Defense Minister Amir Peretz said Sunday that Israel would accept a temporary international force, preferably headed by NATO, deployed along the Lebanese border to keep Hizbullah guerrillas away from Israel, according to officials in Peretz's office.
"Israel's goal is to see the Lebanese army deployed along the border with Israel, but we understand that we are taking about a weak army and that in the midterm period Israel will have to accept a multinational force," he said according to his office.
Peretz made the comments during a closed meeting with visiting German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
US President George W. Bush's Chief of Staff, Josh Bolten said Sunday that international peacekeepers might be needed in Lebanon to help end the fighting between Israel and Hizbullah, but that US troop involvement was unlikely.

Congress should authorize a state of Israel quarter. Now that would send a clear message to the terrorists, Hezbollah, Hamas, al Qaeda and other enemies.
Maybe we can make Israel part of the U.S., if they are interested. Then any attack on Israel would be the same as an attack on the United States.
There is a difference between NATO and the UN. Membership in NATO is not open to Israel's enemies for one. Asking for NATO intervention means that if Syria or Iran want to enter the conflict they would have to go through NATO first. I think that this is a shrewd calculation by Israel and the United States.
Part 1, I would agree. However, I do not believe that congress has the b@lls to do such a thing.
Part 2, Sounds interesting. It would most certainly have all of the muzzies crying that they are victims to American agression.
There is only one nation on Earth that is not an enemy of Israel, and that is the US. And the US will not, and should not volunteer for this mission. It would simply be a target, as it was before.
It appears that Israel may have more than just one country that would defend it against terrorism. Members of the European Union and/or NATO would fit that role, with the US leading the way diplomatically, it may work.
There is a solution with the help nations who are against facism and terrorism acting together. Moslem nations are not reliable and the United Nations is ineffective and treacherous. Israel cannot fight this battle alone, all peace loving and courageous people need to join in.
I believe that it will happen.

Oh, great, put Brit soldiers under the command of a French General. I don't even want to think about it.
If you make them a state, Americans can travel there and so many of ours are terrorists, Israel couldn't take the chance. Otherwise, an interesting thought.
Couldn't do it in past 25 yers, so why even concern ourselves with the question?
Then Israel can accept the deal, providing that Denmark, the US, and Poland make up the force...
...then the diplomats will boot it around for a few weeks, and then reject it. Which then starts the process all over again.
And in the meantime, Israel has a free hand to continue what it needs to do against Hizbollah.
Not a bad deal... to be able to look good on the diplomatic front AND still be able to kick Hizbollah's @ss.

Forget the UN! A UN force (UNIFIL) has been in Lebanon since 1985. Indeed, for what they're worth, they are still there. Somewhere...
UNIFIL was specifically charged with policing the border and stopping arms shipments to Hizbollah.
And you can see how well that worked...
That would be correct. Though the constitutions or statutes of some of the individual nations prohibit their militaries from deployment outside Europe.
Germany is one of these. They couldn't send troops to Afghanistan...but they did send some naval units to the Mediterranean. I believe the Mediterranean littoral is considered within their sphere of operations, though, so German forces could be employed on the Israel-Lebanon border.
Complete and total fantasy.
And I would have a British commander in charge of this mission. He can enlist the help of French, German, Italian, and Spanish troops.
Americans do not need to be involved in this as we have other pressing matters at hand.

We know whose boots will be on the ground. The world loves to hate the US, but what would they do without us.
Right, I recall that the Russian zone in Kosovo was a disaster.
