Post-Invasion Intel Showed WMD Went To Syria
Captain's Table Blog ^ | 29 July 2006 | Morrissey

Among the captured documents of the Iraqi Intelligence Services is a memo written in Arabic that describes pre-war intel from an Iraqi source working in Syria. Dated July 13, the memo itself was written after the invasion, but it describes the movement of trucks from Iraq into Syria just before the American invasions. Document ISGQ-2005-00022470 has notations reading "DOD" that indicate the Pentagon has already reviewed the data:

ISGQ-2005-00022470 PAGE (1) MR. HOGGER (KURDISH NAME) REGARDS, KINDLY REVIEW THOSE PAGES AND PLEASE FORWARD THEM TO MRS.MONA FOR FURTHER REVIEW AFTER TRANSLATION THANK YOU SIGNED ABO ABDULLAH JULY 13TH

ESQUIRE, THE DIRECTOR OF COORDINATION AND FOLLOW UP OFFICE

July.13th

Subject: we have information about the location of Mass Destruction Weapons

On Moharram 10th (Arabic calendar), prior to US/allied invasion to Iraq, fifty (50) Iraqi trucks entered Syria as convoys (or groups), I met some the drivers of those trucks, they got no idea about the content of their trucks.

The loads basically came from some where in Baghdad, Iraqi intelligence were escorting the loads. During their tripe, those truck drivers were stopped and asked frequently by the intelligence officers about whether or not they got any idea about the content of their loads, the divers replied “we have no idea”, then the officers would say “thank you”.

Upon their arrival to Deayr Ezoor city/ Syria, the drivers were ordered to get down, elements from Syrian intelligence got into the trucks, they took the trucks to big barracks for downloading.

After that; Iraqi drivers got their trucks back, they got $200 as a reward.

The drivers told me that it was their second time to bring such secret shipment; the first shipment was Moharram 1st.

I have a friend in Syria working in Syrian company, the man has ½ of the company, and the other ½ belongs to a Syrian businessman.

This Iraqi person, a former counselor at Iraqi embassies, has strong connections with Iraqi embassy in Syria, he knows all Iraqi intelligence men there, and he has no idea that I am working with the Iraqi opposition in Syria.

I used to visit him daily during that period to listen to the important news.

When the trucks arrived to Syria, I visited him, told him “Iraqi weapons got inside Syria”, he replied “who told you”, I said “I have my own resources”, he replied “don’t tell any one about that because actually it is inside”.

For those unfamiliar with the Muslim calendar, 10 Mohorram would equate to March 14th for 2003 -- or a little over a week before our invasion of Iraq. The opposition source told the Kurds that the trucks arrived in Dayr az Zawr, a Syrian city on the Euphrates in the expansive eastern section of Syria. A look at a map shows Dayr az Zawr in the middle of nowhere, with plenty of space to hide stockpiles from 50 trucks.

After unloading the trucks -- taking care to separate the Iraqi drivers from their vehicles while doing so -- the Syrians returned the trucks to the drivers and paid each of them $200, a rather princely sum for an Iraqi in 2003. And that was the second such convoy that IIS officers conducted into Syria; the first had been on Mohorram 1, or March 5th.

While this is not quite a smoking gun, it provides yet another piece of evidence pointing to a massive operation to hide Iraq's WMDs. Saddam Hussein must have thought that if the Coalition could not find the WMDs, they would have to withdraw and allow him to assume power once more. It would explain why he allowed so much of his army to disappear rather than fight; he expected to command them again within a few weeks. In fact, Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri told Time Magazine that Saddam had made a mistake allowing the army to fight at all:

Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri, Saddam's top lieutenant with a $10 million bounty on his head, struck a defiant tone in an intervew appearing on Time magazine's Web site in which he wrote out answers to questions sent in May through intermediaries. Time said it wasn't clear when his answers were written.

Al-Douri, the highest-ranking figure from Saddam's regime still at large and the "king of clubs" on the most wanted list, said Saddam blundered by having his army confront the U.S.-led invasion force instead of holding it in reserve to fight a guerrilla war, but he said the old army has bounced back.

This movement of the weapons also appeased Russia, which helped Saddam build them. The Russians did not want the US to discover the weapons stores and pressed Saddam to get them somewhere else, and fast. American intel has long claimed to have seen these convoys streaming across western Iraq into Syria, and this provides a more complete picture as to what they did when they arrived.

Exactly. In fact, it was one of the first stories that came out in the ensuing weeks. I remember some headlines that read "Russian Spetnatz helped Saddam move WMDs to Syria". Wether or not the Russians were that extensively involved, it's SO OBVIOUS this is the only place Saddam COULD have gone. Never a doubt in my mind they're anywhere else.

I was shocked that no one followed up on this in the months and now, years, that followed. It was quietly dismissed despite being the most obvious place he'd send them.
Yes, there must be too much difficulty regarding both the Syrian and Russian govts on following this up.

I mean when you broadcast to the world that Saddam has these mobile truck labs - he ain't stupid - he's gonna move them before we come. Syria is the only place he had to go.

