An open letter to William P. Leahy, SJ, president of Boston College.
I am writing to resign my post as an adjunct professor of English at Boston College.
I am doing so -- after five years at BC, and with tremendous regret -- as a direct result of your decision to invite Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to be the commencement speaker at this year's graduation.
Many members of the faculty and student body already have voiced their objection to the invitation, arguing that Rice's actions as secretary of state are inconsistent with the broader humanistic values of the university and the Catholic and Jesuit traditions from which those values derive.
But I am not writing this letter simply because of an objection to the war against Iraq. My concern is more fundamental. Simply put, Rice is a liar.
She has lied to the American people knowingly, repeatedly, often extravagantly over the past five years, in an effort to justify a pathologically misguided foreign policy.

Send in Rove.
However I'm sure if they had invited a convicted cop killer to do the speech he'd have been just fine with it.
Imagine - upset that someone as prestigious as the Secretary of State will be speaking at your school.
"Adjunct professors" are outranked by, and paid less than, janitors.
Maybe we can have Rice do a tour and speak at every university in the U.S. Think of the possibilities.
Ooo! Good letter! Mine was shorter: "You're resigning? Who cares."
A post at Rate My Professor.com states that he is "a legend in his own mind". Both his parents are psychiatrists, maybe that explains why he writes tawdry books about depraved sex. He has been described as "Boston's most shameless writer, he will write anything to get attention. In the vernacular of the free press....a whore." It seems he has spent the better part of the Spring Semester on the road hawking his latest trash. It involves a relationship between a man and his girlfriend who is missing an eye. Use you worst imagination. He also drew heavily from his observations of the female students at BC. He may be getting out of Dodge before some father who found some of his publishings gets a hold of him.
Yeah...funny how the current admin is "evil", when their accusers clearly, by their own actions, are.
Ahhhh well...the NSA hasn't started the prozac water supply enrichment program (Surely designed by Condi)...so we're going to end up with nuts like this "adjunct professor" from now until the end of time.
This is just a pathetic publicity stunt from this whimpering whining wanker. He has no life, no career, so he figures he'll try to stir something up and see if he can be a hero to the rabid left. Watch him, he'll probably jump from his lowly 'adjunct' position to a tenure-track job elsewhere, because the left just loves this kind of nonsense.
When does he get his book deal?
English Profs are such rebels!
Yup, but I still had fun telling him off.
Hopefully, his resignation has already been accepted. Many of these socialist professors have a way of changing their minds when something will benefit them.
Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.
I was going to suggest that we give his office over to the campus ROTC, but then I remembered that as an adjunct, he's probably lucky to have his own mail slot in the faculty lounge.
Another English lit person who couldn't get a full time job. There are thousands of Eng lit MAs and PhDs who can't find academic work or who adjunct for years (looks like this schlub did it for 5 years) without finding a tenure track position.
Trust me, his adjunct shoes will be filled by another schlub in a minute and no one will even know this guy is gone.
Now if he was a professor of engineering, computer science, etc, he could just be someone working at a real job who like to teach and is doing so part time. But a professor of English is likely to be a failed writer, or one who has shot his bolt with one or two stories or books sold, and then no takers for his later works.
" . . exhort my students to pursue truth and knowledge"
I thought his job was to teach English.
