Deal Would Put Millions on Path To Citizenship

WASHINGTON, April 6 — After days of painstaking negotiations, Senate leaders today hammered out a broad, bipartisan compromise that would put the vast majority of the nation's 11 million illegal immigrants on a path to citizenship.

The plan would also create a temporary worker program that would allow 325,000 foreigners to fill jobs in the United States each year. The Senate was expected to vote on the measure late today or early Friday and, if passed, it would mark the most sweeping immigration accord in two decades.

Under the agreement, illegal immigrants who have lived here for five years or more — about seven million people — would eventually be granted citizenship if they remained employed, paid fines and back taxes and learned English. Illegal immigrants who have lived here from two to five years — about three million people — would have to leave the country briefly and return as temporary workers. They would also be eligible for citizenship over time, but they would have to wait several years longer for it.

I think the best gesture we can make to demonstrate our displeasure with the Senate bill is to vote en masse for Democrats this fall, and call our GOP reps to tell them we did so to protest their votes against our positions. That way, it’s crystal clear to them why they lost.

In other words you want the President impeached.
Why don't you go back to Moveon.org, Chang

I just heard Byron Dorgan on Dobbs's show and he was suprisingly refreshing on this issue. Its all about cheap labor for the greedy pigs.

The only oneI will vote for is Spencer for Senate in NY. Otherwise the GOP can go to hell and will not get a minute from me poll watching or canvasing any more.

Greedy pigs, all of them.

They will still be there because they don't want to be legal citizens, they want cash to send home to Mexico, period.

All the stories written (and posted here) go to great lenghts to explain what happens to the 11 million current illegals, but few summarize any other aspects of the this so-called comprehensive bill. What else does it do? What enforcement provisions does it have? And are they real?

I know what the house bill is and does. Other than the disposition of the 11 million illegals, I know very little of what else it does. I'm curious.

I'm done with that brainwashing. The GOP has scared me enough not be scared of the RATS all that much more. The GOP is FAR more effective in the minority.

What is totally insane is that nobody knows how many illegals are here. It could be as high as 40 million. They are adding 5 million a year for how many years? No one knows.

I totally agree. I sometimes wish Kerry had won. Imagine the battles over the budget, no CFR, no drug bill.... Sigh!!!!

Once the "guests" realize that they wll be getting a pay cut by signing up for this bill, they will not sign up fo the plan and still try to work for cash. The greedy pigs will still demand cheaper and cheaper labor and will just encourage millions more to flood our country to undermine the new "guests". This really is the worst case scenario because it is amensty and also at the same time encourages much more illegal immigration.

Someone please remind me why we need 60 GOP Senators? Gay Marriage? Yeah that's it.

I'm going to research this whole thing more. While there's been very little posted discussion on the details on this bill, everyone seems to know enough about the specifics to be PO'd by the whole thing. I've heard other comments like Legal applicants will receive priority over illegals and other things. Any true light that FReepers can shed on this bill would help so that we can fulfill this sites purpose and boil this topic down to the absolute truth.

So long as they can stay and wrk the system, its amensty. Since most have no interest in being American citizens, this is just a sham.

kaktuskid: "In other words you want the President impeached.

I think impeachment would be just dandy. We went after Clinton on perjury because we couldn't get him on all his other illegal stuff - including ICBM technology to the Chinese. Having Bush impeached for Iraq is just another way of getting him for his open borders to Latin America policy.

Besides, a successful impeachment of Bush means we get ... Cheney, who might just run for re-election and win. What's not to like? I've had it with Bush - between the reckless spending, the political correctness with respect to Islam and now illegal immigration, it's time to send the GOP a message. Think about it - if Bush gets impeached, and the Democrats wind down the War on Terror, what's the worse that could happen? New York City disappears under a mushroom cloud? How is that a bad thing? Even Mike Moore pointed out that Muslim terrorists were attacking their supporters. (He completely missed the point that Muslims attacked the WTC because that was where the most Americans could be found in one place. If they had been completely successful, 40,000 would be dead, not 3,000). Point is that Muslims aren't going to attack red states; their populations are too spread out - you can't kill enough Americans that way.

My basic point is don't register as independents or as Democrats. Just vote for Democrats to express your displeasure. Republicans are starting to take conservative support for granted.

You won't have to wait that long. I see my own neck of the woods the last few years and how things have changed being flooded with illegals and third world people.

Yeah, right. That is cutting off your nose to spite your face. Putting the Dems back in power will be far more damaging to our country, especially in the area of national security. You can also write off any real SS reform.

Incumbency is a big part of being reelected. The Dems will use that advantage to keep the Reps out.

The DNC will be glad to demonstrate how they differ from the GOP. Remember, the RINOs are typically is safe districts. The only Republicans you'll hurt at the pols are the ones fighting your fight.

They would also be eligible for citizenship over time, How many times did the no borders crowd tell us that this wasn't an amnesty???

Sellout. Total sellout. Apparently the R's think that they're going to get more Hispanic votes than they're going to lose white votes.

Well, this white vote is going to find a REAL conservative party that protects America and American's like the Republicans keep wanting to claim they do.

No more republican votes for me just to keep hillary or kerry out. Dems are liars, cheats and thieves and Reps are spineless, weaselly, cowards. Neither care about whats best for America.

Screw em all and screw em high.

With their counterfeit water and electric bills, which are even now being manufactured.
