AmerenUE reports OVER 340,000 people out in metro St. Louis ALONE, 3 building collapses in the city, roof off parts of Lambert Airport, power out in one terminal, BUT the cardinals game is still on.

EDIT::: Debris from collapsed building on the Eads Bridge across the mississippi, Metrolink train service is DOWN, Mayor slay mentions this as one of the worst storms to hit the metro st. louis area in a long time.

The New Madrid Earthquake, the largest earthquake ever recorded in the contiguous United States,

I'm usually defending Wikipedia but in this case they're not up on the latest science.

The most recent peer-reviewed papers on the quakes have reduced their estimated magnitudes significantly. This isn't exciting, hence you haven't seen this mentioned in the mainstream media.

Sullivan probably didn't even get a drop. This storm came almost straight south from northern IL and didn't get very far west of the city at all.

BTW - Sullivan is actually where I was born :)

This is the important factor in my book (italic and image) and the damage as well as the costs will be HUGH if the NM ever lets loose...

There are estimates that the (NM) earthquakes were felt strongly over 50,000 square miles, and moderately across nearly one million square miles. The historic San Francisco earthquake of 1906, by comparison, was felt moderately over 60,000 square miles.

Well we had a bow echo come through our area about 7 years ago and the damage was greater then any tornado we have ever had, tress and powerlines were down from as far north as Sheboygan south to the state line and westward Madison.

My sister who lives at Lake St. Louis said her area got the terrible wind and rain but nothing else. No damage, to her knowledge, and she has power.

yes I know... the graphic was show how far and strongly the 6.0 on the NM was ~vs~ the 6.7 that was in SF.

a 6.0 on the NM will be a lot more damaging and wide spread than a 6.7 in SF.

I am also in the area... I am about 85 miles south of STL along the Mississippi River. If a 6.0 hits I doubt my home will still be standing.

Now I really need to hit the bed ;-)

BREAKING NEWS: It has just been reported the President George W. Bush was responsible for this natural disaster; a payback for the city of St. Louis voting Democratic in the last two Presidential Elections.

I was born and raised in New Madrid County, still have a lot of relatives there.

If you're 85 miles south of St. Louis, I have a daughter just south of you in Jackson, Mo.

For a change the wind came from the weather instead of from Braves bats! The ump let them play after the storm because it would otherwise have been made up in 100 degree heat tomorrow afternoon. Cards website reports 30 injured fans at the park from the weather, 5 of whom were taken to the hospital (2 back injuries, 1 dislocated hip, 1 dislocated shoulder and 1 seizure unrelated to the weather.) The storm also wreaked havoc throughout the new park, shredding parts of the field tarp and destroying the plastic sheeting in the press box. The FOX studio was tipped over and demolished. Cards still won 8-3 behind Carpenter in spite of him learning before the game his house was out of power and his family had fled to a motel for the night.

That was something I picked up from a one hour documentary about the New Madrid fault. I'm not prepared to defend it.

We went through that storm last night. Twenty minutes south of St. Louis. High winds lots of rain and our power went out at 8:40 but came back on about 4:30 this morning.

The lightning was a once in a lifetime show....

I am one of the fortunate ones. We have power.

There are 480,000 people without power this morning in St. Louis, and it's forecast to be the hottest day yet with temps over 100 degrees. The city officials and teams managing the power repairs say they think this is the worst storm to hit St. Louis in over 30 years. And we may have more storms this afternoon.
