Posted on 07/01/2006 1:15:53 PM PDT by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Bin Laden Says Will Take Fight to America
(Full Story)

Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden said his group reserved the right to fight the United States on its land and warned Washington and the world community against sending forces to Somalia, according to an Internet audio tape.

"We will fight its (U.S.) soldiers on the land of Somalia ... and we reserve the right to punish it on its land and anywhere possible," said the speaker, who sounded like the Saudi-born militant.

"We warn all of the countries in the world not to respond to America by sending international troops to Somalia," he said of the African nation where Islamists' power is rising.

Israel: New Hezbollah rockets can reach Tel Aviv and Be'er Sheva
Haaretz ^ | 07/15/2006 | Haaretz Staff

Posted on 07/15/2006 12:27:13 PM PDT by gotribe

Israel believes Hezbollah has missiles that can hit most of Israel, and which could even strike Be'er Sheva under optimum conditions.

Iran supplied Hezbollah with solid-fuel, Zelzal-2 missiles with a 200-km range, but these are not very accurate, since they do not have a self-guidance system.

The Zelzal-2 missiles, intended to strike broad targets such as communities and cities, are equipped with explosive warheads weighing up to 600 kilograms. The missiles are a later version of the Zelzal-1 missiles, which Iran first displayed in September 2005 at a military parade in Tehran, together with six Shihab-3 missiles....

Current observtions on curent ME conflict

A lot of sources are down because of Sabboth, should be coming back up witihn the next few hours.

Arab League fails to come to a decision. This is UNREAL, these folk normally condem Israel when they sneeze! This is BAD news for Syria who is likely to get hammered the worst. Iran has made the other Arab leaders nervious. Remember Iran is PERSIAN, not ARAB, so a wild man at Iran's helm is even less likely to garner support from the league. This is doubly so for Hizbollah as no serious support for its kidnapping of the Israeli soldiers could be found.

Syira given 72 notice. I don't necessarly believe that Israel will target Syrian facilities unless they become very active and join he fighting, but more likely is making it very clear that when they move into Lebanon to clean up Hizbollah, they will carry their fight with them over the border into Syria if need be and for them to keep out of the way. This means that probably now within the next 60 hours the ground assault will begin in earnest.

Syria talks tough but quickly indicates Israel didn't strike its territory. Earlier today initial news reports claimed Israel had struck Syrian positions within Syria. Both the IAF and Syria quickly denied that, and both confirmed that positions were struck within Lebanon, NOT Syria. This quick clairification by Syria indicates that they are very gunshy of dealing with Israel. Their rear end in flapping in the wind and they know it, especially when they don't receive support from the Arab League.

It appears pretty well confirmed that a mobile C-802 guided missile was used to hit the Israeli Corvette yesterday. Though called a "silkworm" it is nothing like the Silkworm system, but is a more modern anti-ship missile. Freeper Jeff head evaluated the attack by suggesting that the Corvette was caught off guard because it was close to shore providing cover for other gun boats shelling the airport and other targets. This would have dramatically reduced the normal reaction time as this Corvette was designed for this kind of attack. It additionally appears that intel might have missed the deployment of this system to Lebanon, a double suprise. More likely than not, Iranian military were there to see to the successful use of the weapon.

Rocket attack on Tiber - This city is a soft target, thought by many to be out of range of rocket attacks, which would have been true in the past except for the fact that Hisbollah has longer range rockets at their disposal. this was a terror attack, plain and simple. Other rocket attacks have have much more degraded effects, likely because Israel is denying them their presurveyed sites and they are having to range the targets through trail and failure.

IAF continues to shape the battlefield. There is no opposiition in the skies.

Finally, Patriot missiles have reported been emplaced in Haifa. I'm not sure how good they would be against the Raal rockets but they are better than nothing. Israel also has an ABM system called the Arrow which is most likely deployed to protect Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.

A note regarding Arab on Arab violence
It is worth noting that 20% of the population of Israel is Arab, not Jewish, and most of the Arabs live in the northern part of the country where Hizballah is launching barrage after barrage of katyusha rockets. So, if the names of the targets being hit by Hizballah sound Arab, that's because they are.

Katyusha rockets hit villages in western Galilee:

Three barrages of Katyusha rockets landed near the villages of Horfaish and Beit Jan in the western Galilee.
'Katyusha' is a Russian word, btw.

Putin suspects an evil Jewish plot
Nothing escapes his keen KGB trained mind...

Putin has impression Israel pursuing wider goals than return of abducted soldiers:

President Vladimir Putin said Saturday that he thinks Israel is pursuing wider goals in its military campaign than the return of abducted soldiers.
No sh*t, Vlad. The soldiers were abducted because Hizballah, supported by Iran and Syria, is allowed to operate freely in south Lebanon by a Lebanese government unwilling to exercise sovereignty over its own territory. The abduction of the soldiers is a symptom of a larger problem.

