As an Anglican I've done it for years from our rector's point of view - don't just "give up" something temporarily, use the Lenten discipline to change your life in a way you can stay with.
I've gone meatless in previous years, and still eat less meat than I used to. I've gone without hard alcohol in previous years, and still drink less than I used to. This year, I'll be taking walks of a certain length on a daily basis, whatever the weather, whether I want to or not.
Depriving yourself of a treat like red wine - only to count the days you can start guzzling cabernet again - kind of misses the point, from his perspective, and I agree with him.

Predates MormonismYou are probably right since the early Mormons drank very, very well, thank you very much!

Here's the long answer...
History of Lent Taking up something can be just as meaningful. I challenged my 8th grate grade Catechism class to say at least one thing nice to their parents or brothers and sisters each day. And mean it!

I have a question. Where in scripture is Lent?
Thank you in advance.

I'm Catholic - but I'm not giving up anything.

I know, if I were really that devout a Catholic, I'd have to give up the Freep--since that would be one of the most difficult things to do for 40 days.
Since I know I can't, and won't even bother trying, I'll just stick with the old stand by-- fried foods. I live such an abstemious life as it is these days, french fries are my only vice at this point.
Sad, really, when you think about it.

I'll add Domino's pizza. Its not real food anyways. Admittedly, its not much of a sacrifice but since I've never 'technically' been Catholic its probably a bonus anyways. Just in case Heaven turns out to be just for Catholics, this small act of contrition might be my best chance of getting in.

Lunch, specifically eating between breakfast and dinner. We have free snacks at work, makes it harder. Also, going to the gym 3 days a week (not giving this up, taking it on, and listening to Lighthouse Ministries CDs during the ride to work and home).

Post 66 for the one-sentence.
Post 77 for the long.
There are numerous examples of fasting/cleansing in the Bible before big events.
Ester did so before petitioning the king.
Lost of other examples post-Babylonian captivity
Christ did so on at least one occasion, probably more
etc.
