From Tourists Streaming into Syria from Lebanon, post 47:

To: cinives

You all might find this damn funny, but my sorry ass is marooned in Beirut, where I have been working for the IMF. If anybody has any helpful suggestions on how I can get out of this war zone, I would be most grateful. Right now, the road to Syria is the only way out of Lebanon for anyone, including U.S. citizens, and the Israelis are bombing that road. I am NOT happy with the Israelis right now. I understand their concerns about their kidnapped soldiers but bombing the Beirut Airport was not going to help them in any way.

"Hey Reb, fill the bathtub with water. And any other containers you might have. "

good suggestion. you may be stuck there for a few days.

the one i was stuckk in lasted three days. for some reason they stopped shooting/mortaring at night, then in the orning it was OK from sunrise to about 9am.

if they do that in beruit, try to buy some provisions, although they may be costly.

Dear Alouette,

My prayers go up for the safety of your precious daughter and your dear grandchildren. May the Lord surround them with a hedge of protection wherever they go.

Good luck rebel_yell2, I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Don't make any rash moves and I am sure that you realize being an American, over there, at this time could be a little hazardous.

Stay safe.

No offense but I don't think the Israelis care about your discomfort.

I didn't say that and it is rebel_yell2 who is trapped, not me. Try again.

You'd need to go through Syria to get to Turkey anyway. Lebanon borders only Syria and Israel, with the Mediterranean Sea to the west.

Short of hunkering down, I think the best bet would be to try to get to Amman via Damascus, if you can't be guaranteed a flight out of Damascus. I wouldn't want to get stranded in Damascus.

Yes, it was an important strategic move. This had nothing to do with the Lebanese army's capabilities.

I agree. That's no doubt what they were thinking.

This is a long shot, but is there anyway you could rent a car and go north all the way to Turkey? I know that's a long way, but there's a good chance it would get you the hell outta there (if Syria let you through.)

If things get really tough I'm sure the Navy will airlift the Americans out, so stay in touch with people in the know.

I've been in similar situations and I feel your pain, but don't blame the Israelis. Lebanon basically attacked them out of the blue.

Not really. The Lebanese army doesn't operate any fixed wing aircraft. They don't need runways for helicopters.

It's not about the Labanese army, rather preventing the resupply of Hizbollah as well as preventing the bad guys from leaving. Israel's two prisoners from being taken out of country as well. The ports are blockaded and the road to Syria under attack for the same reason.

Reb, I know you're joking about stringing for Fox News, but you'd be a great resource for the Free Republic News Service (if there was one). We ought to see if we can get the News Channels using FR for show prep!

Stay safe, Reb. We're praying for you.

Be safe, rebel, and please know that there are lots of FReepers pulling for you.

You've got a front row seat for the opening of the REAL WWIII.
Bet you wish it was just the Super Bowl! Take care.

Please note it is rebel_yell2 who is in Lebanon and not me. Also, I understand humor is a good tension-breaker and use it myself a lot. But snide comments when one of ours is in harm's way is a whole different kettle of fish and frankly, is indefensible. Let's show our good side here, people.

The Lebanese army doesn't operate any fixed wing aircraft.

That's not the concern. The concern is hijacked commercial aircraft being used to smuggle kidnapped soldiers into Syrian airspace.

Stay safe....

Whether their military has an air force or not plenty of supplies and ammunition can be flown in on those same runways via "commercial" planes.