The remarkable thing is that none of them appear to have been furnished to Hezbollah. You have to wonder why not.

Because Israel would not hesitate to nuke Hezbollah held territory and Syria if they were used.

I don't think that's true. Nukes for Israel will the weapon of last resort.

They inflict massive amounts of civilian casualties and will not accomplish the military objective.

The best way for Israel to eliminate any support for it after a chemical artillery shell landing within its territory would be for them to respond with a nuke.

I shudder to think what would happen if the WMD's get into Hezbollah's hands from Syria. I guess Syria would dedicate the song "You Light Up My Life" to Israel.

Part of the reason this is important is Dems will use the mistaken belief that NO WMD were found to hamper or block action against Iran. They will say we had bad intel there, we have bad intel on Iran. EVEN if they agree Iran is working toward nukes, they'll say it is not an "imminent threat," and not allow action to go forward.

The question is will Assad and the Iranians be dumb enough to use Saddam's former WMD on Northern Israel? If so Damascus will be reduced to rubble and Tehran the same.

Nasrallah threatens to fire missiles at central Israel
By Yoav Stern, Haaretz Correspondent and News Agencies

Hezbollah leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah on Saturday vowed to fire rockets on communities in central Israel if the military operation in Lebanon continued, and accused Israel of being an American "slave."

"The bombardment of Afula and its military base is the beginning ... Many
cities in the center [of Israel] will be targeted in the 'beyond Haifa' phase if the savage aggression continues on our country, people and villages," Nasrallah said in a speech aired on Hezbollah's Al-Manar television.

Yep - but this has made not a shred of differnce to those who opposed the war. Facts matter not to them

But it's still important to get the facts out. Some people, perhaps will start to notice.

Totally agree with that - I didn't mean to sound so negative. We must get the facts of WMD out - some will change their mind - I saw the results of a poll that showed that more Americans now accept there was WMD than did so this time last year.

It's just that the liberals I know just shrug and go on to their next supposed grievance.

Kind regards

I hear you, I have some of those in my family too and it can be extremely frustrating trying to talk sense to them. They always revert to the good old "the media is controlled by Bush" line when the debate gets bad for them!

Yep. The war PR has been horribly played by our president. This is intelligence that could have been revealed ad nauseum in the months leading up to the invasion and then throughout the war - can't tell me our government didn't know about this. Now we're settling for a proxy war, using Israel. Nothing else will be done prior to the election.

I have a differing theory. One of the criticisms of the proposed invasion of Iraq over WMDs was that the threat of military force would lead Saddam to scatter the WMDs. That may well have happened, and leads to a possibly far more dangerous situation regarding those weapons if Hiz now has some of them. So the Dems are waaay too far invested in the "Bush lied" agenda to want to investigate this theory, and the Bush Admin has already taken all the political damage they are gonna take from that line of attack, and do NOT want to open up a new line of attack - and also want to keep the dispersal of Iraqi WMDs quiet for security reasons.

Just a theory, but IMO it fits the facts.

You're not just right, you are dead on correct. I saw the photos they had on Debka at the time. Since they have been removed, nobody would believe me. But, my question then, as now, is...why didn't we plaster this on worldwide tv?

:O)

I seem to remember a story, over a year ago, and probably aired by Quinn, that a bunch of Russian scientists were found, working in a hidden lab complex dug into some mountains near the Baka valley, who had been on Saddam's payroll, but were getting out since Saddam was no longer able to meet payroll-----, at the time I figured something would come out in the MSN, but it never did. Of course, I don't follow the tripe on the MSN all that closely. Know of any way to back-track a story like that?

No one ever seems to remember that Hussein took the extreme step of burying MIG aircraft in the desert. Any clues there as to his mode of thinking?

I normally just do a search using Google, though I admit I'm not very good, and have dial-up. I spell it Bekka (though it is spelled other ways I assume) and sometimes if I know it is not in a certain year, such as 2006, I will add "-2006" to search. Quinn often uses stuff Brit Hume covers on Fox, so it might very well be in an archive of Hume's Grapevine (R). Today, for some reason, my computer is acting slower than normal. Maybe I'll try to use wireless if I remember about this specific question... I do know of reports of they being moved, but not scientists getting unpaid. I'll look...

""I am absolutely sure that Russian Spetsnatz units moved WMD out of Iraq before the war," stated John Shaw, the former deputy undersecretary for international technology security." and "According to Spertzel, the Russians on the U.N. inspection team in Iraq were "paranoid" about his efforts to uncover smallpox production." I haven't yet found anything about scientists in Bekka Valley on Saddam's payroll being unpaid...

I couldn't have said it better, disgusting isn't it? I hope others are as outraged and enraged as we, maybe we'll be able to put all that rage to work somehow, all for the better of course.

Meanwhile, my heart and prayers go out constantly for our men and women in uniform sacrificing so much for our benefit and for the benefit of others around the world regardless if they appreciate it or not. May their rewards be great--and they will.
