Monday, May 22, 2006 12:44 a.m. EDT Mel Gibson Slams 'Da Vinci Code'
Catholic actor Mel Gibson has slammed "The Da Vinci Code" book and movie for attacking the beliefs that he holds sacred, World Entertainment Network reported.
"The Passion of the Christ" star has been outraged about the thriller's controversial plot concerning Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene. [Editor's Note: Get NewsMax's special report "The Da Vinci Con" FREE with Ann Coulter's book, "Godless" CLICK HERE NOW!]
Gibson says, "What worries me is that people will take this as fact.
"I'm not angry, per se, that it refutes everything I hold sacred, the foundations of my beliefs. The Da Vinci Code is an admitted work of fiction but it cleverly weaves fact into maverick theories in a way that will appear plausible to some."
The angry star was actually the first choice of Dr. Robert Lomas (the intellectual who inspired the Robert Langdon character) to play him. Tom Hanks plays Langdon in the film
My opinion of a man is not based on his opinion of President Bush. Not everyone here is a bot.
Right after the book came out, a guy on the plane said, "I would find comfort knowing the decendants Christ walked among us.." Thats an exact quote. The irony? I was reading the book at the time and had it on my lap while listening to the two talk about it..
Not a hypocrite - the man loves Jesus and is standing up for Him.
The Patriot and Braveheart were just movies and did not seek to bring question into Jesus' life.
Waco might have been the inspiration for that scene. I don't know if Mel has ever said.
It is, but you'd be surprised at the number of people who have bought into it as fact. And of course the author, Dan Brown, had gotten caught up in all the hype. After all, it means millions more for him.
So?
That means we are not to discuss the harm it does to those who might be swayed by its fiction intermixed with some facts?
The almighty dollar?
Nah, just sad for the folks who believe it's all true instead of just enjoying it for what it is - fiction.
Gosh, I don't think I'd ever want to actually *read* the Da Vinci Code! But I'll check out your recommendation.
You are comparing pebbles and boulders. If Gibson had had King George III personally ordering the burning of the Church, then the magnitude of the historical error would be somewhat the same.
Outstanding comments.
Oh, guess Mel has no right to speak up when Jesus is mocked, lied about for the almighty dollar?
Since when is Jesus and his crucification and life to be the subject for any form of fiction those that do not honor Him choose to make?
This is like the "art"? where they show all kinds of defamation of Christ and we have to accept because of freedom of speech. Well, I can tell you man may tell us we have to accept it - but God looks at it a lot differently.
Except for this. While Jesus is a historical figure, his divinity is not based on history, but on faith. The Da Vinci Code is not "historical" either, but simply a piece of fiction a la "National Treasure."
Just remember it is irony (ala Gibbon)
You are correct--no patriots were ever locked in a church and burned during the RevWar. Fiction.
He's got all the right in the world to speak out. And I have the right to chuckle at him.
Since when do we have the right to make movies about Jesus that don't fit with the beliefs of his followers? I guess since we Americans started believing in free speech and free expression.
I think its a cleverly presented tale, but only because the original hoax was done in great detail.
Frankly Dan Brown irritates me for insisting its all true so people are welcome to criticize. I just find it a bit rich coming from Mel Gibson.
I think some of the criticism is misplaced though. Even if the story alleges Jesus did something that offends some, any criticism from the protagonists is aimed the church, not Jesus himself. Not the same thing.
The King throwing that girly boy out the window in Brave Heart and showing the British burning a congegation alive in Patriot, upset some of the same people who think Oliver Stone is an unbiased historian.
If I remember correctly,Roth Holstreuth, the writer was an east german communist seeking to take the heat off of the brutality and death Russian communists had wreaked on innocents after the Revolution and thereafter. And what better way than to blame the Pope and the Church. It has always been such an obstacle to those who would be god.
