Bush set for immigration speech

BUSH SET FOR IMMIGRATION SPEECH

WHITE HOUSE President Bush is getting set for a prime-time speech on
immigration tomorrow night.

Aides note the 8 p-m, Eastern Time, speech will be the president's first from the Oval Office that does not involve Iraq and the war on terrorism. And they say that reflects Bush's
"passion" on immigration.

He's speaking as the Senate is poised to clear a compromise measure including his idea for a guest worker program. However, a rival House bill is limited to a border crackdown, and meshing the two won't be easy.

Stand Up For America !

"We have room for but one flag, the American flag...
We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...
And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

Received from a friend.

At the Battle of Thermopylae, Xerxes I of Persia, with 600,000 men, met King Leonidas I of Sparta, with only 300 men. Leonidas had predicted the outcome of the battle, and so he chose only men with sons old enough to take over their family duties. Xerxes promised to spare the lives of the 300 Spartans if they would only lay down their weapons. The Spartans refused, shouting "Molon Labe" ("Come and Get Them"), and held the narrow mountain pass of Thermopylae for days. All the Spartans were eventually killed, but they inflicted such damage to the Persian army (20,000-40,000 dead) that Xerxes was unable to utterly conquer the Greek Peninsula. This act of heroism did nothing less than save Western civilization. The world that you know is due in no small part to those brave men who gave their lives 2,500 years ago. Today there lies a plaque at the site of the battle. It reads: "Go tell the Spartans, passerby, that here, by Spartan law, we lie." John Ruskin called this epitaph the noblest words ever uttered by man. The story of Thermopylae is very similar to the Alamo. Travis, Crockett, and Bowie considered their lives less important than the freedom of their people. As Otto Scott said, "Ours are the same tests and crises that our fathers and forefathers encountered." Our people face the threat of extinction today, and unless we count our lives as less important than the lives of our children, our people will perish. Sic Semper Tyrannis.

Earth! render back from out thy breast
A remnant of our Spartan dead!
Of the three hundred grant but three,
To make a new Thermopylae!
~ Lord Byron, Don Juan

Meet the Democrats' worst nightmare
Black Republican's bid for governor shaking coalition

WASHINGTON – With Republicans nationally quaking in their boots over control of the House and Senate in this fall's midterm elections, there is one potential bright spot on the horizon for the GOP.

It comes in the form of a gubernatorial race in the battleground state of Ohio – yes, that Ohio, the one Democrats still accuse Republicans of stealing in 2004.

Meet Kenneth Blackwell, the secretary of state and a candidate for the highest office in Ohio – a conservative black official and proven statewide vote-getter.

THE PRICE OF A FENCE
By Michelle Malkin

The Senate ignores the Windbag from Massachusetts and votes:

The Senate voted to build 370 miles of triple-layered fencing along the Mexican border Wednesday and clashed over citizenship for millions of men and women who live in the United States illegally.
Amid increasingly emotional debate over election-year immigration legislation, senators voted 83-16 to add fencing and 500 miles of vehicle barriers along the southern border. It marked the first significant victory in two days for conservatives seeking to place their stamp on the contentious measure.

But if the price of the fence is this...

The prospects were less favorable for their attempt to strip out portions of the legislation that could allow citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants and create new guest worker programs.
...is it worth it? And given past history and yesterday's vote against enforcement first, you already know which provision--the amnesty, not the fence--is the Senate's top priority and which will be in place first.

whew--- I finally caught up with where ya'll are on this thread!! :)

1. I have spent all week, and weekend, researching this latest bird flu situation in Indonesia and the Ivory Coast. My husband & I have been hitting anybody that will listen in the community. He is going business, I am going medical. Tomorrow, we go local officials. I got an email from my county to watch that creepy made for TV movie. So, we started a little inquisition. Not happy on some of our findings. Anyway, what it has to do with this thread is part of what we are saying is, if it hits like is being projected, can you imagine the impact on the legal citizens of this community and nation? Our health care infrastructure is already raffished by the illegals abusing it. When this country may need it the most, it may well not be there for them.

2. Call the law on the machete carrying guy: I have hesitated because I think they will blow me off. However, I really ought to do just that the next time I see him. And, of course, take pictures.
