Bin Laden Says Will Take Fight to America
(Full Story)

Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden said his group reserved the right to fight the United States on its land and warned Washington and the world community against sending forces to Somalia, according to an Internet audio tape.

"We will fight its (U.S.) soldiers on the land of Somalia ... and we reserve the right to punish it on its land and anywhere possible," said the speaker, who sounded like the Saudi-born militant.

"We warn all of the countries in the world not to respond to America by sending international troops to Somalia," he said of the African nation where Islamists' power is rising.

Mine, too. Especially when he went down as fast as he did. Good reflexes.

Too much news today to keep up with everything. Now I hear that it was Iranian guards that fired the missiles on Haifa. That will surely stir the pot.

Coalition Helicopter Crashes in Iraq; Terrorists Killed, Captured

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, July 13, 2006 – A Multinational Division Baghdad AH-64D Apache Longbow helicopter crashed southwest of Baghdad today, U.S. military officials reported.
The two pilots survived and were transported to a Camp Taji medical facility. The aircraft was conducting a combat air patrol. The cause of the incident is unknown, officials said. A MNDB quick reaction force and a downed aircraft recovery team secured the area. Additional information is being withheld pending investigation.

In other new from Iraq, Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers detained five suspected terrorists and discovered two caches containing bomb-making materials yesterday in Baghdad. Three of the suspects are believed to be foreign fighters, officials said.

Soldiers from 1st Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, uncovered 130 mm mortars, 57 mm anti-aircraft rounds, 20 and 30 mm anti-aircraft rounds, as well as several other bomb-making materials.

Also, coalition forces killed a terrorist and detained seven others following a small-arms firefight outside the Al Abbas Mosque in central Baghdad July 11.

Following the firefight, the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division soldiers and Iraqi policemen from 6th Brigade, 2nd National Police Division, cordoned off the mosque and questioned the imam about the gunmen.

The Iraqi commander of responded to the scene and spoke to the imam. Following their conversation, the imam agreed to cooperate with the U.S. soldiers and turned over rifles, machine guns, a rocket-propelled grenade, and the body of the dead terrorist. The soldiers also found rifles and machine guns in a vehicle used by the terrorists. No coalition or Iraqi security forces were killed or injured in the incident.

In a separate incident, Iraqi and coalitions forces detained nine terrorists in Baghdad on July 11. Iraqi soldiers from 1st Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army Division, Iraqi policemen, and U.S. soldiers from Multinational Division Baghdad's 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, captured the terrorists, who are believed to have been preparing for an attack in the western Baghdad neighborhood of Ameriya, officials said.

After receiving a report from an Iraqi army commander that men with mortars were seen near the Maluki Mosque, soldiers from 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, were informed that Iraqi police were attacked by small-arms fire as they came upon the terrorists while on patrol. Four police officers were killed and eight were wounded. Two police trucks and a civilian truck were also burned in the firefight, U.S. officials said.

Later, a firefight began in an area several blocks north as 8th Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, soldiers pursued eight terrorists. One terrorist was killed as soldiers returned his fire. The soldiers from followed two more terrorists to another building located several blocks east, where the soldiers discovered six more terrorists. A cordon was set around the area, and Iraqi soldiers and police and U.S. soldiers searched the building.

The soldiers found a wounded terrorist and eight others attempting to provide aid. A U.S. Army medic provided first aid to the wounded man before he was detained for questioning. Iraqi authorities took the wounded man and the eight others into custody.

Also on July 11, an Iraqi civilian was rescued from his kidnappers by soldiers of 9th Iraqi Army Division, and Multi-National Division Baghdad's 7th Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, during an unplanned cordon-and-search operation in Masara village, in the northwestern area of Baghdad.

The kidnappers were captured during the operation and are in custody. No injuries or damage to MNDB personnel or equipment were reported.

In addition, Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers recovered a makeshift bomb south of Baghdad on July 10. The soldiers observed two suspicious men digging on the side of the road and sent a quick reaction force to the location. Before they arrived, MNDB soldiers observed the suspicious individuals enter a van and speed off. When the soldiers, from 1st Battalion, 67th Armor Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, arrived on the scene where the van was initially spotted, they found makeshift bomb-making materials.

