What Are They Thinking?...(Hamas and Hezbollah will lose this war — and maybe any chance at peace)

What must Hamas leaders have been thinking? Last month they sent guerrillas through a secret tunnel from Gaza into Israel where they launched an attack, killing two Israeli soldiers and kidnapping a third, 19-year-old Cpl. Gilad Shalit. Since no civilians were targeted, this was not an act of terrorism. It was an act of war. Perhaps they had come to believe their own spin, their boast that it was “armed resistance” that had caused then–prime minister Ariel Sharon to withdraw Israeli soldiers and settlers from Gaza. Maybe they believed that more violence would lead to more Israeli concessions — especially now that Israel is led by a center-left coalition, the hard-line Likud party having split and then collapsed over the wisdom of the Gaza withdrawal.

So far, at least, Israel’s new prime minister, Ehud Olmert, has proven Hamas wrong. He has responded to Hamas’s military attack with a military counterattack. He returned Israeli forces to Gaza, ordering them to search for Shalit, and also to stop the missiles — hundreds of them — that have rained down on Israeli cities and towns virtually every day since the Israelis left Gaza.

But islam will persevere (at least that's what they hope). What the western mind sees as a war, they see as nothing but a skirmish in a larger war. Thus it has been for 1400 years. And it's been working for them. So far.

That's questionable. 1400 years ago, Islam was at the height of its' civilization, at a time when Europeans were living in huts.

We have evolved. Islam has devolved. I don't think that's a sign that what they're doing is working. And the fact that the rest of the world is finally taking off the blinders about these maniacal genocidists and their insane plan to take over the world may be the beginning of the end for them.

Let's hope.

The author kind of gets it, but isn't seeing the overall picture.

Israel's enemies have time and numbers on their side.

They have been working at isolating Israel politically, and have had a great deal of success.

They do not have to win battles with Israel. All they need to do is keep Israel politically limited to what their pawns are calling proportional responses.

What they are really saying is that Israel must allow their enemies to slowly whittle down their numbers.

A war of "proportional" responses by their definition or proportional will inevitably result in the annihilation of Israel. This as been a long held and widely discussed strategy of Israel's enemies.

If they fight and lose five of their people to one Israeli, they are winning, and they know it. They also are not greatly concerned with paying that kind price for victory.

They do not place a high moral value on life, not even on the lives of Muslims.

Islam is not simply a religion, it is a form of government, it is a philosophy that has the overt goal of total world domination.

The author mentions that not only are people not allowed to convert to Islam, lands may not either. That's a serious understatement of what the fanatics that are behind radical Islam believe.

They believe that when a mosque is built in a nation, it becomes a Muslim nation. The nation then belongs to Islam.

To them the United States belongs to Islam.

Many if not most moderate or western Muslims don't understand this either. The live their lives under Christian laws that allow them to worship as they please. However, if the Muslim population ever gets high enough that they can dictate Muslim laws, those moderates will have to submit to the fundamentalist Muslim law or die.

Muslims are taught not to question what they are taught. Questioning Mohammad is forbidden. Questioning the teachings of the religious leaders is forbidden.

Those in control don't want or need most Muslims to understand the nature of their religion, they just need them to follow. Their religious teachings don't have to make sense or be consistent because they cannot be questioned.

The writer isn't that dumb, read the article.

For some reason, however, many Europeans and Americans can’t bring themselves to accept that Hamas is articulating not a negotiating posture but a religious conviction. By now, most people understand that Islamists consider it impermissible for a Muslim ever to convert to another religion — conversion brings a death sentence in Saudi Arabia and other countries where extreme variants of Islam hold sway.

What most people may not realize is that Islamists also believe it is impermissible for land to convert: Territory once conquered by Muslims, they insist, must never revert to the rule of infidels. That includes not just Israel but large parts of Europe. Also Kashmir, they demand, must be Muslim-ruled; that almost certainly was the motive behind this week’s railway bombings in India.

He didn't read the article.

< sigh > Does anyone ever bother to read an article anymore before making assumptions about the author's intelligence?

To ask the question is to answer the question.

You took the time to read the article.

Oh please, to many Nancy Boys in the American public, who elect to answer polls claiming they want all this fighting to "just go away".

And they squawk and whine when gas prices get above $2.00.

And they do, say, and feel whatever the MSM and Oprah tells them too.

It is your fellow Americans who are sniveling and weak, do not blame their representatives in gov, after all, it is they who elected them.

Can't disagree. Many, though, aren't sniveling and weak but disengaged and apathetic, more concerned with pro sports and playtime. Sports is big, big, big with our men. Same sad result from both scenarios.

They're on the order of the nuts in Iraq who attacked our Abrams tanks with machine-gun mounted pickup trucks. Anyone who believes that martyring themselves will give them access to 72 virgins is not too bright.
