'Israel would accept NATO on border'
The Jerusalem Post ^ | July 23, 2006 | Jerusalem Post

Defense Minister Amir Peretz said Sunday that Israel would accept a temporary international force, preferably headed by NATO, deployed along the Lebanese border to keep Hizbullah guerrillas away from Israel, according to officials in Peretz's office.

"Israel's goal is to see the Lebanese army deployed along the border with Israel, but we understand that we are taking about a weak army and that in the midterm period Israel will have to accept a multinational force," he said according to his office.

Peretz made the comments during a closed meeting with visiting German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

US President George W. Bush's Chief of Staff, Josh Bolten said Sunday that international peacekeepers might be needed in Lebanon to help end the fighting between Israel and Hizbullah, but that US troop involvement was unlikely.

Nato is not going to be able to deal with this problem.

Maybe they're just going to let them use up all their excuses before Israel lets loose for real.

"Nato is not going to be able to deal with this problem."

Not because of "able" but because of "lack of will and wisdom".

Right. How many years have they been there now with no results. Not a good idea. Israel needs to put a major hurt on the terrorist.

God, I hope so.

If this is stopped prematurely by political promises and appeasement, more innocents will be murdered.

If Nato moves in, I'm hoping that it will be the Brits, Germans, and French who make up the force.

Been there, done that.

It seems to me that Israel needs a secure border either by occupation or by intervention of the UN or NATO. Israel cannot occupy southern Lebanon, been there and done that. Short of total war with Iran and Syria, Hezbollah cannot be taken out. Given the choice of the UN or NATO, I would take the latter. Israel wants someone that they can trust between them and Hezbollah.

Bad idea. Sooner or later, the thugs of the Middle East must be dealt with. Israel is off to a decent start right now. Start bringing in political "solutions" and they'll be right back where they were in no time.

The wolves are at the door and they suggest NATO's efforts will help? too much good faith on israels part. They would be better to hunt the wolves for a while.

There have been no NATO Troops in Lebanon.

It's misleading to say that Nato or the UN should provide a secure border because what it really means is that the US should provide a secure border. Neither Nato nor the UN does anything without the US actually doing it.

Great -- one more military campaign that has absolutely nothing to do with NATO's mission.

Israel is only performing a short-term fix. They can't defeat Hezbollah because they can't defeat the combined power of Syria and Iran. Even if Israel killed every single Hezbollah fighter in Lebanon, they'd be back in a couple of years and be armed to the teeth. The prospect of killing Jews is too tempting for the Syrians and Iranians.

It is Biblical prophesy that the Anti-Christ will sign a peace traty with Israel

It is Biblical Prophesy that Israel will be at peace for 3 1/2 years before Iran, Ethiopia and Libya attack, with Russia from the north attacking, too.

It is Biblical prophesy that part of their attack is to remove the armies of the Anti-Christ.

It is Biblical prophesy that the Anti-Christ is from a revived Roman Empire.

NATO is the only force that is from the area we know as The Revived Roman Empire

This could be the beginning of that time period.

NATO?

That would be not the French, but it would include Germans right? And this would mean the USA and others are at War against Hiz Bolla if the NATO forces were attacked by them?

Weird.

It's a mutual defense treaty among its member nations -- which is why NATO troops were dispatched to Afghanistan to topple the Taliban government after 9/11.

I may be wrong about this, but I'm quite certain there is nothing in the NATO bylaws that indicates the member nations only agree to come to each other's aid in the event of an attack by Warsaw Pact nations.

"'Israel would accept NATO on border'"

Great, but NATO in this case means Europeans. I doubt that many European countries want to be involved in that mess. Anyway It will take at least weeks to deploy there serious forces.
