I searched but did not see a thread already open for tonights speech. I think this is the most important speech the President will probably make for the remainder of his term.
Mod Note:
This could turn into a whack-a-troll thread. All immigration trolls that would like to participate should post here. It'll be interesting to see if we mods can whack the trolls faster than they can sign up new accounts.
Jim
Thanks, this needed to be said.
Remember when background checks for handguns was not supposed to be for rifles and shotguns? You have a valid point.
Wait till you have a Supreme Court that rules our border is illegal....I don't put it past someone like Lawrence Tribe.
"Bush may cause the loss of the Senate, House and White House.
This is a real national issue and he did not just make it better. "
That's such bull. If the borderphobes want to blame their own temper tantrum on Bush for being realistic, then so be it.
You got that right! They are done, stick a fork in them.
George W. Bush. You protect us from Islamic extremists, but you allow us to be destroyed from within!
Was the Bracero program started in 1942 "amnesty" too?
I guess he could have read an entire proposed piece of legislation on the air, although he'd barely be past the preamble now.
He laid out what he wanted. It's up to Congress to deliver what they think he will sign.
Somehow many folks here want ALL the details spelled out in a 16 minute speech.
Those details have to go through the sausage-maker called the US Congress. I doubt the President cares what the enforcement procedures are so long as it accomplishes the goals he set out tonight.
If you set unrealistic expectations for a short speech, then it's easy to criticize. But it makes the criticism pure rhetoric and not useful.
I don't consider anyone worthless unless they render themself worthless.
Not-voting renders you worthless.
Additionally, an effective physical barrier is needed from Brownsville to San Diego. Sensors and cameras are only useful when there are enough agents to apprehend the border crossers. Otherwise, they are like cameras at convenience stores, which at most can record the appearance of the lawbreaker. When the illegal migrant gets to Phoenix, Denver, Chicago, or wherever, he will blend into the large immigrant communities. Only a wall will work, and nothing less.
Additionally, the offering of a "guest worker" program will essentially permit those here illegally to stay here. The 11 million number is not realistic, as this number has stayed fixed for years despite massive illegal immigration. Furthermore, absent an effective means to curb illegal entry into the U.S., which the President's program does not offer, uncontrolled immigration will continue, curbed only by the limits of the Mexican and Latin American population who would immigrate.
In two and a half years, the President and First Lady will retire, possibly to a mansion in Highland Park or some other well-protected area of Dallas, living in the country club world that will provide them a safe and happy existence for the remainder of their days. The rest of us, especially in the Southwestern states, will suffer from the inundation of what was formerly an English-speaking, middle class nation and its ultimate conversion into the northernmost adjunct of Latin America.
Yea...a lot of them are cool political pros.
Yes, I am amazed at the posters I have never heard of suddenly telling me what a liberal I am!!
It is rassuring to see the familiar freepers much more reasonable and supportive of Bush on the thread!!
I don't want or expect any kind of forced deportation program - we don't need it, its not practical anyway.
give me real border security and employer sanctions for 2-3 years. let's see who leaves on their own. use civil fines only against employers, no arrests. let's see how fast teh jobs dry up. after 3 years, let's see what the landscape looks like - then we can determine who remains and should be legalized, who should not be, and what kind of legal immigration program we should have going forward.
Good speech by Bush but I don't think it won over conservatives.
How can anyone expect improvement in Mexico when all they have to do is jump over the Rio Grande? Let them stay and affect change in their own country...
So, you won't mind if I stop by your house, empty your refrigerator, sleep in your bed, get sick and send for a doctor, then toss you the bill, right?
I mean even if a cop catches me, its OK for me to do it because -- because -- you want to run by me why this is OK?
Too late. Bushquist done sent out the get here up as quick as ya'll can fellers call down Fox's way.
Fox is not even running for re-election in July. Next?
It's here.
