I was just in the middle of writing a long and tedious essay, about how to tell a real anti-Semite from a person who too-loudly rejects the charge of anti-Semitism, when a near-perfect real-life example came to hand. That bad actor and worse director Mel Gibson, pulled over for the alleged offense of speeding and the further alleged offense of speeding under the influence, decided that he needed to demand of the arresting officer whether he was or was not Jewish and that he furthermore needed to impart the information that all the world's wars are begun by those of Semitic extraction.
Call me thin-skinned if you must, but I think that this qualifies. I also think that the difference between the blood-alcohol levelsand indeed the speed limitsthat occasioned the booking are insufficient to explain the expletives (as Gibson has since claimed in a typically self-pitying and verbose statement put out by his publicist). One does not abruptly decide, between the first and second vodka, or the ticks of the indicator of velocity, that the Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion are valid after all.
There's a lot to dislike about Gibson. He is given to furious tirades against homosexuals of the sort that make one wonder if he has some kind of subliminal or "unaddressed" problem. His vulgar and nasty movies, which also feature this prejudice, are additionally replete with the cheapest caricatures of the English.
Because father and son are deluded and you are trying to split hairs - you sound like Bill Clinon. "Depends on what the meaning of the word is, is".
There has always been a double standard. This faux outrage iver Gibson is just another example.
I was just interviewed for ABC channel 7 here in Los Angeles as I was near a local supermarket. I told the interviewer that there was an old saying, "When the alchohol goes in, the truth comes out".
I read editorials against them in the NY Post. Jackson apologized - Sharpton did not and never will.
Luke 6:44 For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes. 45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh. 46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
What has gone with Gibson sure reminds me of the above Bible passage..... So here is he question that I have....How on earth can a someone make a movie like The Passion (and allow himself to be denounced and ridiculed as he was by Hollyweird) and yet basically be an evil man in his heart? Ah... it's a good thing that scripture has an answer to everything 2 Corinthians 11:13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. 14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. 15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.
Before the current pope condemns Israel he had better look at what his people in Germany were doing in WWII. Israel is fighting for its survival. The Catholic Church should wake up!
I agree with you, however I'm trying to look at it from Mel's point of view. His film was treated with extreme prejudice from within the community he works in.
If you are willing to call people names, with the intent of harming their image, career, and livlihood. Be prepared to take on the same or worse.
After the scathing attacks on Gibson by the ADL (and who knows how much Hollywierd-behind-the-scenes flak he got) over "The Passion of the Christ" and growing up around an anti-semitic father with his "I told you so's", it's a wonder he didn't say more.
Not that he should have said anything. What ever happened to "yes officer, no officer, have a nice evening officer"?
I stated simple, true facts. It's regrettable that the truth doesn't sit well with you. Hutton Gibson appears to be a full-blown nutcase, not a liar.
Yeah, imply I'm an anti-semite because of what I posted. Nice.
But not in the NYT or Wash Post. Did the NY Post call for his immediate removal from consideration?
You are certainly keeping your promise to post as many threads as it takes to wear people down and convince them that Mel Gibson is a raving Jew-hater.
I admire your determination, if nothing else. (Not the least of which you are not a good thread host!)
Christopher Hitchens concluded in 2004 that Mel Gibson was antisemite and Jew-hating, so this is no revealation two years later.
I agree with you.
Yes I'm serious. How many derogatory names on top of Anti-semite was Mel called because he made a film?
I could see where all of the negativity around that could manifest itself into something ugly, if he didn't believe it before.
I didn't say it WAS right, I said that there was plenty of crap thrown at Mel that it could make him wonder, whether Dad was right. That's all.
well said........ again!
Yea, well..what if he wasnt drunk and he said the Jews were behind all the wars and the rest of it? It would be hard to defend, wouldnt it? Would you think saying.."I take responsibility" would be enough?
IMO, .12 alchohol level just isnt high enough to hide behind. Cripes, Im pretty sure I could keep my mouth shut with that meager level of inebriation.
Hollywood's money men are not going to forgive him, but maybe he doesent need them at all. (I guess we'll have to wait and see.)
You love everybody because you are a BrooklynBoy!!
