I've looked as hard as I can for a bright side to this Republican sellout, and the best I can come up with is this:

since Frist's bill is apparently the basis for what is being agreed to, doesn't that mean that Frist will appoint the Senate negotiators for the conference committee? If so, that will be better than a conference between, say, Kennedy and the House.

This is Frist's last chance to redeem something of his standing in the eyes of conservatives- by appointing negotiators who will agree with a lot of what the House voted for.

Damn I wish you would all just calm down.

There is not going to be a final bill, so I really don't understand what you are all so upset about.

Congress is not going to risk a single vote by taking one side or the other, the Senate had to do something to save voters, and now the House will too. The final bill offered will be too smelly for either side, and there will be no bill.

Who cant see this?

NO BILL IS GOING TO PASS, PEOPLE...

No matter how much they try to avoid the word 'amnesty', this whole thing is still a big floating you-know-what in a punch bowl.

FAIRUS e-mail

Some Senators Listening to (Hearing) the American Public!

The Senate failed to invoke cloture this morning by a vote of 39-60 on the Specter Amnesty, all but making it go it go away. You are making the difference! Many Senate offices tell us your voices are loud and clear-no amnesty! Since the cloture vote on the Specter Amendment failed, the largest amnesty proposal in American history does not have enough support behind it to pass the Senate.

Now, we face the second wave of amnesty-a late night "compromise" hashed out between Maj. Leader Frist and Sens. Hagel and Martinez.

Majority Leader Frist decided to invoke cloture on this new "compromise" -- one that allows illegal aliens who have been here for at least five years (Illegally) to have amnesty. Those who recently entered the country have only to apply for papers and get legal status, and the requirement they depart the country is full of loopholes, starting with the fact this "mandatory" measure can be waived. Thus, the longer you've broken the law the greater your reward. Does anyone believe that this scenario is any better? With the rampant document fraud encountered each day by employers and USCIS will there be anyone with papers showing they've been here less than five years? We doubt it!

An amnesty is an amnesty!

  1. There is no punishment for having broken our laws
  2. Illegal aliens can continue to stay/live here
  3. Illegal aliens can continue to work here
  4. Despite breaking our laws, illegal aliens are given a privileged path to U.S. citizenship
  5. In essence, illegal aliens are rewarded for breaking our laws

We have received many reports from you about your calls to the U.S. Senate. We are so appreciative of not only your calls, but for your feedback. Your feedback helps us direct our resources, and yours, in the right direction.

Many of you have stated your disappointment with the responsiveness of the Congressional staff answering your calls. Please treat this interaction with these Senate offices as you would with any company. You deserve to be treated respectfully. When you call, get the staffer's name first. If at anytime you feel you are not treated with the appropriate "customer/constituent service," ask to speak to their supervisor or staff director. You may even call back to the DC office or to their district offices to voice your complaint. These elected officials work for you-remember to hold them accountable.

Please call these Senators to respectfully but assertively tell them to vote against the Hagel/Martinez amnesty (vote to take place at 10:30, Friday, April 7), and to vote against the doubling of legal immigration legislation also in the Hagel/Martinez amendment that will be voted on tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. We need to adopt border security and enforcement only provisions like S. 2377 introduced by Senators Nelson, Coburn and Sessions.

Here's a suggestion of what you can say. . .

"Hi, with whom am I speaking? Thank you for taking my call. I want to urge the Senator to vote against both the Hagel/Martinez amnesty and the Frist legislation tomorrow. The only thing acceptable to the American public is true enforcement like S.2377, the Nelson, Coburn, Sessions bill. I will be tracking the Senator's vote."

Please Call these Senators' offices now! They are waffling on this vote between special interests and the public interest. Tell them to vote for the public interest and say no to the Hagel/Martinez and Frist legislation.

What politicians understand is by rewarding these millions of criminals, they will imbolden them to break more laws.

Do you honest think, even if you make these criminals, U.S. citizens, that they will obey the laws like for example buying drivers insurance, or filing/paying income taxes.

NO!!! A Thousand Times NO!!!

PLEASE CALL ALL MEMBERS OF THE SENATE BUT PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU CALL FRIST, DOLE, AND BURR.

Talking Points

Each office will tell you that Senator ______ does not support amnesty.