Could it be the Russian's assessment of events is colored by the fact that Iran and Syria buy large quantities of Russian arms and technology?

Suffice it to say Russia is not an impartial observer of recent events.

Meanwhile...

Katyusha rockets land near Carmiel

Katyusha rockets land in Kiryat Shmona

Olmert's associates: No ceasefire until abducted soldiers returned:

Officials at the Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's office responded to the ceasefire request by Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Siniora and said that dismantling the Hizbullah and deploying the Lebanese army along the Israeli-Lebanese border are some of the objectives of the IDF operation. They also said that "There won't be ceasefire until the two abducted soldiers are returned."
Mr. Putin is invited to call Mr. Olmert's bluff and arrange for the return of our boys. Trust me, we'll agree to a cease fire (and when Hizballah violates it, we'll respond accordingly).

In the meantime, the next round of targets has been approved...

Olmert, Peretz approve further operations in Lebanon:

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Defense Minister Amir Peretz concluded a meeting and decided on further IDF operations against targets in Lebanon. Israel hasn't responded yet to Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Siniora's demand for a ceasefire.
And to repeat the warning to the Lebanese army:

IDF warns Lebanon not to fire at army:

A day after the Lebanese army fired at an Israeli aircraft on Friday, the IDF sent a severe warning to the Lebanese army.
The warning stated that Israel had thus far refrained from firing at Lebanese army positions, but should the Lebanese army continue firing at the IDF, the situation would change.

Saniora still doesn't get it
Lebanese PM calls for immediate cease-fire:

Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Saniora called on Saturday for an immediate cease-fire brokered by the United Nations, to end Israel's land, sea and air offensive against Lebanon.
The problem isn't Israel's offensive against Lebanon. The problem is Hizballah and Lebanon's refusal to disarm Hizballah and to exercise sovereignty over Lebanon.

I didn't know 'Zapatero' was Spanish for 'Idiot'
You learn something new every day...

Spanish PM: Mideast fighting to fuel radical Islam:

Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said Saturday that Israel's offensive against Lebanon could fuel radical Islam, as he said the war in Iraq had done.
Zapatero said the war in Iraq had led to "radicalization, fanaticism, conflict and instability" in the region and he urged Israel to end hostilities and respect international law.

"Those who promoted the war in Iraq told us that after the intervention a horizon of peace would open up," Zapatero told supporters at a Socialist rally in Ibiza in the Balearic Islands.

"I hope the lesson given by these facts will make them think things over," he said, referring to Israel.

Zapatero on Friday said Israel was wrong in attacking Lebanon and he called on the United Nations and European Union to "actively intervene" to stop the fighting.

Really, it's a wonderful neighborhood. You'll love the time you spend here. Don't forget to pack lots of body bags.

Too bad for Lebanon
They refused to act against Hizballah and now they blaim Israel for the consequences.

Lebanese PM: Israel is ruining our country:

Lebanese Prime Minster Fuad Siniora demanded that Israel stop attacking his country.
"Israel is ruining Lebanon and turned it into a disaster zone," he said. PM Siniora intends on asking the United Nations for aid.

Israel responds to "world opinion": talk to the hand.

Security officials: No loosening the grip from Hizbullah:

Security officials close to Defense Minister Amir Peretz said following the world-wide calls for Israel to cease its fire that "Israel has no intention of loosening the grip from Hizbullah."
Peretz may designate northern Israel as "A special state":

Defense Minister Amir Peretz may declare the region of northern Israel as "A special state", following the repeated Katyusha rockets attacks.
If the north is declared being in "a special state", security officials will be able to prevent schools from opening and operate essential institutions. The government will be discussing the issue on Sunday.

Spitting in the wind
EU calls for restraint on all sides in Middle East:

The European Union called on Saturday for all sides in the worsening violence in the Middle East to try to stop the violence.
"All parties must show restraint in order to avoid further escalation," Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen, who holds the EU's rotating presidency, said at a G8 summit in St. Petersburg.

He added that Israel's use of force against Lebanon in recent days had been disproportionate.

The European Union is irrelevant.

Circle of accountability
As the scope of Hizballah's war against Israel broadens, the circle of countries to be held to account for Hizballah's actions grows bigger. Currently the circle encompasses all of Lebanon.

The next circle will enclose Damascus, and after that?

Tehran.

Five Katyusha rockets strike Tiberias:

For the first time since the 1973 Yom Kippur War, the city of Tiberias, located some 35 kilometers south of the Lebanese border on the western bank of the Sea of Galilee, came under a rocket attack on Saturday. Tiberias is located outside the area that the IDF predicted would be hit by Katyushas.
Three of the six Katyusha rockets fired at the city by Hizbullah landed in residential areas, with one landing near the Club Hotel resort, and one landing 15-20 meters away a gas station.

