Just wondered what people were giving up for Lent.
If a Baptist Pastor said that all kids were obligated to wear the bracelets, I wouls have a problem.
As a Catholic parent, I can honestly say I would rather have my children be fervent Christian Baptists, than lukewarm Christian Catholics. (Not that I wouldn't be praying for their reversion, mind you).
I'm sure there are many Catholic folks on these boards who disagree with that sentiment, and I suppose your in laws do too, but really nothing breaks my heart more than a cradle Catholic who has completely fallen away from Christ. I would be greatly comforted by a child's faith in Our Lord.
As Catholics, we're only obligated to abstain from meat on Fridays, and fast on Good Friday and Ash Wednesday. That's not what this thread is about. This thread is about the popular Christian custom of choosing something we love and giving it up during Lent.
Maybe a self-proclaimed godless atheist could give up posting in religious threads? Attention whore.
I might just try your brussel sprouts recipe. If I die like I threatened my parents I would if I ate the darn things you will have hell to pay!
I've killed more people with that recipe....
BWAAAAHAHAAAAHAAAAA!!!
I think it might have been part of the early Church preparation of catechumens for baptism at the Easter Vigil.
I asked in post 266 if this was an obligation for Catholics. I haven't gotten a reply yet.

"I've killed more people with that recipe...."
LOL!!!
I gave up COKE for lent a couple of times, and it was hard, I couldn't believe it, some sort of self denying, I can't think of what it will be this year, oh no, not the computer!
sick, sick , sick, I will pray for you this Lent, the Church is the only thing left in my life worth fighting for, I was raised Catholic, went away from the church, came back, and so glad I did, that , no matter what church , is a testimony to God that He will not forget, you will see at your life review, I had a ndexp, I wouldn't go so far as to play right in the hands of the devil, rethink your statement
Sorry, didn't see that. The only Lenten obligations we have in addition to our normal obligations as Catholics are to abstain from meat on Fridays and Ash Wednesday and to Fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
you're so sick and demented
I'm going to cook at a soup kitchen.
I love your post! During Lent can you pray for me? and for my friend who has cancer?

From the EWTN website, it states that it is a "mandatory tradition" for those who wish to follow the Roman Catholic tradition.
They do clearly state that it is a man-created tradition, not a doctrinal mandate and subject to numerous exceptions (age, illness (e.g., diabetic), prison, bootcamp, etc).

Can that be translated as "It is a sin to not comply"?
