Interpol tackles dollar fraud

LYON, France, July 26, 2006 (AFP) - International police body Interpol said Wednesday it had brought together about 60 experts to discuss ways of fighting the production of fake US dollar banknotes with attention focused on fraud in North Korea.
Several sources have indicated that North Korea is at the centre of efforts to manufacture bogus US currency, Interpol said.
Discussions about methods to fight the trade took place all day and the experts decided to meet again to carry on their work together.
Since 1989, US notes of 50- and 100-dollar denominations worth nearly 50 million dollars (39.5 million euros) have been seized, mostly outside of the United States, and Interpol described the fakes as "very deceptive but detectable".
Interpol is based in Lyon, southeast France.

US officials connected with the investigation were quoted by the media as saying that there was no evidence that the accused were considering an attack within the US or had ties to al-Qaeda. And officials were careful not to describe the group as a "sleeper cell" - a term used to characterize suspected terrorist supporters in Lackawanna, NY, Seattle and elsewhere arrested last year, some of whom were connected with the Tablighi Jamaat (TJ) of Pakistan.
However, the officials charged that the men conspired to help Muslims abroad in violent jihad not only in India, but also in Chechnya, the Philippines and other countries. The men, the charge sheet said, obtained AK-47s and other high-powered weaponry and practiced small-unit military tactics in Virginia."

July 26, 2006 -- JERUSALEM - Israel claimed victory in Hezbollah's southern "capital" yesterday after a battle in Lebanon that uncovered Iranian-made weapons and electronic equipment and left 150 guerrillas dead. Israeli forces found "war rooms" equipped with Iranian surveillance and eavesdropping gear in Bint Jbail, the main Hezbollah stronghold just inside the border.
"The town is completely controlled by us," an Israeli colonel said.
Caches of weapons were also found in Bint Jbail, Israeli officials said.
Mahmoud Komati, deputy chief of Hezbollah's political arm, refused to acknowledge the group was firing Iranian-made missiles into Israel.
"We don't deny nor confirm. We believe where the weapons come from is irrelevant," he said, adding that Hezbollah has weapons made in France, Russia, China and the United States.
"Some of our fighters carry M16s. So you think we buy them from America?" he asked.
The death toll from the two-week war continued to mount, including six Lebanese killed by a bomb in Nebatiyeh and a 15-year-old Arab girl killed by a Hezbollah rocket in northern Israel. At least three U.N. observers were also killed, with one other feared dead. They were from Austria, Canada, China and Finland, U.N. and Lebanese officials said.

In this morning’s new Al Qaeda message, Dr. Ayman al Zawahiri reminds the world that the old adage “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” is alive and well.
Although it’s only been a few weeks since Zawahiri’s amir, Bin Laden, issued a message threatening Shi’ite Muslims with attacks, Zawahiri this morning vowed to “not stand by idly” while the Muslims in Lebanon and Gaza are attacked by the Israelis. Although Sunni Islam is the predominent sect in Gaza, Hizbullah (the focus of the Israeli offensive) follows the Shi'ite branch of Islam.
This morning’s video tape is a striking contrast to the normal Al Qaeda videos of Zawahiri, which for several years have featured the terror leader in front of a curtain or fabric backdrop. The tape shows Zawahiri in what appears to be a studio, in front of a backdrop with photographs of Bin Laden and the laceName w:st="on">WorldlaceName> laceName w:st="on">TradelaceName> laceType w:st="on">CenterlaceType> exploding in flames.
In the message, Al Qaeda second-in-command Ayman al Zawahiri threatens the Israelis and the west in retaliation for the war in Lebanon.
Zawahiri’s key points are:
The world is a battle field open in front of us.
This war with Israel cannot be ended by ceasefires or treaties.
This is a jihad and will continue until the religion of Allah rules the world
Everyone taking part in these attacks will pay the price
We are continuing our translation and analysis and will update again shortly.
