DEARBORN, Mich., July 27 (UPI) -- With a population of nearly 30,000 Lebanese-Americans, the Detroit suburb of Dearborn, Mich., is coming under intense scrutiny from federal investigators.
The reason is that in Dearborn many residents see no contradiction between being a loyal American and backing Hezbollah in its war with Israel, the Chicago Tribune reports.
Watching the fighting going on in the Middle East, the Tribune says many in Dearborn feel betrayed and unfairly targeted by the U.S. government.
Last May the owner of a chain of 15 restaurants called La Shish was indicted for tax evasion, accused of using a double set of books so he could funnel some $20 million to Hezbollah.
Talal Chahine fled to Lebanon to avoid prosecution but reportedly has denied any wrongdoing.
His case of one of several that link Americans with smuggling operations of illicit drugs, cigarettes and baby formula to profit Hezbollah, designated a terrorist group by the U.S. State Department.

These people need to learn a new word....NISEI
I have forgotten...Is Detroit now referred to a New Falujah, or is it Dearborn?
..New Falujah
I like Rush Limbaughs version ?
The enemy within.

We used to LOVE to go to La Shish. The atmosphere is really cool and you can watch them make pita right near the tables. My girls always thought that it was where Jasmine from Aladdin lives.
When this story broke, it ended our eating there. If anyone is north of Detroit and would like the same great food at a cheaper price and NOT supporting terrorists, go to the Meer at 16 mile and Dequindre. It is owned by Chaldean Catholics in the area. Ask for Moe.
You're right - but I had to stop eating at LaShish when all this came out. There's plenty of other good Middle Eastern restaurants around where I don't have to worry about my lunch money going to support terrorists.
Ever been to 'Ikes's' on Van Dyke and about 17mile?
Is that a middle eastern restauant?
Did they have a lunch buffet in the past?
If that's the one, my hubby was there at one point but we have yet to go.
Until somebody can do it better, I won't be able to help myself.
Try the Meer!
They have "to die for" Shawarma. If you go for lunch, they have a shawarma sandwich, with the pickle inside and just the right amount of tahini for real inexpensive.
I remember one Mother's Day, we got carryout at lunch time and fed four of us for about 13.00.
Tallahs (sp?) is the place your thinking about. That place was great but somebody else took over and ruined it and now it's closed.
If you have to give them your money - go ahead. Just make sure you sprinkle it with a little pork blood first.

LOLOLOL!
>>Yeah, it's Lebanese, it's pretty good but, no LaShish. Try the Sheik Al'mishee if you go and even if it's not on the menu that day they will make it for you.<<
We'll have to give it a try! Thanks!
I couldn't agree more.
There is not a gas station or party store in Southeast Michigan that is not owned by Arabs.
Know of any decent Chaldean places on the west side -- Westland, Canton area ? I won't go to that craphole called Ann Arbor.
Detroit is 90% black. Dearborn is 90% Arab.
I make my own falafel.
