The F-104 Starfighter that famed test pilot Chuck Yeager once flew is now a jet car. The new owners found the fuselage of the one-time record-breaking plane in a scrap yard.
They've rebuilt the fighter as a car, in hopes of setting a new land speed record of 800 miles per hour. The current record is 763, held by a British pilot.
The North American Eagle is on display in Palmdale, California, home of Edwards Air Force Base, where Yeager once flew.
The car will be tested next month, with a target date of July 2007 for the record attempt.

Agreed, but hey...it's being put to good use and hopefully it will be the record set by the Brit.

That's OK, if I found it, it would be in the lobby of my office, in place of a fountain that has caused me nothing but grief.

I thought the CAF limited itself to WW II aircraft.

talked to an old timer here(MN) last weekend who has some record at Bonneville. He also survived a crash there at 248 mph.
IIRC,he set it in a custom, 3 cylinder,bug-eyed Sprite.

Saw a Starfighter at the Atlantic City show three years ago . It came and went so fast past center spot that the announcer was caught off guard . Gone before he could say it was coming .

I'll have to go back and read the General's biography again. I thought the F-104 that Yeager "set a record" in was the one from which he had to eject. Perhaps I'm remembering a condensed Hollywood version of events, or something.
Dang, I should know this... the Starfighter has always been one of my favorite jets.
To: ol' hoghead
They have a static F-4 and Huey on display.
May have added a THUD, but I haven't been out to a meeting in months.