Tell them "Nobody believes you. Nobody is buying this Guest Worker is not amnesty. It is a lie. Stop this bill!"

"How can the US Government tell how long an illegal alien has been in America? That is a ridiculous proposal and does not change the fact this is an amnesty!"

"Current law calls for illegal aliens to be deported. The goal of this bill is to lift that law and that is an amnesty!"

"This bill contains in-state tuition for illegal aliens which is opposed by most Americans. In fact, a recent Fox News poll shows 98% opposition!"

"I'm working with Americans for Legal Immigration. There are thousands of us. Any member of the Senate or Congress that votes for any bill that allows illegal aliens currently in the US to stay will not receive our endorsement and will face our opposition in their next election."

"We will remember in November"

"Vote No on the bill! We want enforcement only. Enforce our existing laws!"

"You were elected to represent me. I'm an American citizen. It is clear that the purpose of this legislation is to represent foreign nationals that have become illegal aliens to satisfy your big contributors!"

"Why is Senator _____ not listening to Americans?" (wait for response then continue) "Any elected official considering supporting a Guest Worker Amnesty is not listening to or representing Americans."

"Guest Worker is an Amnesty. The American public is not stupid."

"I will dedicate my vote, my time, my funds, my life to defeating any candidate that votes for any bill with a Guest Worker Amnesty in it."

"What other laws designed to protect America and Americans do you plan to leave unenforced and remove later?"

"Your office is aware that the Border Patrol is reporting a massive increase in illegal crossings because you are even discussing this legislation?"

THIS BILL MAY PASS THE SENATE, BUT WE CAN STILL STOP IT IN THE HOUSE.

EVEN IF BOTH THE HOUSE AND SENATE PASS GUEST WORKER, THIS LEGISLATION CAN BE REMOVED LATER AND OR USED AS A NEW TOOL TO DEPORT ILLEGAL ALIENS. WE WILL FIGHT THEM EVERY STEP OF THE WAY BUT DO NOT LOSE YOUR MOTIVATION IF THIS PASSES THE SENATE.

Path to citizenship??

These bastards had a path to citizenship, and they decided it was too beneath them to take it. As far as I'm concerned, they should never be allowed to be U.S. citizens. But apparently the flipping idiots that occupy the Senate don't think the opinions of actual Americans count a lick.

I think the best gesture we can make to demonstrate our displeasure with the Senate bill is to vote en masse for Democrats this fall, and call our GOP reps to tell them we did so to protest their votes against our positions. That way, it’s crystal clear to them why they lost.

What is totally insane is that nobody knows how many illegals are here. It could be as high as 40 million. They are adding 5 million a year for how many years? No one knows.

I'm going to research this whole thing more. While there's been very little posted discussion on the details on this bill, everyone seems to know enough about the specifics to be PO'd by the whole thing. I've heard other comments like Legal applicants will receive priority over illegals and other things. Any true light that FReepers can shed on this bill would help so that we can fulfill this sites purpose and boil this topic down to the absolute truth.

They would also be eligible for citizenship over time, How many times did the no borders crowd tell us that this wasn't an amnesty???

Sellout. Total sellout. Apparently the R's think that they're going to get more Hispanic votes than they're going to lose white votes.

Well, this white vote is going to find a REAL conservative party that protects America and American's like the Republicans keep wanting to claim they do.

No more republican votes for me just to keep hillary or kerry out. Dems are liars, cheats and thieves and Reps are spineless, weaselly, cowards. Neither care about whats best for America.

Screw em all and screw em high.

As I post this, the responses to this story are up to 87 and I have read them all. The only thing I can say is that, with several notable exceptions, your comments represent all that is scary and extreme about the so called "far right" in this country.
"I'm going fishing next November" and, "Don't ask me to vote Republican again" are just typical examples. Sure, and once the Democrats retake the House and Senate, paralyze the President in the war on terror, started their impeachment proceedings AND done nothing on the immigration front, I suppose you'll feel smug in the knowledge that boy, did we teach them a lesson.
Your knee jerk stupidity makes me sick.

This is nothing more than a rope a dope.

Talk tough until the elections and then sell the voters down the drain to the big donor's.

We didn't enforce the law after the 1980's fiasco and we want after the 2006 fiasco.

You who believe this is the right thing can hide in a closet and you'll eventually see this was not a good day for AMERICA, mark it on your calendar.
