not get elected.

There is a great deal of insider information about the Mormon religion, in that, most people do not have any familiarity with it. That being the case, Romney's choice of religion does bring up many questions.

At least Mormons aren't trying to blow themselves up on airplanes at 37,000 feet with 400+passengers or smashing suicide bombs into buildings.

That's my point.

They already do. His name is Barak Obama.

Brigham Mohammed

Mohammed says that a single ruler and sharia law is the only acceptable form of government. Therefore, democracy is ungodly and must be removed from the face of the earth.

Mohammed will never get my vote.

Way too low.

The percentage should be:

I will walk through live machine gun fire to rip the throat out of a Muslim in the White House: 100%

My concern is an athiest (Democrat) in the White House. I have a definite bias with that.
