Defense Minister Amir Peretz said Sunday that Israel would accept a temporary international force, preferably headed by NATO, deployed along the Lebanese border to keep Hizbullah guerrillas away from Israel, according to officials in Peretz's office.
"Israel's goal is to see the Lebanese army deployed along the border with Israel, but we understand that we are taking about a weak army and that in the midterm period Israel will have to accept a multinational force," he said according to his office.
Peretz made the comments during a closed meeting with visiting German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
US President George W. Bush's Chief of Staff, Josh Bolten said Sunday that international peacekeepers might be needed in Lebanon to help end the fighting between Israel and Hizbullah, but that US troop involvement was unlikely.

She didn't say how large the force would be. Alliot-Marie made her comments at a press conference after meeting Abu Dhabi's crown prince Sheik Mohammed bin Zayed. While the fighting in Lebanon between Israeli and Hezbollah forces was part of a larger problem, Alliot-Marie added that a quick end to the clashes was needed. "It is not possible to isolate the ongoing crisis from its wider framework in the region but, first of all, we should look for a quick solution to the ongoing problem," she said. France, which has historical ties to Lebanon, backed the idea of an international peacekeeping force at last week's Group of Eight summit in Russia. It is likely to be discussed at Wednesday's meeting in Rome on the crisis, which will be attended by U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and other key players in the region.
Despite this early show of solidarity, NATO would face a crisis little more than a year later, when on 10 February 2003, France and Belgium vetoed the procedure of silent approval concerning the timing of protective measures for Turkey in case of a possible war with Iraq. Germany did not use its right to break the procedure but said it supported the veto.

It's ridiculous - is NATO going to be more willing to accept casualties dealing with the scumbags? Of course not...... so the Hezbo-Nazis will continue to do whatever they want unless Israel exterminates them now. When there are a few thousand dead Hezbo-nazis and the rest have fled, then MAYBE there's something to talk about in terms of a very vigorous NATO force with robust ROEs. Otherwise, it's just another foolish effort to save the jihadists so they can have yet another go at Israel.
This is just another within a string of play-nice attempts by Israel.
They know that this will more than likely be shot down.

Great, but NATO in this case means Europeans. I doubt that many European countries want to be involved in that mess. Anyway It will take at least weeks to deploy there serious forces.

They should put them on the Syrian/Lebanese border. This way arms cannot get to the Hezzies.

The UN is an ineffective organization! We should get the US out of the UN and the UN out of the US.
This international force is the Saud's and Arab states idea. They have been pushing it for months now first for the Palestinians/ Hamas and now for Lebanon and Hezbollah.
They are trying to cut short Israel's offensive before they can do too much damage to the terrorists organizations.
Israel is a fool if they let themselves fall for this again like they did with the U. N forces in the sixties.
All they will do is provide cover for the terrorists to build up their forces and they will be unable to fire back without injuring the international troops.
They cannot trust anyone to protect them but God. They have no friends or allies in any government including ours.
The Saudi Prince has already in the last three days been to France, Russia and Great Britain with this garbage and now he is bringing it to President Bush and Rice to get them to help shove this Trojan Horse on Israel.
Israel had the right idea of calling all these troops up and going in to clean them out but the international pressure is already started to get them to stop.
Watch the tone of the international community switch back against Israel after the Saudis visit the White House and they start pushing for Israel to back off and accept this peace keeping force lead by France probably with a mixture of others that don't even like Israel.
Once again the world misses a chance to take a firm stand against these Islamic terrorists and the Saudis who are spreading this madness, will make babbling idiots of the U.S. and Western leaders again.

I really hope that Israel doesn't take the bait to back off. Right now Israel has a leader with chutzpah. What the US needs to do is allow Israel to finish the job.
