Gov. Mitt Romney says he would be willing to talk about his Mormon religion in broad terms should he run for president but would shy away from debating specific beliefs.
"I think initially some people would say, `Gosh, I don't know much about your faith. Tell me about it.' And I'd probably outline the fundamentals: I'm a religious person, I believe that Jesus Christ is my savior," Romney said during an appearance on PBS's "The Charlie Rose Show." "But then as you get into the details of doctrines, I'd probably say, 'Look, time out.'"
Among other things, Mormons believed in polygamy until 1890 and banned blacks from the priesthood until 1978. They also maintain temples open only to members where rites such as vicarious baptisms for the dead are performed.
Romney also reiterated on the show, which aired Monday, that he believes the question of whether to outlaw abortion should be left up to individual states. It was a nuanced view that allows him to maintain his anti-abortion views while leaving intact Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court ruling allowing abortion.

"You've made your point that you don't like him, but said practically nothing of why."
Mostly because of what I've seen him do in Mass. He is a socialist who, judging from what he's done there, increase taxes, heavily regulate firearms, socialize medicine, and drive people away.
"Sir you have no knowledge of the Mormon faith."
not a sir, I work for a living. I've never been a mormon but have studied the doctrine and had friends who were/are mormon. I don't have any hatred for it. To me its just another cult similiar to scientology.
Huh?
If that were true, then he would be in favor of overturning Roe v. Wade. Roe v. Wade took away the rights of the states to make that determination.
I have a feeling he is completely ignorant of his own position. That does not bode well for his candidacy. But if he is in favor of leaving the decision to outlaw abortions up to the individual states and he promises to appoint judges who would follow that view, then I'd have to say I'd have no problem voting for him if he is the Republican candidate. But if he can't figure out what Roe v. Wade means, then I suspect he is not smart enough to pull that off.
Sir , sorry I'm not to show respect, I can't believe this statement.
Your posts lead me to believe you have a hatred for some thing you don't understand.
I noticed this contradiction as well. I understand that Romney used to be Pro-Choice, but I'm not certain of that.
Hey Mr.Romney, you are speaking like a Christian. Mormons do not believe in Jesus Christ as Saviour. So either you are not a Mormon or you speak with forked tongue.
Romney was pro-choice a short 4 years ago when he ran for Governor of Massachusetts, only now when he's running for the President he decided to change his views. This RINO is full of it.
understand that if a non-Mormon girl was to marry a Mormon, her family would not be allowed to watch the ceremony in the temple in SLC"
Only a select few get married in the SLC temple.Usually the ((("PROPHET")))performs the ceremony which makes it an eternal marriage. All other marriages disolve at the death of one of the partners.
Yes, he used to be. I'm confident he's pro-life now, though, as it isn't exactly politically profitable to be pro-life in Massachusetts.
I think the reporter is completely ignorant of what he's talking about.
Northeastern RINO. Enough said.
BTW - your screenname could have just been Steve McQueen. No need for the King. McQueen was a real man's man despite the last name.
"Your posts lead me to believe you have a hatred for some thing you don't understand."
I hate very few things. Terrorists, child rapists, and certain members of the MSM.
Apathy is probably a more accurate term. I do confess to being annoyed a the way Mormons claim to be Christian. I'm certainly not alone in that.
All of this is why his being morman is important. When a person runs for office I beleive you should consider the whole person. If you don't beleive religion is important who would you feel if some Muslim was running for President.
What are your religious credentials that allow you to make that statement?
As an ex-Mormon I can attest to the fact that all Mormons believe that "Jesus Christ" is their savior. Doctrinal differences lie in the definitions, but the statement by Romney is an honest one.
A non-member cannot marry in the temple. They would have a marriage in the chapel by the bishop and her family would be able to attend. This has always been true.
How interesting that non-Mormons are so comfortable telling Mormons what they believe. Yes, Jesus Christ is the Savior of the world and that is what Mormons believe. You would have couched your own beliefs more accurately if you had stated that you did believe that Christ is a Savior to the Mormons. For the record, your beliefs do not limit the Savior's power.
Again, we have non-Mormons proclaiming what the Mormons believe. If a member adheres to strict moral standards and practices faith, then he or she can enter the temple. It is not a "select few" nor is the standard bar so high that it is unattainable. Yes, we believe in eternal marriage performed by priesthood authority (not limited to the prophet or general authorities of the Church) and not "until death do you part."
A good point too little understood.
Then help us understand. Give us more than the polished white shirt, tie, and youthful smile version.
Have you noticed all the Polygamy shows on mainstream television, A&E, History, PBS, news story shows... I think the left is afraid of him running. There were rumbles of his Presidential interests a few years ago. My theory is they are just setting up a hostile view of Mormons in the public at large. All they have to say when he runs is "Mormon" and they are hoping people will have a bad taste in their mouth. "Oh no, not another religious fanatic", "look at what they do to woman and children"
That's just my theory...
