Where Did All the Children Go?

SAN FRANCISCO -- Monica Burton did not want to leave San Francisco. Born and raised in the city and a train driver for the Muni transit system for the past 16 years, she loves her home town, volunteers in its women's jail and prays weekly at her church in the Hunter's Point section along the San Francisco Bay.

But as the main breadwinner for her family, which includes a 22-year-old daughter and two granddaughters, she faced some hard choices. Stay in San Francisco and abandon the dream of owning her own home because of skyrocketing housing prices, or leave. In 2004, Burton left with her grandchildren, buying a three-bedroom house in what she calls a "Leave It to Beaver" neighborhood in Sacramento, a 158-mile round-trip commute from her job in the city of her birth.

People like Burton have been leaving U.S. cities because of high-priced housing for some time. But according to researchers and urban leaders, the trend has accelerated in recent years and is threatening to reshape many of the nation's major cities. Between 2000 and 2004, all eight metropolitan regions from Seattle to San Diego lost middle-class families.

On the East Coast, a similar trend is underway, with middle-class families fleeing the New York region and Boston for the South. The District has been in the buffer zone, losing middle-class families with children to the Sun Belt but gaining some from the Northeast, said William Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution.

"There's a middle-class flight on both sides of the country," said Frey, who has analyzed county-level census data on both coasts. He has found that real estate costs more than schools are what is driving the migration.

Husbands/fathers would be a good idea.

Gee, when you fill an entire city with child predators, of course any respectable parent will get their children out of harms way. Kick out the gays and watch the families move back in.

I sold my home in Orange County a few years ago for almost a million dollars, took a job in Calgary Canada, bought a house a little better for about $400,000 (US), went laughing all the way to the bank.

Paid about $250,000 in the mid-80's... always felt like I paid too much

I even told the family that bought the house they were f--king insane.

If dying with a mortgage is your dream, enjoy suckers.

Well, my guess is that there were fathers somewhere in the equation. But they are likely long gone. This family may find somewhat cheaper housing in Sacramento, but the city is a pit. Time Magazine called it, "America's Most Diverse City." Maybe so, but what they failed to mention is that Sacramento's prosperous and growing suburbs; Roseville, Rocklin, Auburn, Granite Bay, Folsom and Placerville are not diverse at all. They are predominately white. The family in this picture is moving to Sacramento, a city with high crime rates and high housing costs. They could have done much better.

It's likely to hurt us more. Move a liberal family out of Minneapolis and into Oklahoma City, and you're just adding five more liberals to Oklahoma City. Minneapolis will just replace what it lost from country kids who want to move to the city.

Voting Republican is positively correlated with being married and having children. W won 25 of the 26 states with the highest fertility. Gore and Kerry got their highest margins in the states with the lowest fertility. The DemocRATS agenda has gotten more and more hostile to traditional families. As Republican portions of the country outbreed DemocRAT portions, power will shift to the regions with more population growth.
