Joining what some are calling the nation's largest mobilization of immigrants ever, hundreds of thousands of people boisterously marched in downtown Los Angeles Saturday to protest federal legislation that would crack down on undocumented immigrants, penalize those who help them and build a security wall on the U.S. southern border. Spirited crowds representing labor, religious groups, civil-rights advocates and ordinary immigrants stretched over 26 blocks of downtown Los Angeles from Adams Blvd. along Spring Street and Broadway to City Hall, tooting kazoos, waving American flags and chanting "Si se puede!" (Yes we can!). The crowd, estimated by police at more than 500.000, represented one of the largest protest marches in Los Angeles history, surpassing Vietnam War demonstrations and the 70,000 who rallied downtown against Proposition 187, a 1994 state initiative that denied public benefits to undocumented migrants.
(snip)
Many of the marchers were immigrants themselves both legal and illegal -- from Mexico and Central America. Some had just crossed the border, while others had been here for decades. There were construction workers and business owners; families with young children and people in wheelchairs. Throughout the afternoon, protesters heard speakers demand a path toward legalization and denounce HR 4437, which would tighten border enforcement and crack down on employers who hire undocumented workers.
The rally was organized by numerous unions, religious organizations and immigrant rights groups and publicized through Spanish-language media, which encouraged participants to wear white to symbolize peace and bring American flags. The mostly peaceful march stretched over 26 blocks, shutting down streets and tying up traffic around downtown for hours. Police estimated the crowd at 500,000... Participants said the massive mobilization shows that immigrants' voices must be heard and that they are contributing to the country's economy.

"As for President Bush's claims about illegal immigrants doing the "jobs Americans won't do" and boosting the country'e "economic vitality," it seems the White House has still not read Robert Samuelson's definitive rejoinder.
It would be much more satisfying to gas it and incarcerate it.

CW2 Ping. Hard to see how this doesn't end badly when huge numbers of people are not citizens and prefer the flag of Mexico the that of the USA.
Amazing.
The first pic...the one of the Mexican flag covering up Old Glory, is offensive.
I would consider it to be 'fighting words' if I was a judge or on a jury.
When I started railing on this issue in the early to mid 1990s, I knew this day would come. Well, here we are. What the exact number was today, is not important. The fact is, California has millions of illegal immigrant residents. That alone is problematic enough, but when La Raza, Maldef and MechLa are done with them, we will have a serious problem on our hands. Leftists are thrilled to see this. They hate our nation enough to cheer this situation.
Today it's boisterous protesting. Still to come, and not that far off IMO, are more severe problems, fostered by the above mentioned groups and the vicious gangs that want to capitalize off of the unrest.
Folks like Bustamante, Villagaraosa and their fellow travelers will will also want to capitalize off that unrest.
The business concerns who have selfishly padded their bank accounts off the backs of these people will also seek to capitalize off this movement.
This is essentially the vile trifecta of concerns who will do everything in their power to break California away from the nation, if at all possible.
It starts with massive protests, such as the one today, and will progress to violence and referendums.
I'd just like to say thanks to the illegal alien appologists on this forum. Thanks a whole helll of a lot for helping to make it an iffy situation whether our nation will remain unified.
These problems are not confined to California any longer, thanks to the pricks who hire illegal immigrants. This unrest is coming to a neighborhood near you.
Perhaps it's time to take note of who are hiring these people and let them know how much "WE DO NOT!" appreciate it.
To say this is a bad situation is an understatement and all that comes to mind is France.
We laugh here about the inability of the French government to take decisive action to solve their problems, our government is unable or unwilling to do the very same thing. Perhaps the people in France were not all that happy to have all their middle-Eastern immigrants, either and their government ignored their wishes same as our's is ignoring us.
Villagaraosa actually showed up and spoke at this "rally" today. His election as Mayor of Los Angeles was the death knell for that once fine city.
Don't be so sure.
I suspect that estimates of 12 million illegals from Mexico and Central America are way too low. I'd estimate, from data from an INS friend of mine, that there are 24 million latino illegals.
Add them to another 24 million 'nationalist' Hispanics who were born in Mexico/Central America and moved here legal and/or green card, plus 10 million recent immigre's from Russia and Eastern Europe, plus another 5 million from India, Pakistan and various other countries, and I'd say the foreign born are getting pretty dam close to being able to call the shots in this country.
Dont forget the Dem libs policies in the 70s and 80s of automatic Motor Voter registration and "no ID" voter rules, and I'd say the situation is looking pretty sorry indeed, in the southwest border states and in the heavy northeast Dem controlled states. (plus Florida)
My cable TV company already has three, THREE full time Spanish channels and one part time Spanish channel.
Nickelodeon is pushing cartoons in which the characters speak half Spanish half English.
If all these illegals were law abiding citizens simply "looking for work" like many Republicans and Democrats claim, then I wouldn't mind so much.
But take it from a reporter who covers the police beat every night in an urban eastern Democratic state, and I can tell you that there are blocks and blocks, thousands and thousands of unattached young male Latinos who skipped the border and are now preying on people via Spanish gangs.
I've already stopped donating to the GOP, the RNC, and the Bush administration until they pass laws to build a wall, stop illegals, immediate deportation of all illegals caught, plus a host of other much needed laws that will keep America the Euro-centric melting pot which has made us a great nation these past 300 years.
If that makes me a racist, so what. I can live with it, and I EMPHASIZE the word LIVE.
Agree !

Clearly they counted this crowd using Calypso Louie Al- Jacksons million man march math......:o)
Waving that Mexican flag won them NO friend in their fight on this side of the border except anarchist and those bent on sedition and the destruction of our republic.
Black Hills is having a sale on 168gr BTHP.......
Round em up, ship em out.
Most of them were probably illegals themselves.
I hate to be negative but your not going to get 500,000 people to Crawford Texas.
By far the best place to do the rally would be somewhere in Southern California. In fact the same exact place would be great. But we probably couldn't get anywhere NEAR as many people.
Make that silent majority tax payers.
That is like a black South African preferring the apartheid-era South African flag, given how the Mexican government has treated her indigenous population over the years.
Locally it's the (CC) Chamber of Commerce acting as liaision between businesses expressing a desire to subvert the law and the citizen's desire (dare I say "right"?) to have our laws enforced.
Most recently, we have CP organizers as well, and I'd best leave that crew for another post.
You think that they don't vote? Do you live in dreamland? Don't you know that no ID is needed to register to vote in Cali, just any address where they can send an absentee ballot or ten? An empty house or motel lobby will do.
Ask B-1 Bob Dornan how he was "defeated" by Loretta Sanchez. Thousands of voters "living" in vacant lots, etc.
I don't know what time you watched CNN but I was watching around 5PM Central time. A young woman named Carolyn, was interviewing Villanaisa, Spelling? the mayor of LA. He stated that there was 500,000 in the streets and how he backed the illegals. Carolyn, who is a regular on CNN, said that she is the daughter of legal immigrants and told of all the legal work her parents had to go through. She then said she thought everybody should come here legally and asked if he didn't think so too. This threw him for a loop. He didn't know what to say. She ended the intervidews saying that Bush was going to Mexico to Meet with Fox this week. It is her hope that Bush and Fox will get together and figure out some plan to encourage the illegals back to Mexico. It was a heck of a good interview and she had a smile on her face the whole time.
What that does is gives even more power to people like Villagaraosa... this is how they have managed to have a society of haves and have-nots in Mexico and they are importing that here.
