B>Former New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani has described seeing the horror of the 9/11 attacks on the city's twin towers.
He told the trial of Zacarias Moussaoui that he was unwilling to believe people were jumping from the buildings until he saw it with his own eyes.
The jury has to decide whether the self-confessed al-Qaeda member should be executed. Mr Giuliani is testifying for the prosecution.
The court will also hear from relatives of some of those killed in the attacks.
Mr Giuliani told the jury the image of two people jumping together from the World Trade Center, holding hands, stuck with him every day, the Associated Press news agency reported.
Describing the moment he saw people falling, he said: "I froze. I realised that in a couple of seconds, it switched my thinking and emotions. I said 'We're in uncharted territory'."
The human and emotional costs of the attacks, when hijacked planes were deliberately flown into New York's twin towers and the Pentagon, are taking centre stage at the trial.
On Monday, jurors said Moussaoui could face the death penalty. He is the only man to be charged in the US in connection with the 9/11 attacks.
The 37-year-old French citizen has pleaded guilty to six counts of conspiracy to attack the US.
During Mr Giuliani's testimony, the jury was played video clips of people jumping from the twin towers, the AFP news agency reported.
Close-up shots of the planes crashing into the buildings were also shown to the court.

Prosecutors are also said to be planning to read out the names of the 2,972 victims of the attacks, and show their pictures in court.
Before Mr Giuliani took the stand, prosecutor Robert Spencer told jurors they would hear from families of the victims.
He said that evidence "will be all you need in this case to sentence the defendant to death", AFP reported.
But defence lawyer Gerald Zerkin urged the jury to remain open to "the possibility of a sentence other than death", according to the Associated Press agency.
On Wednesday, Judge Leonie Brinkema ruled that a cockpit recording from the hijacked airliner that crashed in Pennsylvania could be played in the courtroom.
It is unclear whether the tape - which has so far only been played to victims' relatives - will be publicly released.
The judge has given relatives of the Flight 93 victims until Tuesday to request the audio be kept from the general public.
But she has said that if there were no objections, the recording will be released to the public the day after it is submitted as evidence.
Prosecutors want to use the recording to show the jury how passengers were treated by 9/11 hijackers.
The defence is expected to argue that Moussaoui suffers from mental illness and had a difficult childhood.
Them, and that lady who is seen holding her baby in the upper tower. Sometimes I will think of that baby and wonder who he or she was and about his or her mom.
If it makes you feel better, the guy who killed my dad admitted to having a great childhood and said his parents were always wonderful to him.
Giuliani's would make a great President.

After the first WTC tower was hit, all those trapped in the second one could have been evacuated. Where was the leadership?
The primary first responder protocol in such an emergency is to “isolate and deny entry.” This was also not observed and led to more loss of life. (I have professionally supervised emergency response, hazardous waste operations, evacuations and confined space rescue.)
It ain't about rocket science and glory hunting.
The response to the New York portion of that attack was disorganized and frantic.
A lot of people seem to conveniently forget the 9-11 attack was not just in New York... we also lost some of our best in Washington D.C. at the Pentagon! AND, what about the other aircraft that went down? Where was that headed?
All of this melodramatic media fodder makes me ill...
Giuliani testifying about the New York aftermath of that 9-11 attack has nothing to do with the case against Moussoui (however the hell you spell it) being involved with those terrorists in planning and executing those attacks!
We all know what happened afterward... I challenge any legal “expert” to explain how this was even relevant to that terrorist scum's complicity in the trial.
Immigration? Open borders? Terrorism? LEADERSHIP?

For those who were there, Guiliani supplied superb leadership on 9/11. In case you don't remember, he and his staff were dangerously blockaded in one of the famous (and much derided!) bunkers he had built for just such an occasion. How could he make instant evacuation decisions when at the time he was a near victim? If memory serves, he surfaced around noontime and then took strong charge.
Until he appeared on tv, I was convinced he was dead.

Mayor Giuliani sued all the way up to the Supreme Court to defend the city’s pre-911 sanctuary policy to thwart a 1996 federal law decreeing that cities could not prohibit their employees from cooperating with the INS.
"Oh yeah?," said Giuliani, "Just watch me." The INS, Rudy claimed, with what turned out to be grotesque irony, only aims to "terrorize people."
Very poor choice of words, Rudy.
Though he lost in court, Rudy remained defiant to the end.
On September 5, 2001, Rudy'a own boys---his handpicked charter-revision committee---ruled that New York City could still require that its employees keep immigration information confidential "to preserve trust between immigrants and government."
Six days later, on Sept 11, 2001, several foreigners who had overstayed their visas participated in the most devastating attack on New York City that our country had ever seen.
I don't think there was a baby. I have never seen a baby listed among any of the 9/11 casualties at the WTC, and there is no clear image of a baby in any of those photos.
It's also worth noting that Moussaoui was originally arrested by the FBI on an immigration warrant -- something that Giuliani specifically forbade New York City employees from enforcing in any manner.
If the NYPD had arrested Mohammed Atta on 9/10/01 for jumping a subway turnstile and they had learned that he had open warrants for his arrest for an immigration violation, they would have been explicitly forbidden from detaining him for the Federal authorities -- under a municipal regulation that Giuliani himself proudly supported IN DIRECT VIOLATION OF FEDERAL LAW.
I never thought I'd see the day when so many so-called "conservatives" would go out on a limb to support a liberal presidential candidate who ought to be serving time in a Federal prison right now.

I vividly remember seeing a photo many times on here that showed a number of people in the upper floors. It looked like a woman was holding a baby close to the window for air. I remember some Freepers commenting on how the mother looked like she was trying to get the baby as much air as possible. I may be mistaken. I wonder if anyone knows which picture I am talking about.
