Iran is pressing Shiite militias here to step up attacks against the American-led forces because of the Israeli assault on Lebanon, the U.S. ambassador to Iraq said Friday.
Iran could foment even more violence as it faces off with the United States and United Nations over its nuclear program in the coming weeks, he added.
The Iranian incitement has led to a surge in bold mortar and rocket attacks on the fortified Green Zone, said the ambassador, Zalmay Khalilzad.
The Green Zone, a four-square-mile, or about 10-square-kilometer, area on the west bank of the Tigris River, encloses baroque palaces built by Saddam Hussein that now house the seat of the Iraqi government and the U.S. Embassy, and that are protected by layers of concrete blast walls and concertina wire.
The Shiite guerrillas are members of splinter groups of the Mahdi Army, the powerful militia created by radical Shiite cleric Moktada al-Sadr, Khalilzad said. The Mahdi Army rose up twice against the Americans in 2004.
The groups behind the recent attacks have ties to both Iran and Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed Shiite militia in Lebanon that has been battling Israel for a month, the ambassador added. *snip*
The mercurial Sadr has come closest of all the Shiite leaders in hinting that Iraqis might take up arms in support of Hezbollah. He said in late July that Iraqis would not "sit by with folded hands" while Lebanon burned, and on Aug. 4 he summoned up to 100,000 followers to an anti-Israel and anti-American rally in Baghdad. Most of those who showed up were angry young men, many swathed in white cloths symbolizing funeral shrouds and some toting Kalashnikovs.

Quite a list of attacks conducted in Iraq.
Nobody has implicated Turkey in the Iran-Hezbollah arms-trafficking. It's been Syria that is the waypoint.
So they fly over Iraq or Turkey?
Syria does not have common border with Iran. So it must be either Turkey or Iraq.
Why do "we need to"? Because of "several articles"? My question is, since to get to Syria you need to travel through Iraq or Turkey, which way these transports go?
Apparently quite a bit. We did just hand their stooges, Hzb'allah what will later be portrayed as great victory of Shiite arms. In any event, the ceasefire once more saved a militant Islamic group from decimation or destruction by Israeli arms.
Before the current Israel/Hezbo hostilities, they could easily move by sea. There was no blockage of Lebanese or Syrian ports. Might not be any blockage of Syrian ports even now. A blockage is an act of war you know, and Israel has taken great pains to assure Syria that they don't want to go to war with them. So even now the stuff could go through Syria, possibly by a roundabout route, or through some neutral third country. After all, you can't konw what's in a container unless you open it up.
Both Iran and Syria have seaports. Gotta learn to think a little outside the box.
Gosh, do I detect a hint of a swastika in those images?
Yes, we pretty much thought it would be a nice, target-rich environment.
None of the bad guys showed up, though. They chickened out when they found out a buch of extra U.S. troops were pouring into Baghdad. They stayed behind, cowering in their hovels and mosques in Najaf.
It turned out to be a peaceful demonstration.
Oh, and it wasn't anywhere near 100,000 people.
"Several articles have explained this. It's why we need to consider both Iran and Syria as complicit in this war against Israel."
Why do "we need to"? Because of "several articles"?"
We need to understand the truth and explain it to others.
Hezbollah is an Iranian-sponsored terrorist organization.
"Via syria. Flights from Iran to Syria"
"So they fly over Iraq or Turkey?"
If they dont fly via Jordan and Saudi Arabia, or come by boat, I suppose so. Again, news reports have explained how Iran is supplying Hezbollah with arms even today.
Jesus Christ Almighty, that looks like Satan.
Good Luck to that.
@jmc1969, Iran has been the strongest supporter of democracy in Iraq. It's this simplistic retarded idea from your unenlightened American that if the US forces "democracy" on Iraq, it's going to be Pro American and Allie against Arab terrorist called Iran. O_o
Americans don't remember that it was they who supported Saddam and installed him, and that's something the Iraqis and Iranian haven't forgotten.
Why Iran supports democracy in Iraq is that it will bring the majority Shi'a closer to the Shi'a minority in the North of Saudi Arabia the ones who are being oppressed by a pro American dictatorship. The Shi'a minority in Saudi Arabia are also sitting right onto of major Oil fields.
And of course it would bring Iran (who are also 90% Shi'a) and Iraq closer together. This couldn't of happened with US installed Saddam, the idiot that waged war against Iran with the support of the US. This war waged against Iran after they overthrow US installed The shah of Iran of course.
Any of this ringing a bell to anyone? >_>
Iran doesn't even know or understand what a real democracy is, much less been a supporter of anything like it.
It's like you just read the first 11 words of my post.
This REAL democracy you talk off. It's going to be Pro American? Anti Iranian/pro american 1, 4, 8, 12 years down the line? How are you explaining this?
First of all you talk of not understanding a REAL democracy, then you talk of Pro American as if they are one and the same?
Mohammed Mossadegh, was Irans first every democratically elected prime minister, he then moved to nationalization Irans Oil industry, not following same suit as the Pro Saudi Dictatorship, making US, UK Oil companies unhappy.
How much money they have invested in the US, 800 Billion, this is your idea of pro American democracy?
After just 2 years of democracy, coup is formed, Pro American, Shah of Iran, the monarchial dictator privatizes Oil back to US/UK Oil companies. murder, rape of civilians, mass protest and so on.
Natural Iranian people overthrow dictatorship, and replace it with what is now a democracy which isn't going to throw billions of dollars into New York banks.
Then US support dictator Saddam against the Iranian...
As to your question, Iran wants NOTHING that the US has to offer, and has everything the US wants. This means it is they who want to be left alone not the other way round.
Now back to my first response. Iran has been a strong supporter of democracy in Iraq based on the points I posted in post 34.
I live in a Democratically elected Republic and the most free nation in the world, so I understand the concept well enough.
The USA did give satellite technology regarding whereabouts of troops from Iran to Saddam back then because Iran at that time had taken USA hostages and rather than send in our military, we let Saddam use his. Smart move actually.
Biggest step toward freeing up Iran is to remove theocracy from the government and to not let terrorists be recognized if the people or some foul play gets them elected to power.
If there are terrorist getting into leadership in Iran as there has been in Palestine with Hamas, then that just shows 25 years of theocracy has made them a terrorist state.
