Huge Explosion Rocks Afghan Capital

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060419/ap_on_re_as/afghan_explosion_2

KABUL, Afghanistan - A massive explosion rocked downtown Kabul late Wednesday near its diplomatic area where the U.S. Embassy is located. A large plume of white smoke rose into the air.

The source of the blast was not immediately clear. Emergency vehicle sirens could be heard speeding to the area of the blast.

U.S. Embassy spokesman Lou Fintor could not confirm if the blast targeted the heavily guarded American diplomatic mission, where staff rushed to a bunker in the compound after the blast.

"We are trying to determine what has happened and locate the source of the explosion," Fintor told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.

I'm in Kabul and the bang was not massive--single rocket or arty/mortar round--most probably a 122mm rocket fired from the hills--our embassy sticks out as a target; big, centrally located, and surrounded by lights.

True.

My scale:

Bang/crack = Fire crackers
Boom = M-80's to 60mm mortar, hand grenades
Big Bang = 81mm to 107mm shell, Block of C4
Explosion = 120mm to 155mm shell
Big explosion = 175mm and up, 250 lb. bomb to 1000 lb bomb
Huge explosion = 2000 lb to MOAB.
Massive explosion = Nukes, K-ton
Truly massive = Nukes, M-ton
Astronomical = Do not worry, you wont survive it if you hear it.

For me (Combat Engineer) massive would be something like a cement mixer full of AMPHO/TNT/C4 or some such detonating in my general vicintity.

I'm going to employ the media's criteria for defining explosions. And say that I will be making a Massive explosion in the bathroom here in a minute.

If it wasn't "massive" was it "huge"?
Thanks for all you're doing over there.

Celebrating the 1 year anniversary of the new pope?

Not to diminish the importance of this event, but I can't help but hone in on that word "massive." The media sure loves those kind of words.

Yeah, our scumbag liberal local college toilet paper, the Bucks County Courier Times, loves to use words like that in their headlines, especially if US Marines have been killed. I saw the other day that "Fighting Rages in Ramadi, Baghdad". "Rages". Good word. Yeah
