More Than 300 Iranian Students Announce Readiness To Defend Lebanon
Fars News Agency (Internet Version-WWW)
Monday, July 17, 2006

More than 313 active members of the Union of the Islamic Associations of Independent University Students from across the country have in a letter to the secretary-general of the Lebanese Hizballah announced readiness to take part in the war against the cruel and terrorist Zionist regime.

The Union of Islamic Associations of Independent University Students says in the letter: Today, at this sensitive juncture of the life of the Islamic ummah, the first line of Jihad for God and the center of Islamic awareness and struggle against oppression and conspiracies of the world of arrogance and capitalism, the dear Palestine and Lebanon, are proud.

The letter adds: In fact, the usurper, blood thirsty and criminal Zionist regime is the full portrayal of those who seek to drag humanity into slavery and kill spirituality, justice and freedom for the sake of the material world, lust, and their own greed for power. And in return, the innocent nations of Palestine and Lebanon are the front runners of the Islamic world against so much greed. (passage omitted: the letter calls Israel a cancerous tumor, condemns the killings of innocent people, and claims victory of the Muslims in the end)

Iran Official Says Conditions Will Change To Hizballahs Advantage
Mehr News Agency WWW-Text
Monday, July 17, 2006

TEHRAN, July 17 (MNA) -- Hezbollahs war against the Zionist regime will be prolonged and conditions will change to Hezbollahs advantage, Ali-Asghar Mohammadi, the director general of the Foreign Ministrys Department for Arab Middle Eastern and North African Countries Affairs, said here on Monday.

Currently, over 10,000 Palestinians are incarcerated in Israeli prisons, while the Zionist regime has rejected all demands and efforts to obtain the release of the prisoners, Mohammadi told participants in a panel discussion held to study the latest developments in Palestine.

Over the past four months, the Lebanese movement announced several times that it would take revenge on the Zionist regime for its refusal to release the Muslim prisoners, he added.

Mohammadi compared the current Israeli assault on the Lebanese territories with the 17-day war in Lebanon in 1996, adding that in both wars, the Zionists targeted innocent civilians.

In 1996, international organizations, the UN Security Council, and the United States paved the way for the Zionists victory by defending their activities. However, all their endeavors were doomed to failure, he stated.

At the time, the Lebanese Hezbollah did not possess its current military capabilities, Mohammadi said.

In view of its collapsing economy, the Zionist regime can not withstand an extended war, he opined.

Mohammadi called on France, Russia, and China to play a more active role in settling the current crisis, adding that their stances should not be influenced by the wrong analyses of the United States and Israel.

Experience has shown that resistance is the most successful and most economical strategy, he said in conclusion.

The Hamas representative in Tehran, Abu Osaman Abdel Moaata, and Palestinian Ambassador Salah al-Zawawi also participated in the panel discussion.

Moaata said that the elimination of the Zionist regime is no longer impossible.

The Zionists have been confused and shocked by Hezbollahs great military operations, he added.

Al-Zawawi said that Lebanon has restored the honor and dignity of Islamic nations.

The Zionist regime should realize that this resistance will not be limited to Lebanon and Palestine, he observed.

The Palestinian ambassador to Tehran stated that the Palestinians expect the Israelis to release the 425 Palestinian children and 25 Palestinian women detained in their prisons.

Al-Zawawi said that Hezbollah has tried every political and diplomatic approach to obtain the release of the Palestinian prisoners, but the Zionist regime, which is the mercenary of the United States, has always refused to comply.

What is currently happening in Lebanon is a pre-planned operation and has nothing to do with the capture of two Israeli soldiers by Hezbollah forces, he opined.

At the end of his remarks, al-Zawawi expressed gratitude to Iran for its stance in support of the resistance.
(Description of Source: Tehran Mehr News Agency WWW-Text in English -- Launched on 22 June 2003, its managing director Parviz Esma'ili stated that the news agency primarily aims at promoting the Islamic culture.)

