Yes, he created a character who will literally live forever. Barney Fife really did make it rough for small town cops. I remember we used to yell, "Barney" at ours when he drove by

Barneys were actually OK. One time I got stopped by a Gomer who honest I swear said in a Gomer voice I'll let you go this time but "Fer shame fer shame fer shame" we both were laughing. My late father in law was a Buford T. Justice with a sadist leaning. {bad news to those he dealt with} Barney would have been a welcome.

My wife and I had just watched that movie via netflix the other night. His speech is a classic: "that must be a democrat running the microphone." :)

Also, loved the nervous weatherman routine on the Steve Allen show.

What a great picture. Why can't the entertainment industry make shows like that anymore?

One of my favorite movies as a kid, kinda creepy for me at the time, but I still loved it.

Very very saddened to hear this. Here in N.C. the Andy Griffith Show is really big. On our CBS affiliate has shown TAGS in between the 5pm and 6pm news broadcasts since I can remember and I'm 22 now. If I'm at home, I usually watching it even if I've already saw that particular episode 5 times. I believe its the best show ever. It truly is a great, funny, and wholesome show and Don Knotts had to be the funniest. I especially loved the years when Jim Nabors(Gomer Pyle) and Don were together. RIP Don. We're losing a comic genius but I'm sure heaven won't mind a few more laughs. Thanks for the reruns you leave behind. I'll be watching them as long as they keep running them.

(repost from the other DK thread):

Met him on a flight one time, when he was flying back from a reunion pic with his Mayberry friends.

Nice guy and magnanimous as all get out. I treasure his autograph (he made it out to my wife).

RIP, Don.

This is so sad. This guy was hysterically funny and had me ROTF as a child. He only had to give a certain look ,and he would crack me up. He will be dearly missed!

He was always showing up in our city doing Dinner Theatre, until just recently. I don't know if he ever retired at all.

Don't see anything wrong with that, as politics plays a major role in our lives. Most of us on FR were attracted to the site because of politics.

Ah the old Steve Allen Show, funniest program ever! I was pulled out of the audience as a 13 year old and used in a "Man on the Street" bit back in 1963. I loved that show.

Don Knotts was great...tho I love him as Barney Fife, my favorite memories of him were when he was on the Steve Allen Show, and he was one of three that were interviewed in the 'Man in the Street' interviews...one of those men was Tom Poston, who played a guy who could not remember his name...the second guy, I cannot remember the actors name, was a cheery short of guy, who went by the name of Gordon Hathaway..and Don Knotts played the third guy, a very little, nervous fellow...those interviews were hysterical...

RIP, Barney Fife...

When I saw it they literally had to stop the movie there was so much laughing. It went on for minutes before they started the movie again. Another favorite of mine is the cameo he had with, I think, Phil Silvers, in It's a Mad...World. Classic Don Knotts.

I guess Barney dealing with Earnest T and the Darlings {Dillards for us bluegrass fans} will be my favorite.

He was a good man and a great actor. I loved that show. Its a shame that shows that good aren't seen very often on TV now. The Andy Griffith show was a good'n.

"Atta boy Luther!"

When he's on the podium... shaking like a leaf and his speech blows away... I laugh so hard I almost cry. What a great comic... never better!