At least one person was suffering from shock and evacuated to Poriya Hospital, while residents were told to enter shelters and fortified rooms. Local police were patrolling the vacation spot's beaches and promenades on Saturday afternoon, urging bathers to heed the Home Front Command's instructions and remain inside fortified rooms.

Moshav Kfar Hitim, near Tiberias, along with Migdal, Evron, and Abu Snan in the western Galilee were also hit.

Hizballah can hit Tel Aviv and Jersusalem:

After the attack on Tiberias, IDF officials warned that Hizbullah has missiles that could reach as far as 100-200 kilometers into the country, putting cities such as Jerusalem and Tel Aviv at risk if the weapons are used.
A senior Israeli intelligence official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the information, said that Hizbullah has 150 missiles that could reach a distance of 45 kilometers, and another 20 with a range of 100-200 kilometers.

"They may hit Tel Aviv," the official said, adding that intelligence officials were not sure why Hizbullah has not used the missiles since it started firing rockets at Israel on Wednesday.

Yes, they may hit Tel Aviv or Jerusalem.

And Israel may hit Damascus or Tehran (or Qom, or Isfahan).

Russia: Hizbullah must cease attacking neighboring countries:

Russia’s defense Minister Segei Ivanov called on Hizbullah to stop using “terrorist methods.”
“We call on Hizbullah to cease using terrorist methods, including attacks on neighboring countries,” he stated.

Nice of the Russians to notice that there is a problem, and that it's not Israel. In point of fact, Russia bears a lot of responsibility for having sold weapons and transferred weapon technologies to Syria and Iran. The same can be said for China.

Meanwhile, Hizballah is falling back on conspiracy theories to try and cover-up their own errors:

In an interview with the Iranian news channel al-Alam, al-Din harshly criticized the Arab countries that were unsupportive of Hizbullah, and said: “There is an Arab and international conspiracy to eliminate the resistance, but we enjoy a strong popular support. We are able to teach the enemy a lesson it will never forget.”
Report: Hizbullah rocket fire misses target, strikes civilian ship:

A Hizbullah rocket barrage aimed at Israeli warships missed their target and struck a civilian merchant ship in the Mediterranean Sea, Israeli military officials said early Saturday.
The officials did not know the nationality of the ship, or whether there were casualties. The officials could not be identified under military regulations. The rocket attack occurred late Friday at the same time Hizbullah struck an Israeli warship, causing heavy damage to the vessel.

The fingerprints of Iranian involvement:

A missile fired by Hezbollah, not an unmanned drone laden with explosives, damaged an Israeli warship off Lebanon, the army said Saturday. Iranian troops helped fire the missile, a senior intelligence official said.
One sailor was killed and three were missing.

The intelligence official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the information, said about 100 Iranian soldiers are in Lebanon and helped fire the Iranian-made, radar-guided C-102 at the ship late Friday.

The attack alarmed Israel because initial information indicated the guerrillas had used a drone for the first time to attack Israeli forces.

But the army's investigation showed that Hezbollah had fired an Iranian-made missile at the vessel from the shores of Lebanon, said Brig. Gen. Ido Nehushtan.

"We can confirm that it was hit by an Iranian-made missile launched by Hezbollah. We see this as very profound fingerprint of Iranian involvement in Hezbollah," Nehushtan said in an interview with The Associated Press.

Another Hezbollah missile also hit and sank a nearby merchant ship at around the same time, Nehushtan said. He said that ship apparently was Egyptian, but had no other information.

Hitting back:

Hizbullah leaders leaving Beirut:

Hizbullah leaders and operatives were leaving Beirut on Saturday following a massive IAF strike on an 11-story building that served as the organization's command center, initial intelligence revealed.
Channel 2 reported that the move appeared to be made under heavy security.

Hizbullah building totally destroyed:

Lebanese officials reported that the Israeli Air Force has completely destroyed a nine-story building in which the offices of Hassan Nasrallah, Hizbullah’s head, were located.
The building is located in the Dakhya neighborhood in southern Beirut.

IDF struck Lebanon-Syria border crossing:

IDF jets attacked the al-Masnaa border crossing between Syria and Lebanon. The al-Jazeera news channel reported.
IDF attacks Tripoli in northern Lebanon:

Lebanon police reported that the Israeli Air Force attacked targets in the northern city of Tripoli, located some 90 kilometers (55 miles) from the capital Beirut.
Israel hits Lebanon bridges, gas stations:

Israeli warplanes renewed attacks on Lebanon early Saturday, targeting bridges and fuel storage tanks and gas stations in the east and south, security officials said.
Hezbollah's Al Manar television station said at least three people were killed in an Israeli airstrike in Hermel, in the eastern Bekaa Valley. But security officials said six members of a family were injured when a rocket hit their house in Hermel.

