JERUSALEM (AP) -- The Israeli government has declared Ariel Sharon permanently incapacitated.
Cabinet to convene to approve appointment of Olmert as interim PM
The cabinet will convene Tuesday to approve the appointment of Ehud Olmert as interim prime minister.
In keeping with a decision by Attorney General Menachem Mazuz based on the Basic Law on the Government, this Friday will see the end of the "temporarily incapacitated" state of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who will have been in hospital for 100 days.
The cabinet will therefore convene Tuesday for a special session to confirm Olmert's status as interim prime minister.
JERUSALEM - The Israeli Cabinet on Tuesday declared Prime Minister Ariel Sharon permanently incapacitated, a decision marking the official end of his five-year tenure.Sharon, 78, has been in a coma since he suffered a devastating stroke Jan. 4. Ehud Olmert immediately stepped in for him as acting prime minister. Olmert's Kadima Party has since won national election, and Olmert is trying to form a coalition government.

Bless his soul, they tried keeping him alive, guess the last surgery was useless
A sad end to a great man's political career. Ariel Sharon was a Zionist through and through. He fought for the creation of Israel, in each and every one of our wars, and politically earned the respect and admiration of a majority of Israelis even as he was villified here on Free Republic. His actions were always guided by what he believed would make Israel safe and secure. He is a hero in every sense of the word.
The only surprise to me is that they waited this long.
They needed to keep him through the election. Still, very sad that anyone must suffer like this at the end of their life.
Israel could you use his wisdom and leadership now in the face of the potential nuclear threat from Iran. God rest his soul.

Keep in mind that his "temporarily incapacitated" status was a SHAM designed to keep Netanyahu out of the PM spot before the election.
If he had been declared permanently incapactitated (as he was) then Bibi would have had the incumbent advantage in the election. As head of Likud - the party Sharon was elected via - he would have been PM.
This whole thing has been disgusting on many levels.
No disrespect intended for Sharon, but this stopped being a news story on day two when it became clear that he would not be returning to power.
Sad loss for a previously great general.
I wonder when the decision will be made to pull the plug. Too bad it has to end this way - Israel needs more people like him.
Yes, the harsh realities of politics forced them to keep him technically alive until Olmert's position was secure. But why have that major surgery the other day, after the election?
Perhaps he's pining for the fjords.
The didn't keep the Prime Minister because of the election. The family makes all the decisions and they have not given up hope.
Bibi couldn't win any electioon in Israel. Likud got all of 12 seats. Again, the family makes the decisions. That you would suggest otherwise is what totally disgusts me. Pathetic!
Does the family get to keep the home or is it going to Medicare? I wonder when Medicare will start a mortgage company. Destitutedbystroke Mae.

If you think Sharon was really "temporarily incapacitated" then you are a fool. That's the designation that let Olmert ascend to office.
The election outcome might have been very different had the Likud party which is the one which had been voted into office took the helm - as it should have been.
What I said only disgusts you because you intentionally chose to misunderstand it.
