Gov. Mitt Romney says he would be willing to talk about his Mormon religion in broad terms should he run for president but would shy away from debating specific beliefs.
"I think initially some people would say, `Gosh, I don't know much about your faith. Tell me about it.' And I'd probably outline the fundamentals: I'm a religious person, I believe that Jesus Christ is my savior," Romney said during an appearance on PBS's "The Charlie Rose Show." "But then as you get into the details of doctrines, I'd probably say, 'Look, time out.'"
Among other things, Mormons believed in polygamy until 1890 and banned blacks from the priesthood until 1978. They also maintain temples open only to members where rites such as vicarious baptisms for the dead are performed.
Romney also reiterated on the show, which aired Monday, that he believes the question of whether to outlaw abortion should be left up to individual states. It was a nuanced view that allows him to maintain his anti-abortion views while leaving intact Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court ruling allowing abortion.

The Catholic church doesn't recognize Mormon baptism either. But I know for a fact that the Catholic church accepts Amish baptism. Go figure.
I too believe that Jesus Christ is my Savior. I'm LDS also. Ask any member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and they will say the same thing.
What has he saved you from? That is the $1,000,000 question?
My Savior has saved me from eternal separation from God because of my sin. In fact, by accepting Jesus as my Savior the law is abolished...I cannot sin in a way that would separate me from him (except the unpardonable sin)
You however are trapped not by the law of Moses, but by the even more stringent law of Joseph Smith.
Do you pay a full tithe of 10%?
Do you attend all your Church meetings?
Are you honest in ALL your dealings with your fellow man?
Do you obey the Word of Wisdom? Abstain from coffee, tea, alcohol?
Do you keep the ten commandments?
Are you morally pure?
Are you "Temple worthy?"
No need to answer...you must do all that you can do, then Jesus will save you...but how will you know you've done enough. How do you know that God does not expect you to be the wife of, say, Parley P. Pratt in the afterlife? If you are unmarried now, you can be sealed to some LDS man in the afterlife. I hope he accepts you and calls you through the veil. Otherwise The best that you can hope for is to be a handmaiden to someone in the Celestial Kingdom.
That does not sound like salvation to me...but whatever blows your skirt.
The important thing to remember is that many prophecies are conditional
Smith's aren't conditional
that the Son of Man will not come in the heavens till I am 85 years old, 48 years hence or about 1890."
J Smith didn't live to be 85 did he?
There are a number of ways this may be fulfilled. Some may tremble with joy, others with anger.
Once again this is your wishful thinking
The prophecy states, All nations
Is Nigeria, Italy, Germany or America tremebling at the presence of the Mormon church?
"May" doesn't count in phophecies according to Scripture.
How could you possibly know whether or not anyone in New York or Albany accepted the gospel?
It doesn't say "anyone" or that if only one person gets saved, it said the "cities of",
and it is currently witnessing a remarkable growth in LDS conversions.
There is a remarkable growth of believe it or not , Islam in New York City too
Famine, plague, earthquake, thunder and lightning have all come about, just as prophesied. They will increase as time goes on.
Yeah since the beginning of time but this prophecy address a certain period of time, the Civil War and plague and earthquake didn't happened within that time frame
John F. Boynton, apostle, said that he understood that the bank was established because it was the will of God (HC 2:509-510)
Was the bank the will of God?
>If the perfect word of truth, spoken by the mouth of Christ Himself
Well that's what has been quoted to you but you seem to ignore it and reply instead upon what your elders have said or the doctrine of the Mormon church
And last but not least, you NEVER answered the MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION before running off;
WHO IS JESUS CHRIST?
Romans 5:8-9; I John 1 :7-10; Psalm 130:3-4; Ephesians 2:13-16; Colossians 2:13; I Corinthians 15:3-4.
And you are right, that we are called to be a "light" by our behavior
But Scripture also commands us to "Preach the Word"
If you have something wonderful to offer, you want to share it
Do you believe that a person has eternal life thru faith in Jesus Christ? What exactly do you believe is the reason for Jesus Christ?