Israeli fighter jets destroyed two bridges in eastern Lebanon, Lebanese officials said, declining to be named because they are not authorized to talk to the media.

The jets pounded a mountainous area near the border with

Syria where radio and satellite TV antennas are located, they said.

Another strike targeted three bridges south of Beirut early Saturday, officials said.

Israeli jets also destroyed another bridge in the southern market town of Nabatiyeh, the officials said.

Jets also hit six gas stations and fuel tanks were also set ablaze in attacks along the coastal highway linking Beirut to the south of the country.

The Arab Al-Jazeera satellite TV channel also reported that Hezbollah's guerrillas had fired dozens of rockets at the Israeli town of Nahariya by the early hours of the morning.

In southern Lebanon, Israeli troops warned residents of the Lebanese border village of Marwaheen to evacuate in two hours or else the village would be destroyed, security officials said. No reason was given for the Israeli ultimatum.

Note to Bashar Assad: Time is running out.

Israel gives Syria ultimatum:

The London-based Arabic language newspaper Al-Hayat reported Saturday that “Washington has information according to which Israel gave Damascus 72 hours to stop Hizbullah’s activity along the Lebanon-Israel border and bring about the release the two kidnapped IDF soldiers or it would launch an offensive with disastrous consequences.”
The report said “a senior Pentagon source warned that should the Arab world and international community fail in the efforts to convince Syria to pressure Hizbullah into releasing the soldiers and halt the current escalation Israel may attack targets in the country.”

Al-Hayat quoted the source as saying that “the US cannot rule out the possibility of an Israeli strike in Syria,” this despite the fact that the Bush administration has asked Israel to “refrain from any military activity that may result in civilian casualties.”

Crude oil could go to $100 +

Snip: Analysts believe crude prices could easily climb into the triple digits if the fighting escalates to include Israel and Iran -- an entirely possible scenario that would make the record-high gasoline costs of late last summer look dirt-cheap by comparison.

"If the Iranians get dragged into it, it could go to $100-plus," said Peter Tertzakian, chief energy economist with ARC Financial Corp. in Calgary.

"Iran produces five per cent of the word's oil supply, but more importantly, if the missiles start flying, they fly over the jugular vein of the world's oil supply, the Strait of Hormuz. That's the key."

Man Loses Job, Put On Terror List After Airport Incident

HOUSTON -- A Jordanian man says his life has been thrown into turmoil since he was briefly detained at Hobby Airport last month, an incident that prompted airport security officials to re-evaluate their system.

Mohamed Ahwar Bataineh, 31, was flying to Atlanta for a truck-driving job on June 26 when airport screeners stopped him at the security checkpoint.

A Transportation Security Agency report, obtained by the Houston Chronicle, said Bataineh shook his head when screeners asked if he had a laptop computer in his baggage. But an X-ray machine detected a laptop and screeners also found an alarm clock with a battery taped to it. They also said Bataineh was wearing shoes they suspected had been "gutted out."

But instead of alerting the FBI, the screeners called a Houston police officer to investigate Bataineh. Officer J.O. Reece examined Bataineh's shoes, then put the battery in the clock and found that it functioned properly, said Reece's attorney, Chad Hoffman.

Reece found no reason to detain Bataineh and he was allowed to enter the boarding area, over protests from the screeners, according to the TSA report.

Officials said the FBI has the primary responsibility for responding to suspected terrorist activities at airports, with agents stationed on site and a special squad positioned to respond immediately. But the TSA only notified the FBI two days after the incident involving Bataineh, FBI spokeswoman Shauna Dunlap said.

Since the incident, Bataineh said he's lost his job and been connected to terrorism unfairly.

Another TSA report obtained by the Chronicle states that, because of the incident, Bataineh was at least temporarily put on a list of terrorists, partly because he has "a direct relationship with a person of interest" on that list. (*cough - cough* snip - more at link)

""Highly" secret documents stolen from Nigeria's anti-graft agency: official
Sat Jul 15, 12:14 PM ET
ABUJA (AFP) - Documents described as "highly classified" relating to "a very sensitive matter" have been stolen from an operational office of Nigeria's anti-graft agency."

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The EFCC statement, however, said that the burglary would not "negatively affect" the pace of the ongoing investigation as it had all original copies of the stolen documents in a secured location.

The burglary is coming less than three weeks after EFCC chief Nuhu Ribadu said that a "certain faceless group" in the volatile Niger Delta planned to attack him."

Awesome Post, Vel.
Let us count the ways.
1. Lying, to screeners, about the laptop.
2. Alarm clock(operable) with batteries taped to it.
3. "gutted out" shoes.

The real question for me is "Resolved, Officer Reece is dumber than bellybutton lint.)

Houston PD should raise their wages and get better, non-special status employees.

Thanks, TWB.
I like the part about him being friends with someone who is on the terrorist watch list.
