Marine who lost arm, leg in Iraq mugged outside Washington

It's another bit of bad luck for a Marine who lost an arm and a leg in Iraq.

Lance Corporal Mark Beyers was mugged and robbed outside a restaurant in Bethesda, Maryland, last month.

The Marine from western New York was dining out with his wife, Denise, while finishing up rehabilitation at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

As they left the restaurant, five men approached them and asked for a cigarette. Denise Beyers tells The Buffalo News they gave the men a cigarette -- but the men grabbed her purse, kicked her and knocked the couple to the ground.

The thieves made off with 500 dollars just wired to them by a relative.

Coop has been in touch with me. My donation is on it's way.

Sionnsar, can you ping the UT crew? This is one where if we all give a little it can make a big difference for a soldier who needs our help.

PH -- this has nothing to do with Crevo but I am reaching out to anyone I can think of with a ping list.

JW7 -- You of all people can see what is needed here. I pledge my support for this soldier and hereby stand down on our little discussion -- pretty meaningless when compared to what happened to this soldier. Can you ping some folk to help out?

Pukin: It's official: The F-14 is the most beautiful craft ever to take to the skies. Variable Geometry is lost on the unwashed. Please ping your considerable following.

My check is already in the mail. Maybe we can get some more -- the VFW is handling the donations so we know it is legit.

I can't help everyone who has sacrificed for us, but I can help this one.

Thanks

Thanks. Although the cause is quite worthy, I don't feel right using my ping list for this.

This morning on CNN Headline news (Robin and Company) they reported this story, AND mentioned the fundraiser...

It might be worth while to suggest to JR that he could have an "All Freepers" ping list for such issues. That would be appropriate, if it didn't get used very often. Just for special situations that come along a few times a year. This one seems to be such a case.

That is a great idea -- what say you Jim? Howzabout you John? Talk to the "old man"? ;)

Either way I am there for this guy.

It is time that we start putting Marines in these neighborhoods. I am sick an tired of these thugs running our streets.

Which neighborhoods? Bethesda is one of the highet per-capita income areas in the entire USA and it is one of the richest parts of the DC area, average house over a million dollars. We don't know exactly where the thugs came from, I'd guess PG County or something like that.

Unlike you, I stand by my statement. As soon as you started receiving heat about it, you attempted to adjust (excuse) your comment as to appear more reasoned. Pitiful.

ALL of my comments were reasoned, as they always are. Just offends the sensitive from time to time. Too bad.

I just want to say I am a democrat who likes to troll this webiste. I am also black (if that really matters). I found this article very interesting because I use to be Lcpl Beyers fireteam leader back when I was in his reserve unit. I left the buffalo unit in 2000 and transfered to albany. My unit was mobilized in 2003. We got pretty lucky and saw no real combat in Iraq. Beyers unit was mobiled in 2005 and his battalian lost a lot of people. It really sucked to hear what has happened to him since then. He is a cool guy and laid back kid. His wife was also part of the unit. If there is a way to help him out a little feel free to e-mail me.
