Congress Nears Deal on Illegal Immigrants (breaking on cable networks)
AP/Yahoo News ^ | 4-6-06 | DAVID ESPO

WASHINGTON - In a last stab at compromise, Senate Republicans and Democrats reported progress Thursday toward agreement on legislation opening the way to legal status and eventual citizenship for many of the 11 million immigrants now in the U.S. illegally.

"There's been tremendous progress overnight," said Sen. Harry Reid (news, bio, voting record) of Nevada, the Democratic leader, while Majority Leader Bill Frist also expressed optimism that a long-sought compromise might be at hand.

There was no immediate reaction from President Bush, who has made immigration legislation a key priority.

The developments occurred after Frist unveiled a new bill late Wednesday night on the subject as the Senate headed into a test vote on the most sweeping immigration bill in two decades.

In general, the legislation would provide for enhanced border security, regulate the flow of future immigrants into the United States and settle the legal fate of the estimated 11 million men, women and children already in the country.

It was the fate of the illegal immigrant population that proved hardest to legislate, and it has left the Senate on the verge of gridlock for days.

(snip)

Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., as well as other key senators met before the vote to review terms of a proposed compromise.

In general, it would require illegal immigrants who have been in the United States between two years and five years to return to their home country briefly, then re-enter as temporary workers. They could then begin a process of seeking citizenship.

Illegal immigrants here longer than five years would not be required to return home; those in the country less than two years would be required to leave without assurances of returning, and take their place in line with others seeking entry papers.

They have ALL been here for 5 years.

If it were necessary, they could have utility bills proving they came over on the Mayflower.

Do you think federal burocrats are going to have the time or inclination to investigate whether 11 million documents are legit?

It will be an exercise in futility, but it's the fig leaf that Republican Senators need to pass this bill.

At any rate, this Hagel-Martinez bill can still be killed by the amendment process.

Furthermore, the House still has to join the Senate in conference to produce a compromise bill for both chambers.

Who cares? Does anyone think they'd even enforce that much? If they squealed on and on about how you can't "just" deport 11 or 12 million people, what the heck are they going to do now that the number they have to get rid of is "only" 2 million. And what about the "anchor" babies they had while here?

I'm sick and I'll repeat what I've said on many threads lamenting the fact that we do NOT have a government "of the people or for the people" any more: the time nears when some sort of New American revolution must happen. No, I don't mean with shooting or any other kind of violence. I simply mean something more in the way of massive demonstrations, strikes, tax boycotts and other ways of bringing the monster in Washington (and the ones in the state capitals) under control. I dream of a day when some leader could emerge from the swamp of politics who could galvanize real Americans to action in this way.

What really galls me to no end is W calling me ( and all of us for that matter ) racists. During one speech President Bush gave he cited prejudice as one prime reason for opposition to illegal immigration. Thats the type of bullpucky I would expect from the national media and every sniveling liberal I debate.

I was going to reply with a nicely phrased, about 2 paragraph explanation. But your reply sums it up in one sentence!

Exactly. And how much is this all going to cost the taxpayers to 'enforce' (sarcasm) this bit of invertebrate AMNESTY legislation..? With all the money spent on this they could deport the whole lot of em, in fact if they were told THEY WILL BE ARRESTED ON SIGHT, they would find their way out just like they found their way in.

Even IF, those who've broken the law for 5 years weren't being rewarded for doing that, how are we going to prove they've been here for more than 5 years?

How would you like to have a document creation/fabrication business specializing in five year old utility bills etc. when this is passed?

Or how will you force scofflaws to even participate in this program at all?

"I would rather have 41 conservatives in the senate that could prevent the liberals from passing their agenda than I would the present Republican controlled senate that aids the liberals in passing their agenda."

My Party has sold my country and all Americans out while in power. Unfortunately, you are probably spot on.

Amen! The GOP should be swiftly punished for this betrayal. The ONLY thing the GOP cares about is holding office, the only way to hold them accountable is to kick them out of office.

"As far as I'm concerned the entire capitol needs to be cleaned of these career cockroaches. With the exception of Tancredo, Sessions, and Sessenbrenner, most the rest can go to hell. They just gave us the middle finger and will continue to do so if we vote for them. I intend to find out how this is being voted on. Frist thinks he he slick but I'm not falling for this GOOD COP, BAD COP routine. I want to see them out next election. They just sold this country to the ILLEGALS."

AMEN!!!!!

How would you deport every single illegal? You can't and you know it. I wish folks would stop speaking in bumper sticker speak and come up with feasible solutions.

Quit being so stinking disingenuous.

At least 3 million have come in in the last year alone. How are you going to deport THEM under this stupid bill.

Fact is, it requires JUST AS MUCH POLITICAL WILL to deport 3 million as it does to deport 30 million.

And it is clear that Bush/McCain/Kennedy and Co. don't even want to deport ONE.

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse form the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years. Alexander Tyler

Start the countdown.

"They have no idea of the depth of outrage."

Boy have you got that right. I've voted in every election for the last 48 years, mostly Republican. I think what is going to be found out shortly is that we're all inflicted with the chump syndrome. They've forgotten about "passive resistance" so, I personally am going to give it back to them, get into the underground economy like the illegals, and look for every way to be uncooperative. I've had it.
