Tancredo Rips Government’s Spying of Minutemen

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressmen Tom Tancredo (R-CO) decried a recently-disclosed U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) practice of tipping off the Mexican military to the location of Minutemen volunteers. According to a story in this morning’s Inland Daily Bulletin, CBP notifies the Mexican government of when and where the Minutemen are planning to monitor the border and if violence is used by the Minutemen against illegal aliens. There has not been one verified instance of Minutemen volunteers using violence against illegal aliens.

“The Mexican military doesn’t exactly have a ‘good government’ reputation. The Border Patrol has documented more than two hundred incursions into the U.S by the Mexican military, and Texas sheriffs even apprehended Mexican government vehicles that were used to ferry drug runners across the border. By tipping off Mexico’s military to the Minutemen’s location, the U.S. government is asking for trouble,” said Tancredo.

“Heavily-armed military officials stationed only yards from civilians are at least intimidating. I can only surmise that the Border Patrol bureaucrats’ spying is meant to have a chilling effect on the Minutemen’s recruitment of more volunteers,” said Tancredo.

“The Minutemen haven’t been accused of breaking the law. Quite the contrary—they have gone out of their way to aid law enforcement and ensure the safety of our border. The U.S. government has no grounds upon which to stifle the Minutemen’s constitutional right to organize,” Tancredo concluded. “I want to know the legal basis for CBP informing a foreign government of the activities of private citizens who are obeying the law.”

Rely on yourselves, and NEVER trust your government."

agree 100%. One thing I have noticed about Freepers is that they have a superior understanding of the spirit of our Founders and the value of true Liberty than most of our so called leaders in government. After reading this, I wouldn't care if they impeached Bush. A week ago, I would never have thought such, but this is such a betrayal of true patriots, the minutemen. Damn, when will we wake up from this nightmare.

It's 1861 all over again....

It is the same exact issue too: globalization versus protectionism, and free labor versus slave labor. W gets to play the blue blooded, slave loving, Confederate plantation owner. Now all we need is for a little known statesmen (Tancredo) to come out of now where to lead us. The Republicans can either back him or go out of business.

Laura Bush was one of the strongest supporters of the Harriet Miers nomination. Imagine what we'd have now if Miers had gotten on the Court.

It didn't start with Tancredo. There are over 800 posts here and the source is linked.

Let's hope that this disclosure is the beginning of impeachment -- something which is long overdue.

Then refuse to talk to the misinformation squad.

Nobody but their own team agrees with what they are saying anyway.

I don't agree with the Oklahoma City Bomber Timothy McVeigh however I see how revolutionaries get their zeal/fervor.

I got your point. My point was for the life of me I can't begin to imagine WHY he is doing what he is doing. So, I am starting to entertain tin foil hat conspiracy ideas that I once scoffed at!

They should be exempt from having any Federal Agency report their movements to ANY Foreign Government.

Interpol already gets (on request) US police surveillance. The Surveillance Society does have a downside. It's for The Children.

I'm also on your side! Don't forget who the minutemen represent. People like Patrick Henry and George Washington were real American heros in spite of what they may teach in schools today.

And I have your back. God bless and protect our military and the Minutemen.

What does depression feel like? I've been fighting off crying since it has sunk in what just how our president betrayed us.

"Do you actually think that any of those illegals are going to vote Republican? You seem to have your parties confused, unless that is you are one of the many Democrat moles who have pooped up on FR the last trwo years to bash Bush and the Republicans."

Go back and read my entire post. I did mention that I voted for Bush, twice. So you don't believe that the president deserves to be bashed in regards to the wide-open border? You accuse me of being a Democrat shill, but you sure sound like a toe-the-line and can-do-no-wrong Republican tool to me.

"I think I'll watch Lou Dobbs tonight, something I very rarily do."

Odd isn't it. It's as is Bush and Dobbs morphed. Never thought I'd see the day.

I don't think they are going to vote GOP. I do think the people who give the largest donations to the GOP like the cheap labor and, even if they are not using it directly, they benefit from the downward pressure on wages that comes with the package.

Unfortunately impeachment means about as much as a parking ticket right now.

Bringing Timothy McVeigh into this is exactly what the open borders lobby hoped you'd do.

We are advocating an adherance and enforcement of our laws. That leaves out the Timothy McVeighs. It also leaves out the open borders lobby.

" Tom Tancredo is one of the few there that seems to "get it."

Any chance we can elect him in '08? :)

Well, didn't Hillary say in 2004 speech with Barbara Boxer that we are going to take it away from you and give to those who need it more... or something to that effect?

Good morning.
"If the Minutemen do nothing wrong, they have nothing to fear. The government spies on everyone else, why should they be exempt?"

The Mexican military has brazenly crossed to our side of the border many times in the last few years. They are believed to have connections with drug and human smugglers and they, or the smugglers have fired on BP recently.

Letting the Mexican government know the MM are going to be is setting our brothers up to be injured or killed.

I'm glad you have no problem being spied upon, but I'm less happy that you are willing for it to be done to other citizens.
