Terri's Day challenges the nation to unify

Kevin Fobbs

March 13, 2006

Terri's Day — A Celebration of the Culture of Life honoring Terri Schiavo with a day of remembrance challenges each and every one of us to stop for a moment and ask ourselves a question, do we respect ourselves, our families, our lives?

And if we are faced with the question of the possible certainty of death, does anyone truly know, or even have the faintest clue about, our wishes? That is the greatest good, the greatest legacy that Terri Schiavo's death and an annual "Terri's Day" can bring to our lives and to the celebration of the Culture of Life.

On March 18th, we as a nation will begin to grieve again, to reach into our hearts and feel with our collective national spirit what the Schindler family felt last year at this time as each moment since Terri was disconnected from the feeding lifeline, the moments crept by like hours and hours like days.

All of us have felt in some way that pain — even if it were only in the privacy of our loved one's home, hospital room, hospice or perhaps talking with an attorney and doctor attempting to make sense out of some fleeting comments made in a conversation perhaps voiced ten, twelve or even two decades earlier — not necessarily an expression of her true feeling about an end-of-life decision but merely an incidental musing in a long-forgotten side conversation.

For at least one million Americans, and quite possibly a whole lot more, this is an opportunity to voice an opinion through a pledge supporting a resolution in each state called "Terri's Day — A Celebration of the Culture of Life." Each and every person who cares that your family, your spouse, your mother, your father, your sister or brother understands with clarity what you wish the end of life for you to be, with dignity and certainty should sign the online pledge at www.kevinfobbs.com and take the additional step to sign a Living Will — or as they call it at www.terrisfight.org, the Will to Live.

Some have asked why Americans should care about an annual Terri's Day. It is quite simple, we tend to keep turning the page on the Culture of Life because we feel it does not affect us. We tend to believe that seemingly universal belief that those who are handicapped, those who are not quite living a "perfect" life or by contemporary notion "ideal" then those lives are possibly disposable, marginal, not relevant, and part of the Culture of Death which embraces a "disposable society."

But life and our values for the Culture of Life are not disposable. Think about the young people today who would rather hurt themselves or even take their own lives rather than feel "imperfect" or the elderly person whose family is told by an insensitive health care professional while the stricken person struggles to cling to life, "she would be better off in another place," — just let her die, disconnect her from life, because her quality of life is not up to "contemporary standards. "

Why does celebrating the Culture of Life in Michigan become so essential for all of us in America? It is important for several reasons. Dr. Jack Kervorkian, also known as "Doctor Death" helped launch first in Michigan and then the nation the notion of the death culture. Secondly, and equally as important, at the May 12 event — just two days before Mother's Day — there will also be a "Mary's Moms" celebration of those women and mothers who have met challenges in standing up for some aspect of the Culture of Life.

This past weekend I sat at my cousin's funeral — or going home celebration, which more accurately describes it — thinking about the dearly departed and how she packed so much caring for others into her life even as she struggled with illness and advancing age. She was a wonderful woman who had lived through many, many challenges in her life, but in her 73 years she had met these challenges with dignity and had conveyed to her family when would be the right time to allow her to pass away.

Her daughter, who is a minister, spoke to the packed church about the times when, with all of her pain and then a stroke, the doctors had informed them that perhaps it was better to let her go. Yet that was three years ago that that occurred, and if the family had listened to the doctors and refused to see how she fought back and not only recovered but went back to volunteering at the church to feed and clothe the homeless. The medical professionals didn't care about an elderly lady who was on dialysis, but the family did and they knew better. Patricia lived three more years — years her extensive extended family considered "a gift from God."

So isn't part of the lesson of Terri's legacy and Terri's Day for families and loved ones to have a meaningful conversation with their family and to have the written document on hand as well that conveys the wishes clearly and concisely? You betcha.

As I sat in the church I thought of all of the families across the nation and the world who were sitting at their loved one's bedsides — or even standing outside of a hospital emergency room — overwhelmed with emotion, torn by what may be days of conflicting anguished decisions. I thought again of how out of death we may have the certainty of life. Terri's death reminded the nation that yes a state can and will starve you to death, and your family may be rendered helpless as you watch your loved one's precious life forces drain slowly away.