"Like the Father, who is an exalted and perfected man living near the planet Kolob, each spirit child must come to earth and take a physical body in order to progress toward Godhood: his pre-existent faithfulness determined what race and status he should be born into here."
Thanks, now I understand, I think.
And here I have been wisecracking about Mormon belifs when all I had to do was look to the planet Kolob for guidance.
"Thanks, now I understand, I think." Shhh, you're not supposed to understand these secret things.
This is a lame reason. Mitt should be anti abortion. So because an innocent Fetus can;t cross a State line they should die? What about Women crossing the State line to have abortions?
I like Mitt as a Business Man, Family Man, and Olympic game guru guy but he is not ultra conservative which is the only way I like my politicians. When a conservative Mormon runs I'll vote for them.
On another note interesting how the political thread turns into the old Mormon vs. Non Mormon debate about what we believe. My guess is similarly Mitt won't be able to just answer "Look time out". Nor should he IMO.
In the OT the Prophet would go through a cleansing and purification ritual before entering the Holy of Holies once a year to commune with God. We consider the Temple ordinances Holy in the same way.
The temple is open to all.... You just have to convert and wait a year then you can know all the secrets you want. ;-) (humor)
I am sorry that your Aunt dissapeared and didn't have relations or communication with the family. Even though we call ourselves "Saints" we are not perfect.
I have a brother who is a faithful Latter Day Saint (like I consider myself to be) but unfortunately we don't talk or communicate as much as I would like. Its the old family differences and trouble between brothers that sometimes happens. Or whatever you call it.
If we were both 100% Christ like we would resolve our differences but we are both imperfect.
I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I believe in the Savior (Large S). I suppose I could type all Capitals to show I really mean it but that would be like yelling it and not really how I like to talk about the Saviour.
Most civil and many religious ceremonies say "till death do you part". Implying that death releases the couple. Many non-Mormons I have met however believe they will be togethr with their family for eternity. What kind of Heaven would it be withou Family?
I seem to recall that the treatment of wives is unequal in the afterlife, as they can be called to the husband's side or rejected at his choosing, unless it is a Temple marriage.
I hadn't heard this before. Men and Women are coequals. You can't marry unless both consent to it.
I am not Catholic so of course I have no authority to speak about them, but as an outsider witnessing the cahngeover to Pope Benedict, the vote and proceedings were closed. It was a secret meeting. No press, no outsiders like me were invited
Christ at times in the Bible told his disciples not to preach to certain groups. The Gospel later did go to the masses but the doctrines were witheld from Gentiles at first.
I agree with the above statement. not sure what exactly you are getting at. I beleive Jesus Christ is my personal Saviour and Redeemer who was born of the Virgin Mary and died for my sins. Most Mormons I know believe the same.
When I do, they leave the porch.
You wouldnt be mixing up the Mormons with other missionaries. When on my mission I had people think I was A Jehovas Witness all the time. Even if I clearly said I was from the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints some would still think I was a Jehova's witness. Many Latinos thought we were FBI or "La Migra" - Border Patrol, but that's another thread ;-)
If it was Mormon Missionaries on your porch. most are young 19 year olds. While they do have the Spirit of the Lord and are called to witness of Jesus Christ I would venture to guess they may have been intimidated.
We are counseled strongly not to bible bash while on our missions. I got into an argument once with a little old lady who was a Seventh Day Adventist about whether Saturday or Sunday was the true Sabbath. We both quoted scriptures about it to each other. Later I felt guilty for arguing with a little old lady. It was Un-Christlike of me.
The Book of Mormon is the Record of the Ressurected Lord appearing to the ancient inhabitants of the Americas. "Mormon" was an early Prophet. It covers 600 BC - 420 AD. Christ Appears in 33 AD.
Jesus Christ appeared to Joseph Smith in 1820 in New York.
