A major terrorist plot to blow up planes in mid-flight has been disrupted by police, Scotland Yard says.
It is thought the plan was to detonate explosive devices smuggled on board aircraft in hand luggage.
During the night, police arrested a number of people in London after a counter-terrorist operation they said had lasted several months.
Police believe the attacks would have been particularly targeted at flights from the UK to the US.
The Department for Transport said security at all UK airports has been increased.
Passengers on all flights will not be allowed to take any hand luggage on to any flights in the UK.
Only the barest essentials - including passports and wallets - will be allowed to be carried on board in transparent plastic bags.
Yep and I am watching.
Reportedly, AG Gonzales will also speak.
Thanks Ruth for the ping, I see we have raised to Orange alert level and Red for airlines. They planned to take liquid explosives in various forms, gels, liquid etc and detonators disguised as tech type equipment according to Cherthoff who is giving a news conference now. I wonder if it was just the Brits who discovered this and we were just lucky they did?
No liquid or gels in carry on baggage, except baby formula and medicine which will be checked.
These scum were planning to bring down these planes here!
TSA will do other security checks, seen and unseen.
Federal air marshalls will be sent to UK to have complete coverage of flights to this country. Bomb sniffing dogs will be added.
Chertoff: Numerous intel agencies working together seamlessly. Air travel is safe. Special thanks in the British government. They've been great about close information sharing and both countries are abound together with common feelings of culture and by being targeted for terrorism.
I think we should grant their final wish and blow them up over the Atlantic. Seriously, if these guys don't get the death penalty, no one should.
Never felt safer in all my flying than on El Al. And there was a terrorist on our plane . . . got sepearted from the group that blew up the Athens airport specifically in the area our tour group had been standing in 5 minutes earlier.
That was in 1973.
Interesting "how far we've come."
No. Just my laptop. I dont like fighting with those old ladies over overhead bin space. They are mean.
Chertoff: We'll do everything in our power under the leadership of President Bush to defend our nation and our world. We'll provide updates throughout the day.
Gonzales: Repeating that we have very serious investigation proceeding in the UK and we want to be careful that we don't say too much that jeopardizes that investigation. So we ask for patience in receiving information.
Not this sh-- again!
wrong clark, that is ramsey. Ya know I dont think many people are going to be friendly to Ramsey, and Co. when they protest in DC on the 12th.
You were correct and I was wrong.

Gonzales: Viscious and determined enemy. Deadly plot to detonate bombs which would kill hundreds of innocent people.
We will continue to provide adaditional info as it becomes available.
Extremists arrested overnight. Their focus was liquid explosives. We're looking at links to AQ. Constant contact with our people in the UK. Dismantle cells before attacks occur.
MI5 has aggressively pursued leads. No indicatino of any plotting within the US, we're taking immediate steps within the aviation sector.
The FBI and entire intel community will continue to pursue every lead.
"but can't assume that everyone in network has been neutralized."
Yep.
Just went back and read your post again. MY bad, I havent have my first cup of coffee yet.
I wouldn't take it until I heard something happened near us
that would warrant taking it.
LOL! no problem! I'm still a quart low!
Gonzales: Deadly enemy that awakes every morning of ways to kill innocents. Our enemies should know that we're just as intent to stop them. One person at a time.