By signing the online pledge at www.kevinfobbs.com or going to www.terrisfight.org, you can learn about how to encourage your state legislature to establish March 31st as an official Terri's Day. Hold a Culture of Life Home Party or meet-and-greet to sign pledges, share ideas and support The Terri Schindler Schiavo Foundation as well as Culture of Life activities and events in your community or around the nation. Between now and March 31st you can make a dramatic difference for yourself, your family and for the nation. Stand up for the Culture of Life because one person, one life, one family can and does make a difference in America. Make the difference and be the difference today. America...The countdown for the Culture of Life has begun.

"I'm not going to even bother with downloading it, since they can override it anytime they please. I think the crucial thing that lets them get away with this is that they have legal immunity. Remove that, and they'd change overnight."

Sadly, history has proved that you are correct. They do what they please.

"That they do. They just want to kill as many people in as many ways possible. The difference here is that no one is forced to get an abortion. At least not yet."

I don't know why the left has this obsession with killing.

Also, while the woman is not forced (yet), the preborn baby has no choice.

So much for the abortion advocates being pro-choice...

Thanks. We will find out more soon.

The family will try to get as much info on what happened as they can. For one, some incision was made and got infected immediately with one of the hospital reenforced bacteria and they packed him with antibiotics. That along with the sedation must have started the cascade, chain reaction building after the sedation. Details are still fuzzy and the family is so devastated they can hardly focus. One thing they have concluded though is that the fatal procedures were unnecessary. They may try to get the details of the initial event and present it to another doctor hypothetically for a second opinion.

Powerful reminders of details of that fateful day from Father Pavone...

Recalling Terri's last moments Fr. Pavone said that as she lay dying, having not had even a sip of water in over two weeks, he put his hand on her forehead and when he moved his hand a little he touched a vase of flowers filled with water.

"Do you know that police officers were standing over that bed at every moment, every moment - armed police officers - making sure we didn't dip our hands in that water and put it on her tongue," he said vehemently, vividly recalling the scene. "Armed police officers enforcing the culture of death."

Snip

And he urged pro-life activists to continue the battle for life, realizing that the victory has already been won by Christ who has conquered death.

As to Terri, he said, "I assured her of your prayers . . . You were there in that room, you could cut the air with a knife so palpable were your prayers and your concern and your thoughts and the love of the whole pro-life movement . . . you were there and we told Terri you were there . . . and we prayed and we sat in silence . . ."

Fr. Pavone: Terri Shiavo's Room was "Thick" with Prayers and Thoughts of Supporters. "Terri Schiavo Would not Have Been Killed Unless Millions of Unborn Had Been Killed First"

Tales from the dark side...

Los Angeles, CA (LifeNews.com) -- Circuit Court Judge George Greer continues to make the rounds on the lecture circuit following his high-profile involvement in the Terri Schiavo case. The judge, who refused to back down from sentencing Terri to a painful 13-day starvation and dehydration death, will be a featured speaker at Loyola Law School Los Angeles in June.

However, this speaking engagement may be worse than the others as Judge Greer will instruct members of the mainstream media in how to report on significant legal stories like the battle over Terri's life.

Helen Valois article from Renew America...

As we repeat, "We will not be silent. We are your bad conscience. The White Rose will give you no rest."

Last July, a number of UWEC Resident Assistants (RAs) received a letter from the campus administration. One of them, Lance Steiger, realized that the letter's instruction to leave off holding Bible Studies — studies that were voluntarily attended, and organized on the RAs' own time — was discriminatory, and decided to do something about it. He contacted FIRE, a group dedicated to the advancement of authentic academic freedom, something in short supply on today's "pluralistic" college campuses.

The struggle between Steiger and the administration took nine months and a lawsuit it resolve. UWEC's response to FIRE's letter last Fall, spelling out what FIRE considered the Constitutional violations in the administration's position, was met with a strengthening of the administration's anti-Bible study policy. Additionally, the administration sought to hide behind the policy decisions of the UW System as a whole, stating its powerlessness to do anything about the situation unless the whole System made a policy decision first. Sounds familiar, doesn't it — like Harry Blackmun's assertion in Roe that the Court had no competence for deciding when life begins; like Jeb Bush's pathetic hand-wringing in the face of the starvation/dehydration of Terri Schindler-Schiavo. The right to trample upon other people's rights always seems to be coupled with the disavowal of any means of countering this trend.

