From Tourists Streaming into Syria from Lebanon, post 47:

To: cinives

You all might find this damn funny, but my sorry ass is marooned in Beirut, where I have been working for the IMF. If anybody has any helpful suggestions on how I can get out of this war zone, I would be most grateful. Right now, the road to Syria is the only way out of Lebanon for anyone, including U.S. citizens, and the Israelis are bombing that road. I am NOT happy with the Israelis right now. I understand their concerns about their kidnapped soldiers but bombing the Beirut Airport was not going to help them in any way.

1. Get all the food and water you can.
2. Keep your US passport close and out of sight. If anybody local asks, you're Canadian..Hell, if it gets hairy, make for their embassy in Beirut.
3. Stay by the radio. I assume you have a transistor radio. If not, get one. Preferably shortwave.
4. Put mattresses over the windows in case they get blown out, better yet, find a place w/o windows.
6. Be careful with your internet use...Internet, especially over a landline can be traced. If it's wireless, keep it short and move if it looks like the locals are taking an undue interest.

...the Beirut Airport was not going to help them in any way.

So you think they did it just for the hell of it? I suspect Israel's Generals know a helluva lot more than you do about what is and what isn't going to help them strategically. Got some anger? Direct it toward the regional Islamist infestation and their enablers.

If any of you have any suggestions on things to keep with you in a situation like this, or how to get out of a situation like this, I imagine they'd be appreciated.

Depends on what he has available. I would be searching the hotel right now.

I don't know the extent of the situation, but I would stock whatever I could and have an emergency pack ready to go.

I imagine that the hotel has plenty of things to stock up on.

Better to be prepared and not need it, than the other way around!

I don´t know if you have practised it before, but make sure that you ALWAYS when leaving the hotel drive with reliable friends or use CHRISTIAN taxis. NEVER USE A TAXI THAT IS DRIVEN BY A MUSLIM, YOU NEVER KNOW!! Ask the concierge for reliable Christian taxis.

To FReepers who´re wondering: In Lebanon it´s quite usual for Christians to use Christian-only-taxis. It´s a security matter.

I think Israel bombed the road to Damascus. I hope our freeper stays safe or gets out asap.

Please, this is not (yet) a war in Lebanon. We use to call that limited military operations, and the targets are not civilians. The Lebanese are not preparing for an evacuation, they´re not going to be bombed out. Tanks are not expected to roll through Beirut.

The best suggestion is to do what the locals do, and have the luggage packed, being ready to go. Flashlights are useful, and batteries. There´s enough food, etc in the hotels available. Our fellow FReeper will be home within the next 4 days I think.

Looking at that map and based on my fear that this could go nuclear, I'd be making my way to the northwest coast and be trying to hire a boat to take me to Cyprus.

I sure hope you are correct!

The power has gone out three times during the last four hours. But, then again, it keeps coming back on.

Maxy Waxy reporting for duty.

What is the latest update? Is rebel_yell2 still at his hotel? GOOD! This is probably the safest place to be. Israel will not bomb a hotel. To be safe (from Hizbullah) DO NOT publicly reveal the name of your hotel or your exact location. How are you on food and water? Is the hotel still "operating"?
