Congress Nears Deal on Illegal Immigrants (breaking on cable networks)
AP/Yahoo News ^ | 4-6-06 | DAVID ESPO

WASHINGTON - In a last stab at compromise, Senate Republicans and Democrats reported progress Thursday toward agreement on legislation opening the way to legal status and eventual citizenship for many of the 11 million immigrants now in the U.S. illegally.

"There's been tremendous progress overnight," said Sen. Harry Reid (news, bio, voting record) of Nevada, the Democratic leader, while Majority Leader Bill Frist also expressed optimism that a long-sought compromise might be at hand.

There was no immediate reaction from President Bush, who has made immigration legislation a key priority.

The developments occurred after Frist unveiled a new bill late Wednesday night on the subject as the Senate headed into a test vote on the most sweeping immigration bill in two decades.

In general, the legislation would provide for enhanced border security, regulate the flow of future immigrants into the United States and settle the legal fate of the estimated 11 million men, women and children already in the country.

It was the fate of the illegal immigrant population that proved hardest to legislate, and it has left the Senate on the verge of gridlock for days.

(snip)

Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., as well as other key senators met before the vote to review terms of a proposed compromise.

In general, it would require illegal immigrants who have been in the United States between two years and five years to return to their home country briefly, then re-enter as temporary workers. They could then begin a process of seeking citizenship.

Illegal immigrants here longer than five years would not be required to return home; those in the country less than two years would be required to leave without assurances of returning, and take their place in line with others seeking entry papers.

oh, okay....had it not been for you, I'd have never known that there is no person in all of the United States, much less FR, who would possibly be against immigration in any form.....I would have always thought the likelihood of anyone thinking that way would have been beyond the realm of possibility.

Oops. Now it's Dingy Harry complaining about people who are "holding up" the bill. The outrageous gall from the leader of six years of filibusters, beyond my ability to laugh at.

No, unfortunately.

They come here on their own accord.

At least that's what they would have us believe.

Ed *cough* Gillespie.

:-)

Seriously though, this nitwits regurgitate talking points they've cribbed from the National Association of Manufacturers or COC, and they somehow believe-in their own deluded imaginations-that it constitutes a reputable argument.

Frankly, I'm amazed that the FROBLs have the gall to even show their faces on this site right now.

It simply demonstrates how little shame they truly have.

I wish I was getting paid to post here - that would be a cool gig - how you sign up for that?

At least 99% here are against your position. I wouldn't do what you do UNLESS I was paid...handsomely. American's don't agree with your position, go back and tell the government we're tired of their spin. We'll see them at the voting booths.

Getting them on the books will only make them unemployable and moved over to the welfare doles.

I doubt that very much. I know illegals who are making as much as US citizens, and in are valued by their employers because they are hard workers.

In the meantime, more illegals will come over to take their place.

That's why we have to build the wall.

I think I just got the goods on Harry! I'm sitting on a powder keg that could blow Harry out of the water. Trouble is, I could get killed (yes, KILLED) If I bring it out.

Why don't we just make drugs legal and get all those people out into the open? And we can keep going down the list.

Right. Let's get all those who are guilty of driving over the speed limit and never got caught, or jay-walked, or drank alcohol and drove a car....and because they broke the law and got away with it...we can just keep going down the line and let all the mass murders out of jail etc etc.

This entire argument has become absurd and irrational.

I have no problem clearing the massive backlog for legal immigrants too : )

Not one illegal should be given squat until those who have been waiting in line have been immigrated. However, that's not what our Mexican President and Senators have in mind.

I just watched, following Jeff Sessions (a man who has earned my admiration), in sequence, Reid, Frist, McCain, and now Durbin, all arguing in their mealy-mouthed insider dealing terms for selling us out... do the people of the United States have any allies in the leadership of either party?

I doubt that very much. I know illegals who are making as much as US citizens, and in are valued by their employers because they are hard workers.

The whole appeal to hiring an illegal is that he is "off the books" and willing to work at below market wage and without benefits. They will also not report any sort of workplace violations as they are illegal and afraid of being deported.

Put the illegals "on the books" and the appeal of hiring goes away for the overwhelmingly vast majority of illegals.

Jeff Sessons and J.D. Hayworth are both highly ethical men. I have come to the conclusion Brownback and Dubya believe morality is a breakfast cereal.

I for one am sick to death over this "deal", this is nothing but grown men with no testosterone playing games with our lives.

We need to slam the borders shut NOW, cut off all welfare programs, fine any and all employers who hire ILLEGALS, DEPORT ILLEGALS, do racial profiling and DEPORT them IMMEDIATELY, I'm willing to pay higher prices for lettuce and other produce, just get these people out of MY country. Health care is costing us a fortune, hospitals are closing, OUR rights are being taken away because ILLEGALS are offended, the right to wear patriotic clothes, the right to fly an AMERICAN flag in the USA, I'm just sick to death of this nonsense and if something isn't done SOON we will lose this country, I fear for my kids, grandkids and the unborn waiting to come into this PC world. My grandparents are rolling over in their graves.

Thank you for listening.