Snip

So, as I personally happen to know very well, the present expression of the culture wars on campus has been brewing for a long time. One is reminded of the words of the White Rose resistance group in Germany, comprised of a group of students in Munich who lost their lives in speaking out against the National Socialist philosophy and regime. The Scholls and their confreres give us a glimpse of the state of education in a holocaust society in their last leaflet, where they write:...

Have you heard what happened at UW-Eau Claire?

More on Mrs. Vo's Fight, amplification on Lesforlife's post, from ProLifeBlogs...

.......................

The reports we've received concerning Mrs. Vo's case are troubling and we will be closely watching the actions of St. David's North Austin Medical Center. Hopefully, the hospital will continue to work with the family to meet the medical needs of Mrs. Vo rather than using futile care laws to purposefully end her life.

Here's a little background on Mrs. Vo:

Yolang T. Vo was born in Vietnam. She was a young mother when Saigon fell. Her husband was an officer in the South Vietnamese Navy. After the Communists took over, they put her husband in a re-education camp. Yolang worked her fingers to the bone to earn enough money to bribe guards so that her husband could escape the camp. After his escape, the couple fled from Vietnam on a rickety boat with other "boat people" in 1979. They came to America, where Yolang continued to work hard so that she could bring her young daughter out of Vietnam to America. She achieved that in 1981. She also helped her sisters and the rest of her family escape the Communists to come to America. Yolang's family reveres her.

Greer's "perspective" isn't "unique" among trial lawyers or in insane asylums. It isn't exactly unknown in the journalism biz either.

FLORIDA'S POPULARITY AS A TOURIST DESTINATION IS TANKING....They are blaming the hurricanes. B.S. Word is out that Florida kills people. Terri, Ted, Martin and many more.

What did I say on March 31, 2005? "Florida will be punished." I didn't set out a strategy but here we go.

The boycott of Florida started when Florida boycotted Terri.

Martin Anderson update: The Sheriff of Panama Bay is riled because they are getting phone calls to fire the Director of the Death Boot Camp. He made a smarmy comment about having more important work to do than to field phone calls from students!

When justice is denied, justice is demanded. I hope they keep calling and they shouldn't forget to call Jeb. These SHERIFF DEPUTIES AND THE NURSE SHOULD BE BOOKED in addition to being put on administrative leave.

Martin didn't get a second chance, why are these child smotherers not being held to account?????

Oops, I forgot, this is Florida, where it's okay to starve/dehydrate, rob, smother/beat innocent people. Oh, and TASER them to death too.

The bioethicking harvesters open the chest cavity and yank out the beating heart of the so called brain dead donor.

We know how the term brain dead has wide variations as to its definition.

All we need do is read up on Edgar Allan Poe. What is done now to VICTIMS used to be scary fiction in early Americana.

The media can't stop lying can they? ENDEARED Jeb???? I can't stand him. He's his mommy's little boy. After the family meeting, he abandoned Terri. Jeb rescued Terri in 2003 and abandoned her in 2005. TALK ABOUT A FLIP FLOPPER.

MEDIA LIE ABOUT CONSERVATIVES LUVIN' JEB...

"But his moves endeared him all the more to Christian conservatives."

(I wrote him off after all of his lies, false promises, game playing with the State Attorney and the M.E. after his move to abandon Terri).

Conservatievs should KNOW THAT JEB BUSH did a phony investigation of MICHAEL SCHIAVO that cleared Michael of all wrongdoing. Jeb and Michael Schiavo know something that we don't know and IMO, Mikey attacking the GOP is part of their deal to give Jeb some breathing room with conservatives.

Oscars for all.

Media statement? "Perhaps no crimes occurred in either case, but the public -- and the family of the dead teen -- have a right to know all the facts."

8mmmauser, the media is setting up the public for the big let down that Martin will not get justice. This is a Terri redeux. The media is working with the State of Florida in yet another coverup.

Glad tourism is down here because justice is nowhere to be found.