Later that day the van was spotted by coalition helicopters patrolling the area. The soldiers responded and cordoned off the area. An explosive ordnance disposal team was called to the area to conduct a controlled detonation to destroy the van. No injuries or damage to MNDB personnel or equipment were reported.

Hizbullah fires first Iran missile into Israel

For the first time, Hizbullah has test-fired an Iranian medium-range rocket near the Lebanese border into Israel.

Lebanese sources said Hizbullah tested the Fajr-3 rocket on Aug. 25. The sources said three Fajr-3s were launched about six kilometers north of the Israeli-Lebanese border.

This was the first time Hizbullah fired a Fajr-3 rocket from Lebanon.

The sources said Hizbullah was provided with the Fajr-3 in 2001, but the rocket remained under the supervision of Iranian military personnel.

From Time Magazine 2 weeks ago:

http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1208916,00.html

Hizballah officials have publicly said that the group possesses some 13,000 rockets. Most of them are believed to be standard Katyushas, which have a 12-mile range. But, Israeli officials say Hizballah also maintains a supply of 220mm and even larger rockets from Iran, a "strategic threat" capable of hitting targets in Haifa — 20 miles inside Israel — and beyond. "They can target all of the north and go as far afield as Haifa, threatening one million inhabitants of Israel. It must be considered by Israel's leaders at all times," the Israeli military intelligence official says.

Israeli officials reportedly allege that the long-range rockets are under the direct command of officers of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, which Israel alleges has lately expanded its presence along the border. This charge, too, is denied by Hizballah, and has not been independently confirmed.

This is rapidly moving towards a major regional conflict between Israel and Syria/Iran. I'd give my eyeteeth to know where the 3-4 carrier battle groups that are 'exercising' in the Pacific are. Iran may be trying to provoke Israel to attack early, before the US carriers can get into position protect the Persian Gulf and the Straits of Hormutz.

Iran denies Hizbullah intends to move soldiers
By ASSOCIATED PRESS

The Iranian Foreign Ministry described as "nonsense" on Friday the allegation that two IDF soldiers captured by the Lebanese Hizbullah were being transferred to Iran.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi categorically denied the allegation.

"This regime (Israel) is trapped in its homemade crisis and these sort of accusations are simply nonsense," he was quoted as saying by IRNA, Iran's official news agency.

Saudis blame Hizbullah for Lebanon crisis
By JPOST.COM STAFF

Saudi Arabia indicated on Thursday that Hizbullah bore the responsibility for the current crisis in Lebanon, Israel Radio reported.

In an official statement, the Saudi government said that a distinction must be drawn between "legitimate resistance" and "adventurous, irresponsible acts" committed by groups in Lebanon who don't recognize the government and don't coordinate with other Arab nations.

The statement said that these groups must take responsibility and solve the crisis themselves.

"U.S. authorities fired on by border bandits"
July 13,2006
Andres R. Martinez
Monitor Staff Writer

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "DONNA — Bandits shot hundreds of rounds of automatic gun fire at Hidalgo County Sheriff’s deputies and Border Patrol agents Wednesday from the Mexican side of the Rio Grande.

The deputies were responding to a call from two brothers who swam across the river after an initial gunfight at a ranch in Mexico, Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Treviño said.

Treviño would not identify the two brothers, but said the two U.S. citizens are suspects in other criminal investigations."

ARTICLE SNIPPET #2: "At least three deputies and four Border Patrol agents took the two brothers back to the riverbank to see if they might find any evidence or the shooters.

Instead, shooters from Mexico fired automatic weapons at the group. The barrage went on for almost 10 minutes, alternating between shots coming from Mexico and the east.

Treviño believes that the shots from the east were most likely on American soil. The heaviest gunfire came after the shots from the east ended, most likely an attempt to divert attention and allow the shooters from the east to cross back."
