King Kong and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe have taken away technical honours at the Academy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles.
The Peter Jackson-directed King Kong has won three of the four Academy Awards it was nominated for: visual effects, sound mixing and sound editing.
Andrew Adamson's The Chronicles of Narnia has won an Oscar for make-up, but lost out to King Kong for its other two nominations in visual effects and sound mixing.
Philip Syemour Hoffman has won the Best Actor award for his portrayal of the waspish gay author Truman Capote, in the film Capote,, while Best Actress has been given to Reese Witherspoon, for her role in the Johnny Cash biopic, Walk The Line.
George Clooney has picked up an Oscar for his Supporting Actor role in the oil industry thriller, Syriana, while Rachel Weisz has won the equivalent Best Supporting Actress Oscar for The Constant Gardener.
Other Oscars have gone to Memoirs of A Geisha for Costume Design, Six-Shooter for Short Film - Live Action, and The Moon and The Son for Short Film - Animated.

So "King Kong" won an Oscar?
Yes!
Some of those short films looked interesting. I was glad "March of the Penguins" won too. Hoffman was charming in his accpetance speech, Witherspoon was awful. Lee can't speak English, I don't know how he manages to do his job, but he seems like a sweet man. And Nicholson could not have conveyed more sarcasm had he been phoning it in from FR itself.
Ann Coulter, on Drudge radio tonight, was calling the snub of Brokeback and failure to award the suicide bombers' film an Oscar "a strategic retreat" by the left, and something normal Americans should find heartening.
Clooney's acceptance speech made me sick. He is so smug, and so snide. His comment, "I am proud to be out of touch", is just indicative of what a jerk he is. We should all remember that when ANY of his movies came out, and say "we are PROUD to be OUT of touch with him, and his silly movies. And he had to remind everyone that he had been named sexiest man of the year. He is absolutley in love with himself!!!
Excellent point...the nomination of the homicide bomber "film" was disgusting. Looks like the gay cowboy movie won three Oscars though (but not "Best Picture").
That "Grizzly Man" wasn't even nominated for Best Documentary is a cloud of shame on their heads.
Why o why does someone with such twisted views have to have the face of an angel??? Oh life sometimes isn't fair. I guess I'll always have Mel, tho :-)
Thanks for your comments....I didn't watch the awards ceremony because I was afraid that it would be a celebration of liberal hedonism.
Am glad that King Kong, Narnia, March of the Penguins won awards. Best Picture went to Crash and not to the gay cowboy movie.
Clooney for Solaris?
Clooney is such a disgrace to the country.
Politically correct tool.
"That "Grizzly Man" wasn't even nominated for Best Documentary is a cloud of shame on their heads."
Strongly agreed! Although it's good the penguins got it. Although it was very, extremely, too silly that they all had stuffed penguins with them. That was sad.
The Oscars are to Hollywood as May Day is to the Communists. I don't watch either of them.
I haven't seen "March of the Penguins." Is it any good? Might rent it if it is.
"Is it any good? "
Well, I haven't seen it either, but it's a pretty amazing story. How the penguins procreate, I think you'd like it. I have it on loan from my boss, who'll give me $10.00 if I don't like it, but I expect I will. My boss is just amazed at the humans who endured to film the darn thing.
Grizzly Man should really have been nominated, I guess for the Hollywood left 'enviros' trump 'euros' and that is sad as Grizzly Man is supposed to be really great. But the penguin movie at least has a happy ending.
Grizzly Man has a happy ending too. Bear eats idiot, lives happily ever after.
ACtually, the bear got shot after it was discovered what he had eaten them.
Ironically, because of his death, they killed a bear he said he would "die protecting."
Victory Gal, Mel is my favorite!!! We think alike. I was glad we saw him tonight, but it was way to quick. He is the BEST!!
Yeah, I think I'd like it. I'm into those sorts of things. I like penguins (who doesn't?).
I kind of interpret "Grizzly Man" as having an anti-environmentalist and ultimately right-wing message, which may explain why it wasn't nominated.
Agreed!
Easily the best documentary of the year. One of the best films of 2005, period.
