Democrats pledge probes of Bush, not impeachment

By Andrea Hopkins 10 minutes ago

Democrats will launch a series of investigations of the Bush administration if they take control of Congress in November but are not out to impeach President George W. Bush, a top Democrat said on Sunday.

House of Representatives Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said Democrats would hold hearings on the use of intelligence in the lead-up to the Iraq war and investigate the high price of energy and prescription drugs if they win the extra 15 seats they need for a House majority in the mid-term elections.

But Pelosi denied Republican claims that her party would move quickly to impeach Bush.

"I said we'd be having hearings on the war, we'd have hearings. But I don't see us going to a place of impeachment," Pelosi said in an interview on NBC's Meet the Press. "Investigation does not equate to impeachment. Investigation is the requirement of Congress. It is about checks and balances."

In Congress, the majority party controls the chairmanship and agenda of all committees, where most laws are drafted and investigative and subpoena power is held.

With Bush's public approval rating at an all-time low and Republicans fearing they could lose control of both houses of Congress in November, Democrats are laying out plans for an aggressive start to the new Congress.

Michigan Rep. John Conyers (news, bio, voting record), the senior Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, has called for the creation of committee to recommend grounds for possible impeachment of Bush and Vice-President Dick Cheney.

But Pelosi said such a decision rests with her and the Democratic caucus.

"John Conyers is an enthusiastic advocate. I am the leader. Our caucus will decide where we go," she said.

That is what I am hearing also, you have to get with someone that knows what is going on. I think for once the Government is pushing understanding and patience with such a huge overhaul of a system, and even though it was off to a rocky start it is doing great for People that stuck with it. I believe that CVS Pharmacies(formerly Eckerd Drug) had a really tough time at first in my county. I don't know about anywhere else, but usually is there is a problem in one area it is a widespread Company problem, and they are all over America now.

Believe it or not, a lot of Prescription meds came from Herbs. I don't believe that you should use anything long term especially sleep meds. You need to know the reason behind why you cannot sleep. Sometimes it is worry, anxiety, pain, disruptions like baby crying or whatever. if you need these meds every night, that is a huge problem. It is too simple to pop a pill instead of finding out why you are not able to sleep. With alcoholics trying to dry out, that is the reason they have trouble sleeping, they want the booze.

I had not seen this piece, thanks.

It's a good summary of Pelosi's position on impeachement (link back to article provided by defconw for those who don't want to drill back in the thread) as put forward on MTP today.  However, I don't think it means what they say it means in this article.  In fact I think this piece was written before MTP was filmed.  This is a very carefully crafted pre-election message for the "mainstream audience" based on their polling and focus groups saying they will vote against the dims if it means more partisan hearings and, particularly, an attempt to impeach Bush.

Pelosi was put on the talking head shows today to get this message out, above all else:  "The dims are not scary and intent on continuing the partisan fighting."  She kept coming back to this "a new day will dawn" crap.

And it is the most obscene and unbelievable BS ever pushed by the dims.  They are going to get laughed off of the political stage if they try to sell this.

My solution for Bush and Frist is to explicitely seperate these issues. As you say, "first turn off the water." The amnesty crowd is holding border security hostage to "reform" which really equates to amnesty, as it is currently proposed.

I agree with you. The House bill essentially does that. The problem is that the Dems in the Senate don't want to separate the issues. They are using immigration reform legislation as a quid pro quo for a watered down border security measure. As I indicated, the Dems want the issue rather than a solution. What the GOP must do is reframe the issue to get political leverage.

I want Bush to table all issues regarding immigration except securing the borders. No new initiatives against illegals who are here already for right now or the employers who hire them (again, for right now). No new proposals about a possible amnesty or some sort of crackdown. Just table it until the borders are secure.

That would be a good start. Bush got out in front of the Reps in Congress. He should have supported the House bill initially, but you can't unring a bell.

Then turn the question of the borders over to the DOD. I have some fairly specific (though likely flawed) ideas about expanding the role of the Coast Guard to be a general border guard with further responsbility as a rapid reaction force for any domestic disaster or as the lead agency responding to a domestic terrorist attack.

I have problems with DOD getting involved directly. The Coast Guard is part of Homeland Security and should be involved. DOD (including the National Guard) is the only Federal Agency who can provide a rapid reaction force for a major domestic disaster or terrorist attack. DHS can still be the lead agency.

And only when we have clear control of our borders do we open up the question of what to do with the 12+ million who have come here illegally.

It is the right approach. Unfortunately, it may be too late to separate it from immigration reform. The WH and Reps in Congress must make a unified, coordinated effort to reframe the issue.

Great minds think alike ;-) Wrt newsmax, I'm not sure, but IIRC I've seen their stuff posted. The only thing I could find on the FR home page were suits by LA Times and WA Post for copyright infringement - don't see anything about other sites. I usually check the bottom of the article and if it doesn't have something like: this article and no portion of thereof can be reposted, re-broadcasted, blah, blah, then I think we're ok. I think a lot of sites like that their articles get linked and posted or partially posted - - brings more hits to them, which means they can sell more ads.

I have been hoping that Spector is giving Academy or Emmy Award performances for the Dirty, cruddy Dems to keep them off balance. I do not think this is the case because he just lets his motormouth run away with itself. He gets so testy even with the dems if he is challenged on anything that I think he is just 75 Percent ego, and 25 percent tone deaf old fool.

You are assuming that the problem is with the voters - it is not.

The only way to remove an incumbent is to vote them out of office.

I think you just told me that was making an ass of myself (assuming something), and then you made the same point I made.

Congratulations!

OK, good rule of thumb. I normally don't care if I cause trouble, but I don't want to cause the Mods a headache either.

Many books have been written about how classless the Kennedy Family was/is. Most of these Books have said that Jackie took JFK where he finally ended up in the Presidency by making him clean up and get away from his trashy upbringing. She was classy, cultured (no taste in men I guess), and made a difference in his career. I believe Joan Kennedy was good for "The Swimmer",but could not handle all the disgrace and pain he put her through. Patrick was only maybe two when The Mary Jo Chappaquiddick incident happened. What a horrible thing to do to another woman, let alone your wife with a toddler.

Yes, and she even is extremely afraid of just being embarrassed. That is why she strikes out at people so viciously who she perceives hurt her.
