Threat Matrix: Daily Terror Threat - August 2006

Posted on 08/01/2006 9:51:52 PM PDT by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Syria Tells Troops to Be Ready for Battle
(Full Story)

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has placed his military on full alert, citing "regional challenges", and vowed to continue supporting the "Palestinian and Lebanese resistance more than ever".

In a speech to mark the Syrian Army national day, Mr Assad said the volatile situation across the Middle East required "vigilance, preparation and readiness" and ordered all units of the armed forces to be on alert.

The comments were interpreted by Israel as a morale booster to the Syrian armed forces and not a call to battle. Israeli intelligence chiefs have assessed that Syria is not in the mood for an open war and is instead content to resupply Hezbollah guerillas in Lebanon.

2 poss bombs - 2 locations

Possible bomb blocks off portion of Lancaster Drive (Oregon)

There is a report of a suspicious device at Roths on Lancaster Drive. Police are evacuating the store and a nearby Key Bank.

They also may evacuate a liquor store and check-cashing store, nearby.

They have shut down Lancaster Drive at the Center Street intersection.

The device was described as a cylinder with tape and caps on the end. The Oregon State Police bomb squad is enroute.

Traffic is huge mess in that area, with backups on every one of the side streets.

The device in the Roth's parking lot is described as a pipe, 2 inches in diameter, with wires.

A similar description has been given for a suspicious device in the parking garage of ****Salem Hospital**** at this hour.

Hi JP, I was reading her blog earlier about the guys buying all the dispoable cell phones.

This was interesting.......I guess we will never be able to carry on liquid items again. I would miss my eye drops and bottled water, so I won't be going anywhere by air again.

Andy Oppenheimer, editor of Jane's Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Defence Directory, said: "There are a lot of homemade mixtures you can concoct from some very common materials that are innocent in themselves.

"We are talking about common, everyday chemicals that are used in perfumes, cosmetics, drain cleaner, batteries, or could for example be stolen from school labs.

"These materials are easy to obtain and hard to detect, and could be smuggled in small amounts in small containers because it doesn't take much to blow an aircraft up."

Mr Oppenheimer added that the ingredients would have to be mixed together in the correct proportions and that the resulting mixture would be very unstable and sensitive to shock or heat.

Terrorist gangs have long been aware of the potential of combining common ingredients including liquids to create homemade explosives.

Police believe acetone peroxide triacetone triperoxide (TATP) was the home-made explosive used in London on July 7 last year in the attacks that killed 56 people, including four suicide bombers, on Tube trains and a bus.

TATP is made with commonly available chemicals such as sulphuric acid, which is used to clean drains, and hydrogen peroxide, which is used in hair dyes, and acetone.

Prof Hans Michels, an explosives expert in the department of chemical engineering at Imperial College London, said: "Liquid explosives are very, very sensitive and there are many different types, but we could well be talking about nitroglycerine which has been around for many years.

"It is easy to make and you do not need very much. It can be colourless, pale yellow or brown but you can add colour to make it resemble anything you like, such as fizzy drinks or even baby food.

"In a handbag under an X ray machine it would just appear that you were carrying a harmless liquid, there would be no way of picking it up.

"And once on the plane it would only need a small spark to ignite it. The bomber would probably attempt to get close to the hull and cause a big bang, easily enough to crack the shell and bring down the plane."

Dr Clifford Jones, reader in engineering, University of Aberdeen, said a colourless liquid fuel component of an explosive, such as gasoline or kerosene, could be disguised as mineral water and an oxidant such as ammonium nitrate could be passed off as sugar.

Air Canada Flight Diverted to Baltimore

An Air Canada flight from Montreal to Washington has been diverted to Baltimore-Washington International Airport.

There is word of a suspicious package on board the flight.

Airport spokesman Jonathan Dean says authorities are conducting a thorough search out of "an abundance of caution."

The passengers disembarked and were loaded onto a shuttle bus while the plane was searched.

"6 of 11 Egyptian Students Now in Custody
6 of 11 Missing Egyptian Students Now in Custody; Never Showed Up at Montana State University"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Six of the 11 Egyptian exchange students who failed to show up for their college program are now in custody after three additional students were arrested Thursday, the FBI said.

El Sayed Ahmed Elsayed Ibrahim, 20, and Alaa Abd El Fattah Ali El Bahnasawi, 20, were arrested at a residence in Dundalk, Md., outside Baltimore, by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

Chicago police detained Ahmed Mohamed Mohamed Abou El Ela, 22, at OHare International Airport as he was attempting to book a flight to Montana, the FBI said. Immigration agents later took El Ela into custody.

All are being held on administrative immigration violations because they did not report on time to their monthlong program at Montana State University in Bozeman, Mont."

These young scholars became quite dispersed while trying (very hard, I'm sure) to get to Montana on time.

Minnesota, Chicago, Jersey, Maryland - almost like they were spreading out.

Poor, lost little students! They probably were just given wrong directions by racist Americans who hate Muslims...

Of course today's news will bring out all the local crazies.

In our town today, there was a big hullabaloo about a WWII hand grenade found in the parking lot of a popular furniture store.

Get ready for lots more stories like this.