They have another system called Carpet....that blows up a past in front of landminds to create a path. They also have sonic systems for RPGs which may be shot at them from the side.

The problems we have with IEDs are that they are large explosives planted alongside the road or next to it. Israeli tanks driving into wherever they are going would simply shoot any suspiciously parked vehicles along the way....plus most the people are gone from the area.....not the same as Iraq where you are driving through crowded neighborhoods, etc.

Something you may notice is that military types tend to only look at the military picture, and only that part of the picture which falls into their area of responsibility.

I have nothing but the greatest respect for General Tommy Franks, for General Fred Franks, for the military record of Barry McCaffrey and Norman Schwartzkopf, but time and again reading their memoirs or hearing them speak, you can't help but notice this...nearsightedness...if you will. You can even tell roughly what rank a given officer retired at, McCaffrey, for example, rarely exhibits his military genius above division level, while Fred Franks tends to stop at Corps level and below.

It may be that such focus is part of the package, and that alternatives would result in less than sterling protection for those under their command, but when these people try to advise others, above their rank, on operational level or political levels, this limited way of thinking can be downright dangerous.

Israel has a professional military organization, one the whole world learned a lot from during the 1973 war. They may not have corps scale maneuver experience since then, but they are closely allied with the US military, partners in training in fact, and I consider significant blunders to be highly unlikely.

That said, it is a widely held belief that ground operations are required for winnowing out dismounted infantry, especially guerrilla forces. If, repeat, if, Israel decides against a large scale or any ground incursion into Lebanon, it will be because of valid military concerns, in the larger view, not incompetence.

Hezbullah: A Problem "Over There" - Right? Wrong!

No matter what TV station you tune into these days, changes are the news broadcasts will be discussing the conflict between Israel and Hezbullah, Many assume there's nothing to worry about - after all, Hezbullah is a terrorist group "over there", right?

Wrong!

In fact, if you've bought black market cigarettes, rolling papers, or Viagra in Michigan or New York, you may have unwittingly sent money to Hezzbullah as well.

Just a few days before Hezbullah crossed the Lebanese-Israeli border and kidnapped two Israeli soldiers, two men stood before a judge in Detroit and plead guilty in Detroit to providing financial support to Hezbullah.

The men, Imad Majed Hamadeh and Theodore Schenk, plead guilty to conspiracy to violate the "Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act" and using the proceeds to help fund the Hezbullah terror group.

Sixteen other men have also been indicted, and are facing trial in January.

The press release from the US Attorney in Detroit provides intriguing details about the operation:

Imad Majed Hamadeh, 51, of Dearborn Heights and Theodore Schenk, 73, of Miami Beach, Florida each pleaded guilty to an Indictment charging them with conspiracy to Violate the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO), United States Attorney, Stephen J. Murphy announced today.

Hamadeh and Schenk pleaded guilty in United States District Court in Detroit before the Honorable Gerald E. Rosen, United States District Judge. The indictment charged Hamadeh, Schenk, and 16 other defendants with operating a criminal enterprise to traffic in contraband cigarettes, counterfeit Zig Zag rolling papers and counterfeit Viagra, to produce counterfeit cigarette tax stamps, to transport stolen property, and to launder money.

Some of the profits derived from the illegal enterprise were given to Hizballah, a foreign terrorist organization, according to the Indictment. Hamadeh and Schenk face a maximum possible penalty of 20 years imprisonment and a $250,000 fine.

U. S. Attorney Murphy was joined in the announcement by Daniel D. Roberts, Special Agent in Charge of the Detroit FBI; Valerie J. Goddard, Special Agent in Charge, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; Brian M. Moskowitz, Special Agent in Charge, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Maurice Aouate, Special Agent in Charge of the Detroit Field Office of the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation; and Michael Cleary, Special Agent in Charge, FDA-Office of Criminal Investigation.

"Combating terrorism and protecting our citizens at home and abroad, is the Department of Justice's number one priority. Raising money for designated terrorist organizations, like Hizballah, is a serious crime which will be vigorously pursued in the Eastern District of Michigan," U.S. Attorney Murphy said. "We will do everything we can to expose, disrupt and prevent any all criminal activity which supports terrorist organizations."

