Major cellphone outage reported in New York
Reuters ^ | 8/10/06 | Reuters

New York police reported a major outage of cellular phone service in the borough of Queens on Thursday.

"It's just an FYI. It has nothing to do with anything else. It's not criminal," a police spokesman said.

Two of New York's major airports -- JFK and LaGuardia -- are in the borough of Queens. Airport security was intensified after British police said they had foiled a plot to blow up several aircraft flying between Britain and the United States.

I'm not from, nor am I in the least bit familiar with NYC. From a terrorist's perspective what in Queens is worth blowing up?

This is quite possibly on-purpose to help thwart some terrorist activity or another.

We were working outside yesterday. Our very sophisticated equipment went crazy. We took out the second machine. That went crazy too. Wouldn't pick up the signal.

Then one of the radios went nuts and blew its program.

I commented: "What the hell is going on"? Are we getting sabotaged by the satellites?

We'll check out the instruments Monday!!

I think that in light of everything else that's been going on recently (the airliner bomb plot, the attempted hijacking, etc.), maybe a little bit of paranoia is in order right now.

what in Queens is worth blowing up

Just a guess here. Airplanes, civilians in airport lines, civilians in baggage lines, civilians in security lines etc etc.

Planes landing and leaving JFK International Airport and LaGuardia Airport?

"It has nothing to do with anything else"... How does this police spokesman KNOW that???????

As others have pointed out, he might have info from the phone company that's not been made available to us.

However, statements like that do remind me of an FBI announcement I heard on WABC radio on 9/11/01, minutes after the second plane hit the World Trade Center:
"The FBI has determined that this is not a terrorist attack."

It smacks of something bad. My hubs works for the company that went in and augmented signals after 9/11 to look for people trapped in the rubble. Someone must've taken out a tower to do this...but why?

Careful out there!

Is it possible the Feds took the towers offline to avert an attack using cellphones at those airports? /tinfoil

Thanks. I didn't know the airports were there. (even though I used to connect to flights to Europe from there quite a bit.)

I think that's the "8". Id like to see the configuration of the airports. (Two Zeroes back to back) Think Ground Zero.

Not necessarily. YOu can and should shut down cell towers if you think terrorists are afoot. Cell phones can be used to keep in touch and to set off bombs.
