The thing I'm having the really impossible time trying to picture is how FDR or Ike might have tried to fight WW-II while buying oil from Adolf Hitler for 75 dollars a barrel.

They had this little thing called "gas rationing". They had all kinds of rationing programs. Every American pulled his weight and every American sacrificed for the cause.

Does anyone have the political will to call upon today's Americans to make sacrifices for their country? I don't think so. If this is WWIII, then we just may lose this war. At least 30% of America is clearly on the other side of this war. And 90% of the World is on the other side. Can we win against those numbers? Are we as a nation prepared to make the sacrifices needed to prevail? I don't think so. We're still strip searching 90 year old grandmothers with walkers at airports because we don't have the political will to do racial or ethnic profiling.

We're NOT in WORLD War 3, at least not yet. We're in partial Middle East War 3....and holding.

I agree. And let's not forget, the economies of the Islamic countries are totally hollow. They could support a real war for a few months, at most.

I saw that, actually. The reason for posting the member poll had more to do with others mentioned in it.

Good idea.

I also think the video's of 9/11 should be shown every week on all the major news broadcasts. We should be reminded every week or day and never forget.

This Presidential race is going to be rerve racking if we keep picking people who have so much baggage in their past. If the dems pick some squeeky clean person who has been in a long term marriage with our Republicans who have divorce, I just don't know how that is going to play out. I had no idea that Allen divorced his first wife. What is that about? That is very disappointing. What is up with the Republican party. I thought that they were the part of family values. This is just astonishing and we are cheering for Guiliani, McCain, Gingridge, and Limbaugh? This is so surprising for a conservative website.

- If it really is WW III, why are we only spending 2.3% of our GNP on defense, when in WW II it was 37%?

- If it really is WW III, why is there not a draft?

- If it really is WW III, why is the Air Force being forced to cut 62,000 personnel to pay for new weapons systems?

- If it really is WW III, why do we not attack our enemies (Syria and Iran) and pretend they are not at war with us?

We can say it is "WW III" all we like. This nation still treats this as a small contingency.

The small percentage of the American people who have been in uniform have been paying an immense price serving since
9-11 in Iraq, Afghanistan, not to mention Korea and a thousands other places.

WW II didn't even last as long as the "Global War on Terror" has since 9-11.

The vast, vast American people are not sacrificing anything as they did during WW II.
They want for nothing, there are no shortages, they are not asked to serve.

Sorry for being cynical, but after 21 years I finally retired from the military - as I did I saw us chewing up our young soldiers and spitting them out.

If it really is WW III, we are fighting it with both arms tied behind our backs.

Technology is important and necessary, but it isn't everything. Right now we are hamstrung because we have a sizable proportion of our troops in Iraq and can't credibly take action elsewhere. That wouldn't be a problem if we had a force the size we had in the Cold War--or bigger.

My approach would be to tell the jerkoffs in Ca and Flori-duh that if they refuse to allow drilling offshore, they will be LAST IN LINE for gasoline; every othere state will get fuel and then, if there is any left over, the losers in those two states might get some.

His point, if I may be so bold as to attempt to speak for him, is that Carter showed grotesque weakness in the face of the first wave of Islamic extremism and allowed the "spawn of Satan" to grown unchecked.
I understand his point and agree with it. But that doesn't get us anywhere (except in terms of understanding history). What's important now is not making the same kinds of mistakes. W just made the same kind of mistake. Granting super-rights to terrorists and granting UN authority over US soldiers. In the long run, this could be more damaging than what Carter did. Which is especially painful, given the fact that W is one of the good guys. The best of the good guys, back a few years, but definitely on the skids recently. Trying to placate all the liberals in America.

There's nothing more pathetic, and nothing more futile, than an true American Patriot (which W is) trying to placate the hordes of traitors in the US media. Sad. Bogus and sad.

Gee, my head is in the sand and I don't know there's a war going on.

In fact, I learned just yesterday that John Kerry served in Viet Nam.

Thanks for letting me know all this. Much appreciated.

Gingrich says it's World War III

Gingrich is absolutely right. WW III started on 9/11/2001.

I don't argue that this battle could aptly be dubbed WWIV -- tho' in truth it really started waaaaaaaaaaay before I and II and III. That said however, my comment was directed at Newt's. He says Bush "should say", I'm just saying that "he has". (And, yes, I agree that this phase began with Sirhan Sirhan.)