According to Brian M. Moskowitz, Special Agent in Charge of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Office of Investigations in Detroit, "ICE will continue to work with other law enforcement agencies to dismantle criminal organizations. Racketeering is a serious crime and ICE will continue to investigate those who exploit our borders to facilitate their criminal enterprise."

The Indictment charges that between 1996 and 2004, a group of individuals worked together in a criminal enterprise to traffic in contraband cigarettes, counterfeit Zig Zag rolling papers and counterfeit Viagra, to produce counterfeit cigarette tax stamps, to transport stolen property, and to launder money. The enterprise operated from Lebanon, Canada, China, Brazil, Paraguay and the United States.

Also named in the Indictment and currently awaiting a January 7, 2007 trial are: Karim Hassan Nasser, 37, of Windsor, Ontario; Fadi Mohamad-Musbah Hammoud, 33, of Dearborn; Majid Mohamad Hammoud, 39, of Dearborn Heights; Jihad Hammoud, 47, of Dearborn; Youssef Aoun Bakri, 36, of Dearborn Heights; Ali Najib Berjaoui, 39, of Dearborn; Mohammed Fawzi Zeidan, 41, of Canton; and Adel Isak, 37, of Sterling Heights.

An Indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. A defendant is entitled to a fair trial in which it will be the government's burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Others charged in the Indictment, who are currently wanted as fugitives, believed to be outside the United States, are: Imad Mohamad-Musbah Hammoud, 37 of Lebanon, formerly of Dearborn; Hassan Ali Al-Mosawi, 49, of Lebanon; Hassan Hassan Nasser, 36, of Windsor, Ontario; Ali Ahmad Hammoud, 64, of Lebanon; Karim Hassan Abbas, 37, formerly of Dearborn; Hassan Mohamad Srour, 30, of Montreal, Quebec; Naji Hassan Alawie, 44, of Windsor, Ontario; and Abdel-Hamid Sinno, 52, of Montreal, Quebec.

The Indictment alleges that Imad Hammoud, along with his partner, Hassan Makki, ran a multi-million dollar a year contraband cigarette trafficking organization headquartered in the Dearborn, Michigan, area between 1996 and 2002.

Makki pleaded guilty in 2003 in federal district court in Detroit to racketeering and providing material support to Hizballah. Some of the cigarettes were supplied to the organization by Mohamad Hammoud, who was convicted in 2002 in federal district court in Charlotte, North Carolina, of, among other crimes, racketeering and providing material support to Hizballah.

Makki and Mohamad Hammoud, who were not charged in the indictment unsealed today, were identified as unindicted co-conspirators. They both are currently serving prison sentences relating to their activities in this matter.

The Indictment further charges that the group would obtain low-taxed or untaxed cigarettes in North Carolina and the Cattaraugus Indian Reservation in New York and bring them into Michigan and the State of New York for the purpose of evading tens of millions in state cigarette taxes.

The enterprise obtained large profits by reselling the cigarettes at market prices in Michigan and New York. The enterprise sometimes used counterfeit tax stamps to make it appear that the state taxes had been paid.

According to the Indictment, portions of the profits made from the illegal enterprise were given to Hizballah. Some members of the enterprise charged a "Resistance Tax," being a set amount over black market price per carton of contraband cigarettes, which their customers were told would be going to Hizballah.

Some members of the enterprise also solicited money from cigarette customers for the orphans of martyrs program run by Hizballah in Southern Lebanon to support the families of persons killed in Hizballah suicide and other terrorist operations.

In announcing the guilty pleas, United States Attorney Stephen J. Murphy commended the work of the FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Special Agents of the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Internal Revenue Service, the Food and Drug Administration, Michigan State Police and the Dearborn Police Department.

The case is assigned to Assistant U.S. Attorneys Kenneth R. Chadwell and Barbara L. McQuade.
